Oneonta Herald Death Notices 1853-1861

Death & Marriage Notices
Oneonta Herald
Starting March 16, 1853
Compiled and Contributed by
 Sandy Goodspeed

This evening, I've been going through a few years of these
Marriage and Death Notices. I've only included a few of the MANY
Death Notices here to emphasize how grateful I am to be living in the present.

No matter how imperfect our modern medicine is, we can be so very
thankful for the progress that has occurred since these years noted
below.

To see so many young people die of consumption, scarlatina, typhoid
fever, diptheria, and other diseases is heart breaking. I can't even fathom
losing 3 children to a disease like diptheria, one right after another, let
alone seeing the torture they would go through.

I'm not sure if putrid sore throat is also diptheria. It might be.

We can be so thankful that we live in the age that we do. Donna

Double funeral services for the late Mr. and Mrs. Seymour G. Camp of 19 Grand Street, victims of an automobile accident in Georgia, were held from the home Saturday afternoon. The residence was filled to capacity and a large group gathered outside.
Dr. E. J. Farley, pastor emeritus of the First Baptist church, officiated at the joint services, in which the Oneonta Elks lodge assisted with its ritual. The bodies were placed in the Plains cemetery vault for interment in the spring.
Bearers for both were Charles D. Townsend, A. J. Dewar, M. G. Keenan, Daniel Krothe, Daniel Franklin, Sr., and Harry Butts, all close friends of the prominent couple.
Hundreds of floral tributes attested to the esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Camp were hled. Among the groups sending flowers were Keenan's, Bob and Dan's restaurant, Oneonta Credit bureau, Oneonta lodge of Elks, Horton's of Albany and a group of eight tenants.
Included among those from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. George Wright and son of New York city and Daytona Beach, Fla., the former a sister of Mr. Camp; Mrs. Charles Stenson, a sister of Mr. Camp, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Morris of Gilbertsville; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Stenson of Binghamton, the former a nephew of Mr. Camp; Edgar Rowe and Mr. and Mrs. W. McClellan, Dr. John M. 1865-1931 Oneonta Obituary

McClellan, Dr. John M. 1865-1931 Oneonta Obituary

Dr. J. M. McClellan
Stricken Suddenly

Conscientious Practitioner
Here for 33 Years Victim
of Angina Pectoris

Dr. John M. McClellan, for the past 43 years a medical practitioner in Hartwick and Oneonta, the last 33 years in this city, died suddenly yesterday afternoon shortly after 2 o'clock at his farm located near the county tuberculosis sanatorium at Mt. Vision from angina pectoris.
Dr. McClellan left Oneonta about 1 o'clock for the farm and after his arrival there had started to mow the lawn. However, he cut but one strip through the grass before he had warning of his condition, for he stopped then and went to his car. It was not until about 4 o'clock that it was found that he was dead. Fred Walters noticing that he was apparently sleeping behind the wheel of his car on a trip past the farm, and upon his return he noticed that Dr. McClellan had not moved.
He called a friendly greeting, sensing that something might be wrong, and when the man failed to respond he went to the car. Mr. Walters immediately notified Dr. Frank C. Winsor at the sanatorium, who rushed to the scene, accompanied by nurses from the institution. Upon their arrival it was found that Dr. McClellan had apparently been dead for some time and Dr. Winsor pronounced angina pectoris the cause. From the position of his hands it is thought that in his last seconds he reached for a hypodermic needle in his pocket.
While Dr. McClellan's family had noticed that he seemed to be somewhat unsteady on a motor trip Sunday, it was thought that this was due to heavy traffic and in the absence of any comment from him little more consideration was given to his condition. A family gathering was held at the home Sunday and he seemed to be in usual health, as he did yesterday morning.
Funeral services will be held from the family home, 17 Elm street, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Dr. James C. Russell and Rev. C. Frederic Fraser, pastors of the first Presbyterian church. Burial will be made in the family plot of the cemetery at Laurens.
John M. McClellan was born January 29, 1865, at Albany, the son of William and Sarah (Riddell) McClellan. He attended the Albany public schools and later graduated from Albany Business college, the Albany College of Pharmacy and Albany Medical college, in the class of 1888 from the latter institution.
He had practiced his profession for the past 43 years, first at Hartwick for 11 years, during which he spent a period of about a year at Fort Wayne, Ind. He came to Oneonta in 1898 and this city had since been his home. Dr. McClellan was keenly devoted to his profession and rarely did he fail to respond to a call, regardless of his own physical condition or the obstacles of the journey, sometimes taking him many miles through winter snow. For a period of 11 years he was able to answer every call, whether in the city or the surrounding community.
As this record indicates, Dr. McClellan took more than usual interest in his patients and oftentimes he was at the bedside of one critically ill, practically 24 hours a day for eight or ten consecutive days. With such close application to his cases, he had been a successful practitioner and he had won innumerable friends among his patients and those who observed his application to his chosen work.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Maude (Field) McClellan, whom he married at Hartwick in 1894; three children, Harry J. McClellan, of 103 East street, manager of the Liggett store here, John McClellan, residing at home, and Miss Dorothy McClellan, a student at Albany Business college; one granddaughter, Betty Jane McClellan; and a brother, William McClellan, of Binghamton. To them he was particularly devoted and they will have the sincere sympathy of wide circles of friends in their loss. A son, Mathew, did as an infant a number of years ago and a daughter, Miss Marguerite McClellan, died at Nutley, N. J., in 1920.
Dr. McClellan was of a family which has shown itself particularly interested in ministering to human illness, conspicuous success having been attained by brothers and cousins in medicine and nursing service. However, none gave more liberally of their effort than did Dr. John M. McClellan, whose sacrifice of physical strength to his work brought his sudden passing.
Dr. McClellan and Frank H. Bresee, president of the Oneonta Department store, organized the Hartwick water company during the time they were both residents of that village and both remained directors of that venture, being close personal friends and having been engaged in other enterprises, among them the Central hotel company.

Russell and Rev. C. Frederic Fraser, pastors of the First Presbyterian church, officiated and interment was made in the family plot of the cemetery at Laurens.

In the eulogy, Dr. Russell spoke highly of the life of the deceased, of which a summary will be found below:
Practically the entire life of Dr. McClellan was spent in theis community and he was interested in everything that pertained to the municipality. He was a modest man, never thrusting himself before others, and a successful practitioner who gained the confidence as well as the sympathy of his large clientele.
Dr. McClellan was a workman, who needeth not be ashamed, verily he was his reward in the hearts of a large number of people. He will not soon be forgotten.

Automobile Crash Injures Two Men

Stuart Rockwell of Garrattsville Suffers Severe Cut
When Tossed Through Windshield

Two men were injured, one seriously, in an automobile collision at the intersection of Chestnut and spring streets yesterday afternoon at 3:45 o'clock.
Stuart Rockwell, 38 years old, of Garrattsville, is in the Parshall hospital suffering from a severe cut on the neck and numerous scratches on the face. Rev. J. C. Calhoun, 78 years old, of Garrattsville, received treatment for a badly cut lip.
The accident involved cars driven by Rev. Calhoun and Geroge H. Koehler, 64 years old, of 6 Huntington avenue. Mr. Koehler was driving east in Chestnut street, while Rev. Mr. Calhoun was turning into Chestnut street from Spring street.
After being sideswiped, the Calhoun machine leaped the sidewalk in front of 94 Chestnut street and crashed into a tree. The impact tossed Mr. Rockwell, who was riding in the front seat, through the shatter-proof glass windshield of the car. He received a severe cut on the neck and was rushed to the Parshall hospital by Mr. Koehler, where his injury was treated by Dr. Marshall Latcher. His condition last night was reported as being satisfactory.
Rev. Mr. Calhoun was thrown heavily against the steering wheel of his machine and received a badly cut lip. Stanley Moudy of Garrattsville who was riding in the back seat of the Calhoun car, braced himself when he saw the car heading for the tree and escaped injury.

PS: It appears this accident happened in Oneonta from the street names and Parshall Hospital was in Oneonta. It is now known as Fox Hospital. 1932 was penned in on the news clipping. This is part of the Mary Boice Gale Collection and from an old scrapbook.

Bissell, Mary Phillips 1833-1902

Bissell, Mary Phillips 1833-1902

A SUDDEN DEATH.

Mrs. Mary M., wife of Edwin A. Bissell, recently of Oneonta, who has been spending some time at the home of her son, Joseph W. Bissell, in the south-eastern part of Burlington, near the Patent post office, died Sunday afternoon, without a moment's warning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Telfer, who reside in the same neighborhood. Mrs. Bissell had called for a short visit and was at the time deemed to be in her usual health. Coroner Bishop of Garrattsville, was at once notified and on arriving at the house and making examination pronounced death due to heart disease. Mrs. Bissell was past 70 years of age, and besides the husband leaves two sons and one sister surviving her; One son, Fredrick Bissell, of Scranton, and Joseph W. above named, and the sister, Mrs. Zina Doolittle, of this place. She was the youngest sister of the late Barney H. and Frederick Philips of this town, children of Mr. and Mrs. John Philips, long since deceased. The funeral of Mrs. Bissell was held on Tuesday at the home of her son, J. W. Bissell, conducted by the Rev. H. H. Fisher; interment in the family plot at this place.

Another obituary with this one gives only slightly more information and different spellings of Phillips. Her son was Jasper W. Bissell, not Joseph as mentioned above.

Her Find a Grave Memorial denotes these facts. Her husband was Edwin Augustus Bissell 1833-1914. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=bissell&GSiman=1&GScid=2340048&GRid=34140661&
