Death of Attorney Merritt L. Bridges

Former District Attorney and
Widely Known Morris Attorney
Funeral Friday Afternoon

Former District Attorney Merritt L. Bridges, one of the most widely known members of the Otsego county bar, died at his home at Morris Wednesday, following a decline of several months' duration. Funeral services will be held from Zion Episcopal church at Morris this Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The rector, Rev. E. E. Hutchinson, will officiate and interment will be made in the family plot in Hillington cemetery.
Mr. Bridges was a son of former Assemblyman Nathan H. Bridges and Fannie (Bingham) Bridges, and he was born at Morris August 25, 1868, and following his graduation from the High school of his native village in 1887, he entered the Albany Law school, by which institution he was graduated in 1899. In the following September he was admitted to the New York state bar and until the death of his father was associated with him in the practice of his profession, since he having practiced alone. He was district attorney of Otsego county 1900-1905 and has enjoyed a lucrative practice for years, having been entrusted with many estates in the surrogate's court.
Mr. Bridges married Miss Anna Mary Shanessy May 14, 1902, and she with three children, Maurice N., Elsie Mary, and Merritt Lyman Bridges, Jr. survive him. He leaves also one brother, Frank L. Bridges, a well known banker of Liberty, and one sister, Mrs. William Johnson of Brooklyn.
The deceased was a member of Tianderrah lodge, No. 605, F. & A. M. of Morris and of Norwich Commadery, No. 46, Knights Templar of Norwich, and an attendant of Zion Episcopal church. He was a member of the board of education of the Morris High school and for a number of years was its president. He also had been a member of the village board of trustees. He also was a director of the Otsego County Bar association from 1924-1927.
Mr. Bridges had a wide circle of friends, his genial and cordial nature attracting them and the fine attributes of his mind and heart holding them. Capable as an attorney, upright and honorable as a citizen and loyal in his friendships all who knew him will learn with regret of his death and deplore his passing.
