Morris, Nov. 18---A pretty November wedding was solemnized at the Baptist church here at 1 o'clock Saturday when Miss Claudine Pickens, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pickens of Morris township, and Robert M. Stafford, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Stafford of South Broad street, were united in marriage by Rev. H. E. Danielson, pastor of the church, in the presence of relatives and close friends.

The bride was gowned in dark blue velvet and carried a bouquet of white chrysanthemums. The matron of honor, Mrs. Richard Stafford, wore blue chiffon and carried a corsage bouquet of small white chrysanthemums. The best man was Richard Stafford, younger brother of the groom. Harry Pickens, the bride's brother, and Guy Chase of Morris acted as ushers.

A small reception followed the ceremony at the groom's residence where a wedding luncheon was served, after which the young couple left on a brief wedding trip.

Mr. and Mrs. Stafford will reside in Morris, where Mr. Stafford is publisher and proprietor of the Morris Chronicle. Both Mr. and Mrs. Stafford are popular young people and have many friends who will extend felicitations. Guests were present from Oneonta, Norwich, Gilbertsville, Laurens and Morris.

West Laurens---Miss Alma Louise Naylor, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Howard W. Naylor of Morris, became the bride of Francis Russell Elliott of Delmar, formerly of Morris, at Zion Episcopal church at Morris Tuesday at 4, the 27^th wedding anniversary of the bride's parents. Ceremony was performed by Rev. L. Curtis Denny, rector of the church.

Church was attractively decorated with ferns, carnations,, callas, and lighted candles. During the ceremony “Lohengrin,” by Wagner, and Mendelssohn's “Wedding March” were played on the church organ by Miss Mabel Grafton.

The bride, given away by her father, was attended by Miss Dorothy McMullen of Geneva, a college roommate at Cornell. Best man was Edward A. Elliott of Morris, brother of the groom. Ushers were Maurice Bridges and Charles Fay of Morris; Robert Porter of New Berlin; and E. Jackson Taylor of Downingtown, Pa.

Miss Naylor was attractively attired in white silk jersey with train, and a fingertip veil and coronet cap. She wore white pearls and carried a bouquet of callas. Her maid of honor was dressed in a coral silk jersey and carried a bouquet of talisman coral roses tied with a two-tone coral satin ribbon.

Nearly 200 guests attended the reception following the ceremony at the home of the bride's parents, where refreshments were served by Frank Eckmeir of Gilbertsville. The couple received many gifts, including silver, china, glassware, table and bed linen, money, and electrical appliances.

Mrs. Elliott is a graduate of Morris high. She attended Skidmore college for two years and graduated from Cornell university. For the past two years she has associated with the H. W. Naylor Co. Mr. Elliott, a graduate of Morris high and of Cazenovia seminary, is promotion salesman for the International Salt Co.

Morris --- Margaret B. Perry passed away at her home on the Morris-Garrattsville highway Sunday evening. Funeral services will be held from the home Wednesday at 2, with burial at Morris. Friends are asked not to send flowers.

Mrs. Perry was born in the town of Burlington July 4, 1854, the daughter of George and Eleanor (Rea) Stanhouse, both of whom were born in England. She

was the widow of the late James H. Perry.

On their tombstone is listed one daughter, Elinor L. born Mar. 20, 1886 and died Dec.
21, 1906.

Mrs. Merritt Lyman Bridges of Morris has announced the engagement of her daughter, Elsie Mary, to John Richard Ruhoff of Wausau, Wis.

Miss Bridges is a daughter of the late Merritt L. Bridges, well known central New York lawyer and former district attorney of Otsego county. She is a graduate of Wellesley college and is now engaged in research at the Johns Hopkins Medical school, Baltimore, Md.

Mr. Ruhoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin, and later received his Ph. D. degree from Johns Hopkins university. At present he is doing research at Harvard university.

Miss Bridges' picture, together with a mention of the engagement appeared on the society page of yesterday's edition of the New York Times.

Mrs. F. C. Wolfendale died at the family home in Morris Thursday night, May 17, following a long period of declining health. She had been practically bedridden for over a year and although everything possible was done for her comfort, she suffered intensely from the effects of pernicious anemia and death came as a blessed relief.

Betty Augusta Uszkurat, yougest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Uszkurat, was born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, May 12, 1886. Her father died before her third birthday and shortly after that the family returned to Matz, Germany, where the deceased received her education and remained until 18 years of age when she rejoined her family in Pittston, Pennsylvania.

On September 5, 1913, Miss Uszkurat was united in marriage to Fred C. Wolfendale of Pittston. To them were born two sons, William B. Wolfendale, now in the fifth field artillery, stationed at Madison Barracks, and Clifford E. Wolfendale, who is a student in the eighth grade in Morris Central school.

Mr. and Mrs. Wolfendale moved to Oneonta about 15 years ago, where the former obtained employment in the D. & H. shops but in 1926 came to Morris, where they have since resided on Water street.

Mrs. Wofendale was a woman deeply devoted to her family and although handicapped for years by ill health, she was intensely fond of flowers and spent much of her time working among them as long as her health permitted. She was considered an authority on flower culture; her gardens were noted for the profusion and variety of their blossoms which she delighted to share with her friends.

The immediate surviving relatives are the husband and two sons previously mentioned, and her aged mother; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Mahar, and one brother Bernard Uszkurat, of Oneonta, to all of whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. R. J. VanDeusen, pastor of the Oneonta Lutheran church, were held at Sloan's funeral parlors on West Main street Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was in the family plot in the new part of Hillington cemetery.

OBITUARY MORRIS-JOYCE RUTH FOOTE; Joyce Ruth Foote, 78 of Morris passed away  on January 2, 2009 at her home with her family at her side after a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Sayville, on May 7 1930 the daughter of Allen and Ruth (Esser) Stryker. She was married to Donald Foote on July 2, 1955 in Sayville. He passed away December 7, 1994. She attained her Bachelors Degree from Geneseo College and was a Librarian at Churchville-Chili Central School, Bugbee School, New Berlin Central School and most recently Morris Central School since 1975. She retired from Morris Central School several years ago. She had very recently published her second book on Morris called” Morris, New York; A Look Back.” She had served as town and village historian for many years and was a trustee of the Hillington Cemetery Board, and an officer on the Morris Village Library Board and had served as president for several years. She was also the Zion Episcopal Church historian for many years. Joyce is survived by her mother, Ruth M. Stryker of Norwich, her 2 daughters, Natalie Sheldon and husband Jeff of Hartwick, Donna Henderson and husband Alex of Morris, her grandchildren Kaina Hanna and husband Mike of Woodbury, NJ, Korri St. John of Morris, Kaite Henderson of Otego, Emily Foote-Canney of Morris, a great grandson Gavyn Hanna of Woodbury, NJ as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and many close and dear friends. Calling hours will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 4:00pm with the Rev. Robert E. Witt Jr. officiating. Areception will follow the service at the Zion Parish Hall.  Committal Services and burial will be held in Hillington Cemetery in the spring. April 1950, Morris---Erle A. Smith, Morris, died at 3:50 p. m. Sunday. Funeral will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at Zion Episcopal Church here. The Rev. Carl F. Truesdale will officiate. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery.

He was born in New Lisbon Nov. 17, 1881, son of William and Cora (Cook) Smith. He was married on Aug. 18, 1915, to Harriett Moore at Morris. He had lived here since 1936, when he came from New Lisbon.

He attended the New Lisbon school and was a graduate of Morris High School. He formerly was a farmer but after coming to Morris was a night watchman at the Linn Tractor plant and a school bus driver.

He was a member of Zion church, the West Laurens Grange and of the church vestry.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Smith, Hartford, Conn.; two sons, Francis of Sidney and Erle Jr. of Riverdale; and four grandchildren.

MORRIS --- Mrs. Ida Mae Smith, 67, died Monday at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday in the Morris Methodist Church. The Rev. Winifred Lyon, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Samuel Little of Endwell. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery.

She was born May 3, 1887, daughter of Charles and Sarah (Morse) Light. She was married to Albert Smith, Oct. 25, 1905.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Methodist Church and the OES.

Surviving are her husband; one son, Cecil of Morris; one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Addendum: Ida's tombstone gives her birth as 1878 instead of the 1887 noted

in her obituary. It would seem that the 1878 is the correct date. On the 1880

census, she is listed as 2 yrs. Old. On the 1900 census, she is in her parent's

household, age 22, listed as Ida Hull, and widowed.

In conclusion, the corrected information would make her 76 or 77 at the time of her death instead of 67.

MORRIS---Mrs. Della C. Southworth, 90, of Morris, died April 27 following an illness of several years.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sloan Funeral Home, Morris, with the Rev. Arthur Clum, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Gilbertsville, officiating in the absence of the rector of Zion Church, the Rev. Carl Truesdale. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Mrs. Southworth was born Nov. 9, 1867 in Maple Grove, Town of Morris, daughter of Erastus and Sarahette (Bennett) Jakes Carr. She was married to William R. Southworth, New Lisbon, Sept. 21, 1885. He died Feb. 12, 1930.

She was a resident of New Lisbon until 1948 when she went to make her home with her son, Claude Robert Southworth, Endicott. He died Sept. 1, 1955, and she came to live with her niece, Mrs. Mary Edwards, Oneonta. For the past year she had been cared for by a cousin, Mrs. Florence Mallory of Morris.

She was a member of Zion Episcopal Church.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Nellie Jester, New Lisbon; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Nettie Southworth, Johnson City; two nieces, Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Lena Culver, Cannonsburg, Pa.; two nephews, Harry Pegg, Maple Grove, and Ira Pegg, Morris, and several cousins.

Morris, July 10---After many weeks of suffering, Mrs. Bert Strait of Hargrave street, Morris, passed away at the Parshall hospital, Oneonta, where she had been a patient for over a week, Sunday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, due to a complication of diseases.
Lelah M. Fish, youngest of the four children of Moses and Lydia (Lamb) Fish, was born, August 9, 1875, in Otego, in which township she spent her girlhood.
On December 25, 1900, she was united in marriage to Bert Strait. Mr. and Mrs. Strait resided in Otego for a year, after which they lived in the town of Butternuts for three years and since that time, have always had a home in Morris, where Mr. Strait is now assisting in the Dr. F. I Reed Animal hospital.
The deceased was a woman, whose enthusiastic interest anddesire to be of service to others was very marked. Sincerely devoted to her home and to her church, and always active in the various branches of the latter as long as her health permitted, she leaves a host of friends, who will cherish her memory.
The immediate surviving relatives are the husband and a sister, Mrs. Chloe Sheldon of Otego, one nephew and one niece, to all of whom much sympathy is extended.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Dr. C. E. Vermilya of the Methodist church, will be held at Stillwell's Undertaking parlors in Hartwick Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the family plot in the new part of Hillington cemetery, Morris.

MORRIS---Mrs. Stella (Eldred) Wallace, 94, of Morris died Saturday, November 25 at Van Gorder Nursing Home in Otego.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 28, in Zion Episcopal Church, Morris, the Rev. William Mathers, rector, officiating. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

She was born May 17, 1867 in the town of Morris, daughter of John M. and Sarah (George) Eldred. She married Henry Wallace of Morris at Oneonta Oct. 5, 1898.

A graduate of the first Teacher Training Class of Morris Union School, and Oneonta Normal School, she taught in area schools for several years and later was secretary and treasurer of the Dimock Hollow Telephone Company for 18 years.

She was a member of Zion Episcopal church, Woman's Auxiliary, and Zion Parish Guild. A daughter of The American Revolution, Mrs. Wallace was also a past president and member of Jewel Chapter, Order of The Eastern Star, for more than 50 years. She was a member of The New York State Historical Society, the State and National Granges, and the Butternut Valley Garden Club.

Survivors are: Nieces, Miss Gertrude M. Eldred of Oneonta; a nephew, Clifford J. Eldred of Oneonta; three grand nephews, and seven great grandnieces and nephews.

Friends may call at Sloans Funeral Parlors, Morris, from 7 to 9 p.m. Today.

Revolution---Funeral Services to Be Held Today

Morris Dec. 15---Mrs. Henry M. Washbon, a life-long resident of the town, who had been in failing health for a number of years, died at the family home Thursday morning at 4:30 o'clock from a complication of diseases.

Sarah Urilla Cooke, youngest child of Samuel T. and Susan (Hicks) Cooke, was born in the town of Morris, near the Filer schoolhouse, October 12, 1853. When about 13 years old, the family moved to Elm Grove, where she resided until her marriage to Henry M. Washbon of Morris, which occurred February 19, 1885.

Mr. and Mrs. Washbon started housekeeping in the Washbon homestead, Mapleside, where the deceased spent her entire wedded life. She was a true homemaker and many are there who will cherish the memory of her hospitality, which extended to those in all walks of life.

Mrs. Washbon, for many years a member of Zion church, Morris, was active in its various organizations as long as her health permitted. She was also a member of Tianderah chapter, D. A. R. and was a real granddaughter of the American Revolution.

Besides the husband, her immediate surviving relatives are: One son, R. Washbon and one daughter, Gertrude E. Washbon, both of whom reside at home; one sister, Mrs. Ella Beardsley of Mt. Upton, and numerous nephews and nieces, to all of whom much sympathy is extended.

The funeral services, conducted by Rev. L. C. Denney, rector of Zion church, will be held at the home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the family plot in Hillington cemetery.

Funeral Friday Afternoon

Former District Attorney Merritt L. Bridges, one of the most widely known members of the Otsego county bar, died at his home at Morris Wednesday, following a decline of several months' duration. Funeral services will be held from Zion Episcopal church at Morris this Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The rector, Rev. E. E. Hutchinson, will officiate and interment will be made in the family plot in Hillington cemetery.

Mr. Bridges was a son of former Assemblyman Nathan H. Bridges and Fannie (Bingham) Bridges, and he was born at Morris August 25, 1868, and following his graduation from the High school of his native village in 1887, he entered the Albany Law school, by which institution he was graduated in 1899. In the following September he was admitted to the New York state bar and until the death of his father was associated with him in the practice of his profession, since he having practiced alone. He was district attorney of Otsego county 1900-1905 and has enjoyed a lucrative practice for years, having been entrusted with many estates in the surrogate's court.

Mr. Bridges married Miss Anna Mary Shanessy May 14, 1902, and she with three children, Maurice N., Elsie Mary, and Merritt Lyman Bridges, Jr. survive him. He leaves also one brother, Frank L. Bridges, a well known banker of Liberty, and one sister, Mrs. William Johnson of Brooklyn.

The deceased was a member of Tianderrah lodge, No. 605, F. & A. M. of Morris and of Norwich Commadery, No. 46, Knights Templar of Norwich, and an attendant of Zion Episcopal church. He was a member of the board of education of the Morris High school and for a number of years was its president. He also had been a member of the village board of trustees. He also was a director of the Otsego County Bar association from 1924-1927.

Mr. Bridges had a wide circle of friends, his genial and cordial nature attracting them and the fine attributes of his mind and heart holding them. Capable as an attorney, upright and honorable as a citizen and loyal in his friendships all who knew him will learn with regret of his death and deplore his passing.

State Trooper with the State Police. Myraette was 30 years of age. No children were listed.

On the 1920 census: She is listed as the 10 year old daughter of George and Lillian Wood in Morris, NY.  A 13 year old brother Clausen is also listed.

On the 1930 census: Myraette is listed as 20 and living with her parents George A. and Lillian M. Wood in Sidney, NY.   Her father's occupation is listed as electrician, and Myraette's is listed as bookkeeper at a bank.

Miss Gertrude Marie Walton, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Walton of Lower Dimmock Hollow, was united in marriage to John William Holdridge, son of Mrs. DeForest Holdridge of Burlington, in Zion Episcopal church, here, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. The ceremony was performed by the rector, Rev. L. Curtis Denney, in the presence of the immediate families and a few intimate friends. Miss M. Mabel Grafton, organist of Zion church, played the wedding march.

The bride was given in marriage by her father. She was attended by her sister, Miss Mary Walton. The best man was Donald Holdridge, brother of the groom.

Mrs. Holdridge is a member of the class of 1935, Morris Central school. Mr. Holdridge is a prosperous young farmer. They will reside on the Holdridge farm in Burlington, attended by the west wishes of their many friends.

Addendum:  On the 1940 census:  John was a farmer and head of the household at age 31, Gertrude was his wife, age 24, and their son John Jr., age 3 years.  Also, listed are his mother Rosa Holdridge, 60,  and 2 brothers, DeForest, 27 and Donald, age 21.  Rosa and the last two sons had lived on the same farm in 1935 and all were listed as farmers.  John had lived in Rocklyn, NY in 1935.

Frank Isbell

Morris, May 17---Frank H. Isbell of Morris, who had been in a critical condition at his home on Main street for a week as the result of cerebral hemorrhages. The first occurring the evening of May 9, died this morning

at 3 o'clock.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. L. Curtis Denney, will be held at Zion Episcopal church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be in the family plot on the flat in the old part of Hillington cemetery.

On the 1880 census Frank is listed as age 14, son of Seymour and Anice L. Isbell. Seymour was born in NY, but his parents were born in CT.

On the 1900 census his wife is listed as Flora, born Jan 1869. No note of children is listed. His occupation was listed as liveryman.

Sheffield Stone

Morris, Nov. 23---Sheffield F. Stone, 76, veteran hunter, and one of the most respected citizens of the town of Morris, died at the family home Thursday evening at 7:45 after many weeks of illness.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Dr. C. E. Vermilya, will be held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the family plot at the Brick schoolhouse cemetery.

Addendum: His date of death was Nov. 22, 1934. If there is an obituary with more information, I don't have one in the Mary Boice Gale Collection. I do have more information on him since he was my Grandfather William E. Stone's half brother.

Sheffield Fordyce Stone was born March 15, 1858 at Burlington, NY to Isaac Aylesworth and Phebe (Talbot) Stone, the oldest son of their 5 sons. He was a direct descendent of Arthur Aylsworth as well as Simon Stone. He married Arabelle R. Haynes in 1890. According to the 1900 census, they had one child, but none were living.

In 1892 they were living in Otego, NY, but moved to Morris in 1902 and lived there the rest of their lives. He was a blacksmith much of his life. On the 1925 and 1930 census, his occupation was listed as a farmer.

Morris, Aug. 20---Mrs. Charles E. Vermilya, beloved wife of Rev. Dr. Charles E. Vermilya of the Morris Methodist church, died at 8:40 Tuesday evening at the Chase Memorial hospital in New Berlin, where she had been a patient for 23 hours. Mrs. Vermilya had been confined to bed for five and one-half months as the result of severe burns. This long inactivity made it necessary to bring dormant muscles and joints into action again, but due to a heart affliction, she was unable to stand the strain. Her condition became critical Monday night and she was taken to the hospital where she gradually failed.

Goldie Fausey Vermilya, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Fousey, was born July 22, 1871, near Gibsonburg, Ohio. She was married to Dr. Vermilya June 21, 1899, in Delaware, Ohio, where each had been attending college. For three years they were in school together in Boston, Mass. In 1902, with her husband, she took up the actual responsibilities of a pastor's wife and homemaker in Fargo, N. D. Together they had been in the service of the Methodist church in that state, California, New York city and six years ago they came to reside in Morris.

She leaves one son and two daughters, Harold Fay Vermilya of Maplewood,

N. J., Mrs. E. H. Gray, Woodland, Cal., and Miss Mildred Glenn Vermilya, employed at the Homer Folks Memorial hospital, Oneonta; her husband; and a sister, Mrs. R H. Gregory of Hollywood, Cal.

The daughter in California cannot be present for the funeral which will take place in the Methodist church here Saturday at 2 o'clock. Dr. W. Gray Jones, superintendent of the Oneonta district of the Methodist church, will be in charge of the service.

As a pastor's wife, Mrs. Vermilya desired only to be one of the women of the church and play her part without any desire to hold offices which might prevent the development of local leadership. She loved her home and was devoted to all the interests of the home. She was a good mother, a good home builder, and always interested in the promotion of the welfare of others.

Schuyler L. Woodard Dies

at Residence in Morris

Morris, Nov. 15---Schuyler L. Woodard, a retired merchant of Morris, passed away in his sleep early Thursday morning at his residence on East Main street, after a long illness.

Schuyler Legrand Woodard, youngest son of John S. and Phoebe (Olin) Woodard, was born March 27, 1861, in the town of Pittsfield, where he grew to manhood.

May 10, 1885, he married Miss Minnie Williams of Pittsfield, who survives, and who tenderly cared for him during his long invalidism. To them were born three daughters, Mrs. Clyde Sloan of Morris, Mrs. Claude Mansfield, who died April 3, 1912, and Mrs. Douglas Barry of Albany.

Mr. Woodard owned and operated a large farm in Pittsfield for a number of years after his marriage. In 1903 the family moved to Morris village, where Mr. Woodard conducted a meat market on Main street, in what is now the Meinick building. Some time later he moved across the street and added a grocery department to his store. About eight years ago failing health caused him to dispose of his stock of goods and retire from active work.

He was a genial man and the contacts which he made with the public during his years of salesmanship won him many friends.

Immediate surviving relatives are the widow and two daughters; a grandson, Adolphus Sloan of Morris; two nephews, Lynn J. Woodard of New Berlin and John A. Woodard of Edmeston; also one niece, Mrs. Arthur Hawkins of West Burlington, to all of whom much sympathy is extended.

New Lisbon Becomes Bride

Morris, June 21---Miss Flossie M. Kane of New Lisbon and George A. Yerden of Middlefield were married at the Methodist parsonage by Rev. Dr. C. E. Vermilya Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The couple was unattended.

Immediately following the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Yerden left on a wedding trip to Niagara Falls. On their return they will reside with Mr. Yerden's mother on their farm in Cherry Valley, where the best wishes of their many friends will attend them.
