Obituary
Arthur
Reed
New Lisbon, Feb. 3—Arthur Reed, whose sudden death
was briefly noted in Tuesday's Star, was born in the town of
Burlington March 10, 1871, a son of Irvin and Marcia (Freel) Reed.
The most of his life was passed on the Reed homestead.
Mr. Reed died from heart disease sometime after
midnight Sunday near Bainbridge where he had worked for some time.
The body was removed to the home of his sister, Mrs. Susie Brigs,
who resides on the homestead near Brick School, where the funeral was
held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. C. E. Vermilya, pastor of
the Garrattsville Methodist church, of which the deceased had long
been a member, officiated. The remains were placed in the vault in
Butternut Valley cemetery for interment in the family plot there.
The bearers were Earl Chase, Clifford Ivenburg,
Clayton Miller and Elmer Rose.
Mr. Reed was a graduate of Oneonta Normal and taught
school at various places for several years. He married May Cornell
in 1900. She died in 1910. His only near surviving relatives are
the one sister, Mrs. Susie Briggs; one niece, Mrs. Arthur Boice,
and one nephew, Adrian Stone, both residing with their mother, Mrs.
Briggs.
PS: Arthur's middle name was Sylvester after his
grandfather Sylvester Reed. The line of ascent is Arthur, Irvin,
Sylvester, Shubael, and another Shubael Reed. The first 4 are all buried
at Butternut Valley Cemetery with several members of their families.
The latter Shubael is buried in Tolland, CT where his son Shubael
emigrated from.
Shubael married Mehetebel Hale, daughter of Pvt.
John Hale, a Revolutionary soldier, who along with his wife Mehetebel
are also buried at Butternut Valley Cemetery. The Hales had 10
children. Some came to this area with them. Two sons settled near
Norwich, NY.
Shubael built the Reed homestead which is located on the
left ¾ mile north of Butternut Valley Cemetery. Many generations of
Reeds lived there and the farm was split for sons.
I am a direct descendent of all the Reeds mentioned
through Arthur's sister (my maternal grandmother) Susan Aylesworth
(Reed) Stone, Briggs, Hisert and her daughter, Margueriete Willetta
(Stone) Boice. Susan, most commonly known as Susie was married 3
times.
