UTICA — Vernon P. Bunn, 82, of Utica, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Bassett Healthcare Network in Cooperstown, with his family by his side.
He was born Dec. 4, 1929, in the town of New Lisbon, the son of Harry and Harriet (Hickling) Bunn. He married Barbara Hull on June 12, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in Morris.
Vernon was a 1947 graduate of Morris Central School. He served in the United States Army from 1950 to1952 in Korea. Vernon was a proud member of the American Legion, Post 229, in Utica.
He was employed as a technician with Western Union for 34 years, retiring in 1988. He was then employed with Contel and GTE, retiring again in 1995.
Vernon loved being with his family; playing Sudoku, crossword puzzles and his computer. How he cherished and delighted in his cat, Will, who he would walk on a leash everyday. Vernon was the consummate handyman and his woodworking skills have been gifted to many of those he helped.
His wife, Barbara; his daughter, Lori (Ron) Higgins of Richfield Springs; brother-in-law, Donald (Doris) Hull of Garrettsville; sisters-in-law, Dawn Hull of Burlington Flats, Shirley (Weldon) Breaux of Sulphur, La., Holly Bunn of Morris and Betty Poling of Palm Bay, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins survive Vernon.
His parents; his son, Thomas, in 1969; his brothers James, Francis and Richard; and his dear cat, Will, predeceased Vernon.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, Utica.
Calling hours will be from noon until 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, 30 South St., Edmeston.
Funeral services for Vernon will be private in the Edmeston Union Cemetery, Edmeston.
Contributions may be made in Vernon’s memory to Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio St., Utica, NY 13502.
