New Road Project between Morris and Oneonta 1935

New Road Project between Morris and Oneonta 1935

State May Build New Morris Road

Highway Listed in Projects Planned
In Otsego County This Year---
7 County Jobs

Construction of 12.5 miles of highway between Oneonta and Morris is one of the projects planned this year in the Binghamton district of the state department of Public Works, which includes Otsego and other nearby counties.
The complete program for the Binghamton district this year calls for construction of 33.72 miles of highway and 17 bridges at an estimated cost of $1,907,000.
F. W. Donovan, district engineer, who made the announcement, state that the appropriations do not include any projects that will be undertaken if the $4,880,000 federal public works appropriation is voted by Congress.
Construction of a new highway between this city and Morris has been under discussion for several years. “There is every good reason to believe that the work will start this year because of the fact that it has been listed as number one project by the State department,” James H. Thomas, resident state engineer stated yesterday.
While the estimated cost of the proposed road was not revealed by Mr. Donovan, estimates made last year placed the figure between $300,000 to $400,000. Condemnation proceedings were instituted in 1934 to secure the right of way for construction of the new road, which will be a 20-foot concrete highway with five-foot shoulders on each side. Many of the curves in the present route will be eliminated under the new plan.
According to the program announced by Mr. Donovan, four bridges will be erected between Otego and Wilsey Corners and one between Schenevus and Westford. A new bridge between Route 7 and the village of Sidney is also planned
Plans for all of these projects are practically complete and rights of way have been obtained for most of the jobs, Mr. Donovan said “As a result it is expected that contracts for the projects can be awarded early this year.”
Seven county highway projects, estimated to cost $306,000, will be built this year. Work will be under the direction of Victor L. Hoke, county superintendent of Highways.
The projects and the estimated costs are as follows: Gilbertsville---Maple Grove, 4.2 miles, $76,5000; Willowville school--Myrick school, Briar Creek road, 6 miles, $35,000; Burlington--Schuyler Lake, 3.1 miles, $46,000; Fly Creek—Allen's lake, 3 miles, $45,000; Pittsfield—Garrattsville, 1.7 miles, $25,500; Decatur---Butlers Corners and Decatur—East Worcester, 3.2 miles, $48,000; Westford—Middlefield, 2 miles, $30,000.

We are home from PA

Four Generations of my husband's Davenport line.  Ralph is center front, his son, Lee is front right.  Lee's two children are center back and 2 children for each of them.  Spouses included, of course.

We are back from PA and had a nice trip.  The weather was perfect for our trip down and back and the autumn leaves were beautiful.  We generally take Rt. 81 south from Binghamton, Rt 476 around Scranton, then pick up 81 again all the way to Pine Grove.  There we take 501 over a mountain and on south into miles of farmland.  Many of the farms are Amish or Mennonite owned.  It is nice to see such beautiful farms and the land being used surrounding them.  It was 226.2 miles to our destination in Lititz.
It was nice to see family and we had a nice visit and trip, but I'm happy to be home again.  Have a great week.

Thank you to everyone that checks out this blog.  I hope you have found information that is helpful.
My husband and I are going to Lititz, PA the 18th through the 22nd to visit his son Lee and family.  With their 2 children and spouses plus 2 kids each, it will be a busy visit.  My husband is 86 and in poor health so this is an important visit for him.
The leaves should be enjoyable to see enroute south.  They are still beautiful here in central NY also.
I will get busy and add more posts when I return.  Have a great weekend.

["The Otsego Farmer & Republican" (Cooperstown, NY), Thurs., Nov. 12, 1959, Page Two]

So far, I can't find this couple on any census. They lived next to my family on East Street, in Edmeston, NY for awhile. Their children were Douglas, Ronald, Olive, Marvin, Larry, and Billie (a girl).
Olive and I were best friends and we wrote to each other a few years after they moved elsewhere. Delanson, NY was one of the last places they lived.
The kids and I spent many summer days playing and swimming in Wharton Creek and evenings playing hide and seek and softball.
Doug had an old navy raft that we hauled up the creek and floated downstream on many a time. Unfortunately, it washed away with high water.
Douglas would have been born around 1932 or so. The rest were born around 1938 or after.
Their father, William,  died in his 40s of a heart attack. My mother and I attended the funeral at Morris, NY.  He and Geraldine are buried at Hillington Cemetery in Morris, Otsego Co., NY.  Geraldine died in 2006.  I have a photo of their headstone when I locate it.

Try rechecking persons of interest to you for additions

You might want to recheck people that you are really interested in.  I add more to their posts if I find more of interest.  Also, I have been photographing gravestones as time allows and have quite an accumulation which is going to take me awhile to get them posted with obituaries as well as adding them to their Find A Grave memorials.
Yesterday, in passing Hillington Cemetery in Morris, NY, I circled up to the new part.  It had been raining, which isn't ideal for photographing stones, but since lichen on the stones was wet, I could scrub some down to at least visibility of names and numbers.  I will go another day when the photo op is better.  Every time I circle the driveways, I find more familiar names.  Why didn't they pop out at me before?
We had a hard killing frost last night, our first here in central NY for this fall.  It probably finished off most flowers with gravestones which I had been trying to catch for nicer photos.
Enjoy our week coming up.

One 'Wright' Name Leads to Many Family Members!

Kathryn Hill, an active Find A Grave volunteer, posted an obituary for Amy Florence (Hollister) Wright.  She also requested a photo of the gravestone.  Requests for local cemeteries are automaticly sent to me since I signed up for that.  I always check them out for leads as well as cemetery locations, especially cemeteries that I haven't heard of.
In the obituary, it mentioned that Amy had a son Frank Wright.  I know a Frank Wright, but the one I know locally wasn't of the right age.  However, knowing how names are passed down in families over and over, my curiosity was peeked.  The Frank Wright I know from our Senior Center is in his 90s and as spry as they come and sharp as a tack.  Lo, and behold, after putting in some information on Ancestry Search,  Amy turned out to be Frank's GRANDMOTHER!   Who would have thought it would be a 94 year old's grandmother?  I was thinking, MAYBE, his mother. The father of this Frank Wright was Gad Wright, another of her 5 sons.
I spent the rest of the afternoon and most of the evening on Ancestry.com plugging in name after name and generation after generation from that one bit of information.  With marriages, it led to the names of Gregory, Benjamin, Renwick, and Hume to list just a few of the prominent Butternut Valley names and many of them are buried at Butternut Valley Cemetery.  I pulled up the Butternut Valley Cemetery list and could match up more people that way as well.  Also, several of the people were included on my surname list with further information on their obituaries.
I wish you fun in researching your family genealogy.  With the internet and all the tools we have available to us, it can be a very rewarding adventure.

Find A Grave for Amy Florence Hollister Wright

Post for Ruth Wright Smith.  Ruth was a granddaughter of Amy Hollister Wright and also a child of Gad Wright.  She was sister to Frank Wright.  She is buried at Union Cemetery, Edmeston, Otsego Co. NY.
