Erle Smith, Morris, Dies

April 1950, Morris---Erle A. Smith, Morris, died at 3:50 p. m. Sunday. Funeral will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at Zion Episcopal Church here. The Rev. Carl F. Truesdale will officiate. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery.

He was born in New Lisbon Nov. 17, 1881, son of William and Cora (Cook) Smith. He was married on Aug. 18, 1915, to Harriett Moore at Morris. He had lived here since 1936, when he came from New Lisbon.

He attended the New Lisbon school and was a graduate of Morris High School. He formerly was a farmer but after coming to Morris was a night watchman at the Linn Tractor plant and a school bus driver.

He was a member of Zion church, the West Laurens Grange and of the church vestry.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Smith, Hartford, Conn.; two sons, Francis of Sidney and Erle Jr. of Riverdale; and four grandchildren.

Harper Steele Is Dead at 70

Garrattsville---Harper Dewey Steele, 70, died at 5:45 p. m. Tuesday in his Garrattsville home, following an illness of the past two weeks.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at his home, with the Rev. Charles Dempsey, pastor of the Methodist Church here, conducting the rites. He will be assisted by the Rev. J. Ross McCloy, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church of Garrattsville.

The body will be placed in the vault of the Hillington Cemetery, Morris. Arrangements are by Patterson Funeral Home, Hartwick.

Mr. Steele was born Nov. 26, 1881, in Sidney Center, the son of Erastus E. and Jennie L. (Harrington) Steele. He had been a resident of this village for the past 60 years, and since 1901, was a member of the E. E. Steele and Son hardware firm of Garrattsville.

He was twice married. He first wed Miss Mary Anna Curtis of Morris on Aug. 10, 1904. She died on Aug. 9, 1927. On Dec. 19, 1931, he married Miss Myra Hall, Milford.

Surviving besides his wife is one son, Curtis, who is postmaster of this village; one sister, Mrs. Lillian Coy of Earlville; and two cousins, Mrs. David I. Casler of Millbrook and Mrs. Blanche Bailey of Scranton, Pa.

Oneonta Teacher Weds

Miss Myra M. Hall Bride of Harper D. Steele

of Garrattsville---Will Be at Home After Feb. 1.

Milford, Dec. 20---Miss Myra M. Hall, daughter of Mrs. Julia Hall of this village, and Harper D. Steele of Garrattsville were married Saturday morning at 8 o'clock at the home of the bride's mother on South Main street. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Willard H. Alger of Otego, a former pastor of the bride, in the presence of the immediate family.

The bride is a graduate of the Milford High school and Oneonta State Normal and for the past 10 years has been a teacher in the Chestnut Street school in Oneonta serving with great adaptability. She has been an active worker in the Methodist church and Sunday school here and has a host of friends who will extend congratulations and best wishes.

Mr. Steele is a graduate of Morris High school and is a member of the firm of E. E. Steele and Son, merchants at Garrattsville.

Following the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served and immediately after Mr. and Mrs. Steele departed for Poughkeepsie and New York. They will be at home at Garrattsville after February 1.
