Katherine Garlock
NEWPORT — Miss Katherine M. Garlock, 89, of Newport, and formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the Little Falls Hospital.
Born in Garrattsville on March 23, 1911, Katherine was a daughter of the late William and Ivah Jackson Garlock.
She graduated from Morris High School and furthered her education at Morrisville College, from where she received her licensed practical nursing certification.
For 22 years, Katherine served as a nurse at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, from where she retired.
She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church as well as the Retired L.P.N. Association, both of Oneonta.
Miss Garlock was a 13-year resident of Garden View Manor in Otego before moving to Valley Health Services in Herkimer one year ago.
Survivors include two nephews and their wives, Elbert and Helen Garlock and Douglas and Marie Garlock, all of Newport; one sister-in-law, Lucille Garlock of Skaneateles; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by her two brothers, Carl and Elbert Garlock Sr.
Funeral services will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Saturday at 3 p.m., with the Rev. William H. Stubba, pastor of the Cold Brook United Methodist Church, officiating.
Spring interment will take place in the Newport Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be one hour before the funeral on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.

DOWNSVILLE---Perry L. Stanhouse, 85, died unexpectedly Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Howard Rose of Downsville, where he had been living for the past nine years.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Downsville Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lyman P. Taylor, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Brick School House Cemetery, Garrattsville.

Mr. Stanhouse was born March 15, 1880 in New Lisbon.

He married Jennie May Stafford on Jan. 1, 1907 in New Lisbon.

Mr. Stanhouse, a resident of Downsville since 1956, was a member of the Downsville Methodist Church.

Mr. Stanhouse was a retired employe of the Nationwide Insurance Company.

He is survived by three sons, James Stanhouse, Amsterdam; Rosslyn J. Stanhouse, Oneonta; Rea W. Stanhouse, Wayne, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Howard Rose, Downsville; Mrs. Clifford I. Gardner, Johnson City; one sister, Mrs. Frank Stafford, New Lisbon; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Sears men's wear manager, Ross Stanhouse dies at 61

Rosslyn “Ross” J. Stanhouse, 61, of 8 Richmond Avenue, retired manager of the Men's Department at the Oneonta Sears Roebuck and Company store and a past commander of both the Otsego County and Oneonta American Legion units, died Tuesday, October 10, at Fox Hospital, following an extended illness.

Private funeral services will be at the convenience of the family on Thursday, October 12, at the Boohout Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert E. Germond, pastor of the first United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the West Oneonta Cemetery.

Mr. Stanhouse was born September 21, 1911 at Garrattsville, a son of Perry L. and Jennie M. (Stafford) Stanhouse. He was graduated from Hartwick College with the Class of 1933. He married Mary Calhoun on February 9, 1945, at Troy.

He was a retail clerk and manager of the Men's Department at the Oneonta Sears Roebuck and company store for 23 years, retiring in June of 1972 because of ill health.

An Oneonta resident for 40 years, Mr. Stanshouse was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was an honorary member of the Administrative Board of the church.

A veteran of service with the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations from 1942 to 1945 during World War II, he was currently serving as secretary-treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Oneonta Veterans' Club Inc., and was a past commander of both the Otsego County American Legion and Oneonta Post 259, American Legion.

Surving are his wife; a son, Wayne R. Stanhouse, Ft. Myers, Fla.; two brothers, James R. Stanhouse, Amsterdam, and Rea W. Stanhouse, Wayne, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Howard E. (Marjorie) Rose, Downsville, and Mrs. Clifford (Gladys) Gardner, Johnson City; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at their convenience after 1 p.m., Wednesday.

The family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday and until noon Thursday.

Oneonta post 259 American Legion, will conduct Memorial services at 7 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.

Morris --- Margaret B. Perry passed away at her home on the Morris-Garrattsville highway Sunday evening. Funeral services will be held from the home Wednesday at 2, with burial at Morris. Friends are asked not to send flowers.

Mrs. Perry was born in the town of Burlington July 4, 1854, the daughter of George and Eleanor (Rea) Stanhouse, both of whom were born in England. She

was the widow of the late James H. Perry.

On their tombstone is listed one daughter, Elinor L. born Mar. 20, 1886 and died Dec.
21, 1906.

Woman Drowns In Creek

Near Edmeston Home

Edmeston---Falling from the end of a boat while feeding ducks, Mrs. Minnie Schworm, 47, wife of Harry J. Schworm, Edmeston merchant, was drowned in flood swollen Mill Creek early yesterday afternoon.

Body was removed to the Houk funeral home, where services will be held Saturday afternoon at 3. Rev. Winfield Kelly will officiate, and interment will be in the Edmeston Union cemetery.

Mrs. Schworm and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Robert Schworm, left their homes shortly after 2 to feed their ducks in the nearby stream. The ducks were in a section formerly used as a swimming hole and it depth had been increased by a heavy rain Wednesday night.

Neighbors were advised that two boats were tied to trees, and that Mrs. Schworm entered one of them to throw feed to the ducks. The swift current apparently rocked the boat, pitching her into the water. Failing in an effort to rescue her mother-in-law, Mrs. Robert Schworm shouted for help, but several minutes elapsed before her cries were heard by a neighbor, Mrs. William Card.

Mrs. Card is reported to have seen the woman in the water. She rushed to the bank of the stream and threw a board into the water, but the victim was unable to grasp it and soon disappeared from sight of the two women. Mrs. Card then called for aid, and several volunteers arrived within a few minutes to aid in searching for the body.

Almost two hours later the body was found about a half mile from the scene of the drowning. The woman's dress had caught on a limb on the opposite side of the stream and it requ8ired several minutes for volunteers to reach the body. Artificial respiration was applied by several men, and an inhaltor was used,m but after two hours of first aid work the victim was pronounced dead by Dr. E. C. Granger, Edmeston physician and county coroner.

Her son, Donald, was one of three men drowned when their canoe capsized in Big Moose Lake Nov. 12, 1940.

She was born Aug. 17, 1895, in New Berlin, a daughter of Frank and Minnie (Wheeler) Beatty, and her marriage to Mr. Schworm occurred Oct. 14, 1914. Mrs. Schworm attended the Methodist church, and was a past matron of the Edmeston OES.

Surviving are her husband and three sons, Robert, Earl, and Leon, all of Edmeston; and a sister, Mrs. Earl Becker of Newark Valley.

Resident Passes Away

Cooperstown, Jan. 21---Miss Rose Slack, 65, practically a life-time and highly respected resident of this village, died this morning at 3:25 o'clock in the Hollis home at 21 Walnut street, where she had been cared for since last May. Death resulted from a paralytic shock, which she suffered December 27. She had been an invalid for five years, following a fall on Main street in which she sustained a fractured hip.

The body was removed to the Griffith Funeral home on Pioneer street, where friends may call until the funeral Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock in the Church of Our Lady of the Lake, of which she was a devout communicant. The requiem high mass will be conducted by Rev. Fr. Vincent P. Archambault, pastor of the local parish, Rev. Fr. Francis X. King of this village, and Rev. Fr. William D. Noonan of Oneonta. Interment will be in the family plot in the old St. Mary's cemetery here.

Miss Slack was a native of Clarksville, and was born April 12, 1869, the daughter of the late James and Katherine (McManus) Slack. She came here in infancy. Until injured she was employed for several years in the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen C. Clark and previous to that as a waitress at the old Hoffman house and the present Fenimore hotel.

Surviving are a half-sister, Mrs. Kathryn Slack of Binghamton, and a half-brother, Frank Reilly, of Milford. There also remain several first cousins, including School Superintendent John B. McManus, Phillips McManus and the Misses Mary, Margaret and Cecelia McManus, all of this village.

The community was greatly shocked Sunday morning to learn of the sudden death about five o'clock that morning of Elmer Welch at his home on South Street. Although he had been in failing health the past two years, he had seemed to be gaining for some months past and had been about the village streets the Friday prior to his death. He was taken ill Saturday and was being cared for by Miss Mabel Simmons. Death came from a sudden heart attack early Sunday morning as mentioned.

Elmer Welch was born in the town of Columbus, March 10^th, 1862, the son of Charles Murray and Emily J. Simmons Welch. When a child he moved with his parents to Edmeston where he has since made his home, being one of the oldest business men of the community. He served the township as the first road superintendent under the Cass System and the first permanent roads in this village were built under his supervision. He also was in the lumber business and owned and managed a number of farms in this vicinity as well as village property. For a number of years he was a building contractor.

In 1886 he was united in marriage with Miss Ella Simmons who died in 1903. In 1907 he married Mrs. Sarah Lull Dennison who died about six years ago. He was a member of the Baptist Church of Edmeston and of the Farmers Lodge of Edmeston.

Surviving are four brothers, Hayes Welch of Edmeston, Bert, Leon and Blane Welch of Leonardsville and one sister, Mrs. Bert White of Edmeston, besides several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held privately from his late home on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. J. F. Weinhauer, former pastor of the Baptist Church officiating. Interment was made in Union Cemetery.

Mrs. F. C. Wolfendale died at the family home in Morris Thursday night, May 17, following a long period of declining health. She had been practically bedridden for over a year and although everything possible was done for her comfort, she suffered intensely from the effects of pernicious anemia and death came as a blessed relief.

Betty Augusta Uszkurat, yougest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Uszkurat, was born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, May 12, 1886. Her father died before her third birthday and shortly after that the family returned to Matz, Germany, where the deceased received her education and remained until 18 years of age when she rejoined her family in Pittston, Pennsylvania.

On September 5, 1913, Miss Uszkurat was united in marriage to Fred C. Wolfendale of Pittston. To them were born two sons, William B. Wolfendale, now in the fifth field artillery, stationed at Madison Barracks, and Clifford E. Wolfendale, who is a student in the eighth grade in Morris Central school.

Mr. and Mrs. Wolfendale moved to Oneonta about 15 years ago, where the former obtained employment in the D. & H. shops but in 1926 came to Morris, where they have since resided on Water street.

Mrs. Wofendale was a woman deeply devoted to her family and although handicapped for years by ill health, she was intensely fond of flowers and spent much of her time working among them as long as her health permitted. She was considered an authority on flower culture; her gardens were noted for the profusion and variety of their blossoms which she delighted to share with her friends.

The immediate surviving relatives are the husband and two sons previously mentioned, and her aged mother; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Mahar, and one brother Bernard Uszkurat, of Oneonta, to all of whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. R. J. VanDeusen, pastor of the Oneonta Lutheran church, were held at Sloan's funeral parlors on West Main street Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was in the family plot in the new part of Hillington cemetery.

New Lisbon, May 22---Mrs. Mary R. Jones, 88, widow of Michael C. Jones, died early this morning at the Home of Donald Bennington, near Garrattsville.

Mary H. Rodney was born in the town of Pittsfield April 11, 1846. Her parents were William and Isabel (McCoy) Rodney. Seventy-two years ago she married Mr. Jones. Nearly their entire married life was spent in the village of Garrattsville, where Mr. Jones died 15 years ago.

She was a member of the Presbyterian church. Her only near surviving relatives are a nephew, William H. Rodney of West Winfield, and a niece, Mrs. Lillian Rooney of South New Berlin.

The funeral will be held in the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Rev. Joseph Muglin, pastor of the church, will officiate.

The place of interment is unreadable.

Mrs. Julia H. Loudon, 69, longtime West Oneonta resident, died yesterday in Fox Hospital after an illness of some three weeks.

Prayer services will be held Wednesday morning in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 257 Main St., followed by a 10 a. m. Requiem Mass to be celebrated in St. Mary's Roman Catholic church.

Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.

Mrs. Loudon was born Nov. 14, 1883 in Clinton Corners, Duchess County, daughter of Thomas and Anna (McMahon) Hamilton. She was married to Eugene Loudon in Binghamton on Sept. 20, 1930 and had lived in West Oneonta since.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Poughkeepsie.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Ralph Loudon, now with the U. S. Naval Station in the Panama Canal Zone; a brother, John Hamilton, Cortland, and two grandchildren, Dennis and Susan Loudon, Eatonville, N. J.

GILBERSTVILLE --- John Miller, 74, a life long resident of the Town of Butternuts, died suddenly at his home in Gilbertsville.

Funeral services were held in the Moore Funeral Home, Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Arthur Clum, rector of Christ Episcopal Church officiating. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville. Bearers were John Frone, Ross Tobey, Ernest Emerson and Larry Erickson.

Mr. Miller was a son of Charles and Lucy (Davis) Miller. He was caretaker for many years of Brookside Cemetery.

His only survivors are a brother-in-law, William Woodland of Gilbertsville, and a cousin, Mrs. Mattie Church of South New Berlin.

Mr. Naylor was born in Laurens on Dec. 1, 1873, the son of George and Caroline (Eldred) Naylor. On Nov. 29, 1898, he married Mary Tillson at Morris. He had been a resident of Laurens until he moved here 15 years ago.

Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Miss Anna Naylor, Unadilla; a sister, Mrs. James Farrington, DeWitt, Iowa, and two nephews, Dr. Howard Naylor and John C. Naylor, both of Morris.

He was born in the Town of New Lisbon on Feb. 13, 1910, son of George and Nellie (Bemiss) Nearing. He had always lived on the property where he was born.

On July 17, 1943, he married Miss Pauline Trowbridge of Mount Vision. He was a member and trustee of the Bible Baptist Church here.

Surviving are his wife; Mother of Oneonta; a brother, Ray of Milford; two nieces, Mrs. Donald Reed of Cooperstown and Miss Lois Nearing of Washington, D. C.; and a nephew, George Nearing of Milford.

Henry W. Nielsen, 51, of RD 2, Otego, for 33 years an employee of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, died June 17 at Fox Hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks.

Mr. Nielsen was born Nov. 30 1904, at Sykeston, N. D., son of John and Sofie (Sorensen) Nielsen.

He married Edna D. Yager in Oneonta, Aug. 3, 1924.

He had lived in Oneonta for 31 years before moving to Otego seven months ago.

He was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Thomas Nielsen, 11 Tilton Ave., Donald Nielsen, Mount Vision, and Ralph Nielsen, Fort Eustis, Va.; His parents Mr. and Mrs. John Nilsen, St. Petersburg, Fla.; his grandmother, Mrs. Josephine Sorensen, Norway; two brothers, Oscar Nielsen, Clifton, N. Mr. Parker was born May 27, 1900, in the town of Pittsfield, the son of David and Mary (Pudney) Parker. He attended school in Pittsfield and Mount Upton. He married Thena Teed, Oct. 15, 1929.

He was a member of the Butternut Valley Rod and Gun Club, the Farm Bureau and the Production Farm Credit. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Garrattsville.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Roger E., Morris, Ronald E., New Lisbon and Dale, at home; a daughter, Barbara Prindle, Morris; a grandchild, David Earl Parker; one brother, Stanley Parker, Norwich; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Prindle, Ovid, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

NEW LISBON---Mrs. Mary Parker, 89. died Thursday morning, February 25, at Byams Nursing Home near Norwich.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Robert Fahy's Funeral Home in Norwich.

The Rev. Samuel Little of Endwell, former pastor of Morris Methodist church, of which she was a member, officiated.

Burial will be later in Union Cemetery at Edmeston.

Mary Louise Pudney was born in the Town of Pittsfield Feb. 23, 1870, daughter of Andrew and Emily (Matteson) Pudney. She was married to David Parker of New Lisbon Dec. 21, 1898. For several years they resided near Mount Upton on a large farm. Later they lived at New Lisbon where Mr. Parker died suddenly July 21, 1944.

After his death she moved to Morris where until failing health she went to Norwich to live.

Surviving are two sons, Earl Parker of New Lisbon and Stanley Parker,

Norwich; one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Prindle, of Ovid; eight grandchildren and several cousins.

Norwich --- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Louise Pudney Parker, 90, were conducted today at the Fahy Funeral Home.

Mrs. Parker who lived at 38 Park Street, died Thursday at the home of Marion Crawford, Town of Norwich.

Before coming to Norwich, Mrs. Parker had lived at Morris and on a farm near Mount Upton.

She is survived by two sons, Stanley D. Parker of Norwich and Earl L. Parker of New Lisbon; a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Prindle of Interlaken, several grandchildren and cousins.

Mrs. Sophia A. Perry, 82, died June 1 at her home in West Oneonta after an illness of about three months.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Sunday in West Oneonta Baptist Church on the 63^rd anniversary of her joining that church, in which she remained active until her recent illness.

The Rev. John Michael, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Mrs. Perry was born July 17, 1873, in the Town of Laurens, a daughter of William and Frances (Smith) Day. She was married June 17, 1891, to Arthur Perry, and the couple had been making plans for the celebration of their 65^th wedding anniversary this month.

She had lived for 18 years in her West Oneonta home, where friends may call at their convenience until noon Sunday, when her body will be moved to the church for the services.

She is survived by her husband; one sister, Mrs. Fred Tilley, who until her marriage had been brought up by Mr. and Mrs. Perry; a niece, Mrs. Roderick Dutcher, and a nephew, Lee Tilley, all of West Oneonta

MOUNT VISION---Mrs. Della Mary Rockwell, 90, died Wednesday at the home of her son, Lynn D. Rockwell, South Wellfleet, Mass.

Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Saturday in the First Baptist church, Mount Vision, with the Rev. Loren Hawver, West Edmeston, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charles S. Scott Jr., pastor of the Mount Vision church.. Burial will be in Lena Cemetery. Friends may call at the Tilley Funeral Home until service time.

Mrs. Rockwell was born Nov. 11, 1865 in New Lisbon, daughter of Edgar and Mary (Gillette) Fitch. She was a lifelong resident of this community. She was the oldest member of Lena Grange and for several years leader of the Lena Home Bureau.

Surviving besides her son in Massachusetts are another son, Percy B. Rockwell, Mount Vision; four grandchildren, Sheldon and Wilbur Rockwell, South Wellfleet; Richard Rockwell of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Robert Rockwell, Monroe, and nine great grandchildren.

According to Lena Cemetery Records online, her date of birth was 1866.  She was the wife of Sheldon Rockwell (1856-1917).  A son of theirs, Lester E. is buried
there.  He died on 4 Apr. 1891 at 8 mos and 19 days.

A Percy B. Rockwell 1898-1971 and his wife, Nonda M. 1899-1981 are also among the Rockwells buried at Lena.

DAVENPORT CENTER—Charles D. Smith, 56, proprietor of Square Deal Garage in Davenport Center, was fatally stricken with a heart attack while at work Monday morning. He died before arrival of Oneonta Emergency ambulance.

Funeral services will be held Wednesdayat 2 p. m. in Lewis Funeral Home in Oneonta, the Rev. William Heaps, pastor, Elm park Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Mr. Smith was born Oct. 29, 1903, in the Town of Pittsfield, the son of William H. and Lucy Denison Smith. He married Berniece Brainerd, Jan. 25, 1924, in Oneonta. She died april 25, 1950. On Aug. 6, 1953, he married Edith (Craig) Sargent.

Mr. Smith had owned and operated the Square Deal Garage for the past 34 years. He was a former resident of Oneonta and Morris. He was a member of the Davenport Center Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife; a sister, Mrs. Charles Hunt of Bloomville; eight grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.

NEW LISBON---Ralph S. Stafford, 44, died September 20 (1961) , at Fox Hospital after a 28 month illness.

Funeral services will be 10 a. m. Saturday at the Houk-Johnston Funeral Home, Edmeston.

The Rev. Wilfred Lyon, pastor of the Garrattsville Methodist church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Hillington cemetery, Morris.

He was born July 15, 1917, in Pittsfield, the son of Frank and Elsie (Stanhouse) Stafford.

He married Lois Ward, in Garrattsville, June 12, 1949.

He is a graduate of Morris Central School; he was a member of Local 1656 United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America; a member of the Tienuderrah Lodge, F&AM, of Morris; Hillington Chapter RAM; and the Garrattsville Methodist Church.

He was a veteran of World War Two, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He is survived by his wife; his mother; two brothers, Clarence, Ticonderoga; James, Norwich; one sister, Mrs. Clarence Belcher, Winter Park, Fla.; four uncles and two nieces.

Friends may call at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 and 7-9 Friday.

The Tienderrah Lodge will hold a service at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
