Mount Vision Man Dies in Fox

Mount Vision—Henry F. Nearing of Mount Vision RD, died Sunday night at Fox Hospital, Oneonta, where he had been a patient for five days.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow at the Bible Baptist Church, with the Rev. G. Louis Jones, officiating. Burial will be in Brick Schoolhouse Cemetery, Garrattsville. Friends may call at the Patterson Funeral Home, Hartwick tonight.

He was born in the Town of New Lisbon on Feb. 13, 1910, son of George and Nellie (Bemiss) Nearing. He had always lived on the property where he was born.

On July 17, 1943, he married Miss Pauline Trowbridge of Mount Vision. He was a member and trustee of the Bible Baptist Church here.

Surviving are his wife; Mother of Oneonta; a brother, Ray of Milford; two nieces, Mrs. Donald Reed of Cooperstown and Miss Lois Nearing of Washington, D. C.; and a nephew, George Nearing of Milford.

Mrs. Della Rockwell

MOUNT VISION---Mrs. Della Mary Rockwell, 90, died Wednesday at the home of her son, Lynn D. Rockwell, South Wellfleet, Mass.

Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Saturday in the First Baptist church, Mount Vision, with the Rev. Loren Hawver, West Edmeston, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charles S. Scott Jr., pastor of the Mount Vision church.. Burial will be in Lena Cemetery. Friends may call at the Tilley Funeral Home until service time.

Mrs. Rockwell was born Nov. 11, 1865 in New Lisbon, daughter of Edgar and Mary (Gillette) Fitch. She was a lifelong resident of this community. She was the oldest member of Lena Grange and for several years leader of the Lena Home Bureau.

Surviving besides her son in Massachusetts are another son, Percy B. Rockwell, Mount Vision; four grandchildren, Sheldon and Wilbur Rockwell, South Wellfleet; Richard Rockwell of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Robert Rockwell, Monroe, and nine great grandchildren.

According to Lena Cemetery Records online, her date of birth was 1866.  She was the wife of Sheldon Rockwell (1856-1917).  A son of theirs, Lester E. is buried
there.  He died on 4 Apr. 1891 at 8 mos and 19 days.

A Percy B. Rockwell 1898-1971 and his wife, Nonda M. 1899-1981 are also among the Rockwells buried at Lena.

Mrs. Phoebe Estes, aged 87, of Mount Vision, died November 30 in Phoenix Mills.

She was born February 22, 1870, in Rolla, Mo., a daughter of Greenwood and Olive (Calhoun) Stenphenson. She was married to Lewis E. Estes of Cooperstown in 1888. He died October 13, 1941. She had resided in Mount Vision for 35 years.

She was a member of the Mount Vision Methodist Church and a charter member of Otego Valley Grange in Mount Vision.

Surviving are a foster daughter, Mrs. Harold Whittemore of Earlville, three nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. on Tuesday at the Patterson Funeral Home in Hartwick, with the Rev. John Wolfe, pastor of the Mount Vision Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Miss Lucy E. Tilley, aged 64, of Mount Vision, died Saturday morning in the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, where she had been a patient for three days.

She was born Decemeber 23, 1894, in New Lisbon, the daughter of George R. and Ida May (Reynolds) Tilley. She had taught school for more than 30 years in New Lisbon and Mount Vision.

She was a member of Lena Grange for nearly 50 years and for many years had served as a 4-H Club leader.

Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Angie Skellie of Cooperstown, RD 3; two brothers, Lynn and Glenn Tilley of Mount Vision; three nephews; five nieces and several cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. On Tuesday, November 24, from the Mount Vision Baptist Church, with the Rev. Philip Pitcher, pastor of the Rev. Philip Pitcher, pastor of the Milford Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Mount Vision Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary D. Hoose Dies

Thursday in Mt. Vision

Mt. Vision, March 24---Mary D. Hoose, widow of Stephen Hoose, died at her home at Mt. Vision Thursday, March 24. Mrs. Hoose was born, March 15, 1850, in the township of Hartwick, the daughter of Samuel and Samantha (Whitford) Harrison. Her entire life was spent in this community. She is survived by two sons, Arthur, living in Mt. Vision, and Courtney, living on the homestead, with whom she resided, and by whom she was faithfully cared for. There are also seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

At an early age she united with the Methodist church and lived an unassuming life of loving Christian service to her family and many friends and was beloved by all who knew her.

The funeral will be held at the home on Sunday at 2 p. m.

Mt. Vision, Oct. 12---Miss Elizabeth Briggs, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Briggs of New Lisbon, and Lavern L. Fuller, a progressive farmer of Mt. Vision, were quietly married at 8:30 o'clock Saturday evening, October 10, at the Baptist parsonage in Mt. Vision, by the Rev. Clyde J. Hurlbutt, the ring ceremony being used. The bride was gowned in dark brown satin crepe, with hat to match. Her attendant in dark brown crepe, with black hat.

The couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. David Skellie of Mt. Vision, life-long neighbors and friends of the bridal couple. They will reside at the Lake place, which Mr. Fuller recently acquired, and has been repairing.

Hosts of friends and neighbors wish the newlyweds much happiness and congratulate them as they embark on the matrimonial sea. They left Sunday morning to visit relatives at Westford and Middlefield.

A Variety Shower

On Wednesday evening friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Fuller to the number of 125 met at the home of Earl Briggs at Lena the life-long home of Mrs. Fuller for a variety shower.

Mrs. Carkee, in well chosen words in behalf of the gathering, presented to them many beautiful and useful gifts, including linen, glassware, pyrex, bridge lamps, blankets, end tables, and towels.

A delicious supper was served, at which time the bride and bridegroom were presented with a decorated cake, which they cut and which was served to all the guests.

The guests departed in the wee hours of the morning, wishing them many happy years of wedded life. Guests were present from Hartwick, Cooperstown, Mt. Vision, Laurens, Westford, Garrattsville, and South New Berlin.

MT. VISION---Mrs. Edna L. Gregory, 81, Mt. Vision RD, died Friday, April 18, in the Fox Hospital Nursing Home, where she had resided for the past three years.

She was born June 28, 1893, in New Lisbon, a daughter of Dorr M. and Belle (Coates) Gregory.

Before going to the nursing home, Mrs. Gregory had spent the latter years of her life on the same farm where she had been born and grown up in the Town of New Lisbon. Previously, she had been a resident of the Village of Morris.

She had been a member of the Morris United Methodist Church and of Jewell Chapter 306, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are a son, Philip D. Gregory, Mt. Vision RD; a brother, C. Lloyd Gregory, Mt. Vision RD; three grandchildren and several cousins.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, at the Patterson Funeral Home, Hartwick, with the Rev. Wilfred Lyon, pastor of the Morris United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Friends may call at the funeral home between 7 and 9 p.m., Monday, when the family well be in attendance.

Mrs. Estella Hinman Dies At Her Home in Mt. Vision

Mrs. Estelle Hewitt Hinman died at her home in Mt. Vision Saturday morning, March 19, of heart disease, from which she had suffered for the past four years. Mrs. Hinman was born in Moravia, Cayuga county, August 12, 1851.

She was married to Jason Hinman in 1868. Two children were born to them, Lela M. and Arthur, both of whom resided with her. Mrs. Hinman was a devoted mother and greatly loved her home. She will be sadly missed there and in the community, where she resided. Her funeral will be held from her late home Tuesday, March 22, at 2 o'clock. Rev. C. J. Hurlbutt of the Baptist church in Mt. Vision, officiating.

The family request that there be no flowers.

Funeral of Mrs. Hinman is Largely Attended

Mr. Vision, March 22---A large number of people, including many relatives and friends from distant points, attended the funeral of Mrs. Estella Hinman, held in her home yesterday afternoon. Among those from out of town were a niece, and husband, Mr. and Mrs. James Wakefield, of Locke; two nephews, Raymond Wheeler and Ward Austin of Ithaca, Mr. Wheeler having his wife and son with him. There were also a number of people present who were related to the deceased through her husband, who died some years ago. Among these were Mr. and Mrs. Eber Packer and Lyke Packer, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Packer and Mrs. Minnie Packer of Portlandville, Eber Hinmen of New Lisbon; George Mansfield and Mrs. Stephen Trimlet of Morris; Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Hinman of Middlefield; Mr. and Mrs. David Thorn and Francis Thorn of Milford; Kent Kilkenney and Mrs. Clifford Eldred of Oneonta. There were also many friends from West Oneonta, Laurens, New Lisbon and Mt. Vision.

C. J. Hurlbutt, pastor of the Baptist church in Mt. Vision, officiated, giving an appropriate message, fitting to the life of the deceased. His topic was: “Meditations on Life and Eath.” Among other things, he spoke kindly of the life of the deceased, and her relationships with her friends and other loved one.
Burial was made in the family plot in the Mt. Vision cemetery. Bearers were Harry Sargent, John Bishop, Bert Fields, Charles Miller, Harry Bunn and William Marks, all of Mt. Vision.

MOUNT VISION---Smith B. Gregory, 78, resident of the Town of New Lisbon, died Monday in Chase Memorial Hospital, New Berlin.

Funeral will be at 2 p. m. Thursday in Patterson Funeral Home, Hartwick. Burial will be in Hartwick Cemetery.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Wednesday night.

He was born in New Lisbon, son of Henry and Emogen (Babcock) Gregory. He was married to Anna C. Nellis who died in February, 1952. He had been a farmer most of his life.

Surviving are son, Clayton, of Utica.
