HARTWICK---Claude Hickling, 79, of Hartwick, died
Saturday, Feb. 22, in the South Florida Baptist Hospital, Plant
City, Florida where he had been a patient eight days.
Mr. Hickling was born Feb. 2, 1896 in the Town of
New Lisbon, a son of Fred and Elenor (Fitch) Hickling.
He was twice married. His first marriage was to Vera
E. Courtright. She died Nov. 14, 1970. On April 12, 1972 he married
Elenor VanDeusen of Mount Vision.
Mr. and Mrs. Hickling had been spending the winter in
Zephyrhills, Florida.
In early life Mr. Hickling was a district school
teacher in Otsego County. Later he taught in and was principal of
several Central Schools of the state.
Since his retirement he had resided in Hartwick. He
had previously lived in Davenport, Sidney and on Long Island.
He had been a member of Cooperstown Masonic Lodge 138
for more than 40 years, and a member of the Lena Grange since the age
of fourteen. He was also a member of the N. Y. State Retired
Teacher's Association and the Hartwick Historical Society.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Leland G. Hickling,
Washington, D. C.; 3 grandchildren, 2 stepchildren; his mother,
Mrs. Andrew Jorgensen, Zephyrhills, Florida; and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sat., March 1 at
the Patterson Funeral Home, Hartwick, with the Rev. Charles Capper,
pastor of the First Baptist Church, Hartwick officiating.
Burial will be later in Schuyler Lake Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday evening.
