George W. Bedell

Morris, March 18---George W. Bedell, son of Hiram W. and Sarah (McIntyre) Bedell, died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Perry, of East Orange, N. J., with whom he had made his home for about six years, Thursday at 4 a. m., after a long period of declining health.

George Washington Bedell was born February 16, 1856, in Brooklyn, where he spent his early boyhood. When about 15 years of age, he came to the country and joined his brother in the town of Butternuts. October 20, 1880, he married Miss Mary Arries of Morris. To them was born one child, Mrs. Robert Perry of East Orange, N. J. Mr. and Mrs. Bedell operated several farms during their early married life. Later they moved into Morris village and Mr. Bedell became sexton of Zion Episcopal church, serving in that capacity faithfully for about 37 years.

After the death of Mrs. Bedell, June 14, 1929, he went to East Orange to reside.

Mr. Bedell was greatly esteemed by a wide circle of friends.

Immediate surviving relatives are the daughter; one brother, John B. Bedell of Rosendale; and two cousins, Miss Sarah Bedell and Miss Florence Bedell of Brooklyn, to all of whom sincere sympathy will be extended.

Funeral services were held in East Orange. Committal services, conducted by Rev. L. Curtis Denney, rector of Zion Episcopal church, of which the deceased had long been a member, were held at the family plot in Hillington cemetery, Morris, Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

Relatives and friends outside of Morris who attended these services were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Perry, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Scheff and Mrs. Lester Bedell of East Orange, N. J., Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Augur of Cooperstown; Mr. and Mr.s Charles Martindale of Oneonta; Mr. and Mrs. Alba Ainsworth of Gilbertsville.

Dies at Family Residence

Hartwick, May 8---Mrs. Ida T. Burch, 77, beloved wife of Orlo S. Burch, passed away Sunday afternoon at her home in Main street. Death was caused by complication of diseases.

Mrs. Burch was born February 23, 1855, in Laporte, Ind., the daughter of James and Lany (Pierce) Allison. She came to Hartwick when eight years of age and has since resided in this village. She was married to Orlo Burch January 30, 1878. Mr. and Mrs. Burch celebrated their golden wedding anniversary January 30 1928. She was a member of the Hartwick Methodist Episcopal church and acted as Sunday school superintendent for several years. She was a devoted Christian and a woman highly respected in this community.

Surviving besides her husband are one son, A. Monroe Burch, and one grandson, Orlo Burch, Hartwick; two cousins, Mrs. Fannie Baker, Syracuse, and Mrs. Hortense Maynard, Cooperstown. Her only daughter, Mrs. J. D. McAllister, passed away last November.

Funeral services will be held from the family home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. George A. Roberts, pastor of the Hartwick Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate. Interment will be in the family plot of the Hartwick cemetery.

Double Funeral Held for Camps

Hundreds Attend Last Rites for Prominent Couple

Victims of Georgia Auto Crash

Double funeral services for the late Mr. and Mrs. Seymour G. Camp of 19 Grand Street, victims of an automobile accident in Georgia, were held from the home Saturday afternoon. The residence was filled to capacity and a large group gathered outside.

Dr. E. J. Farley, pastor emeritus of the First Baptist church, officiated at the joint services, in which the Oneonta Elks lodge assisted with its ritual. The bodies were placed in the Plains cemetery vault for interment in the spring.

Bearers for both were Charles D. Townsend, A. J. Dewar, M. G. Keenan, Daniel Krothe, Daniel Franklin, Sr., and Harry Butts, all close friends of the prominent couple.

Hundreds of floral tributes attested to the esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Camp were hled. Among the groups sending flowers were Keenan's, Bob and Dan's restaurant, Oneonta Credit bureau, Oneonta lodge of Elks, Horton's of Albany and a group of eight tenants.

Included among those from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. George Wright and son of New York city and Daytona Beach, Fla., the former a sister of Mr. Camp; Mrs. Charles Stenson, a sister of Mr. Camp, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Morris of Gilbertsville; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Stenson of Binghamton, the former a nephew of Mr. Camp; Edgar Rowe and Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Cose, a niec of Mrs. Camp, and son of Sidney; Clyde Rifenbark of Schenectady, a nephew of Mrs. Camp; Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Angell of Mt. Upton, the latter a niece of Mrs. Camp; Loren Rifenbark of Sidney Center and Eric Rifenbark of Binghamton, brothers of Mrs. Camp.

Mrs. Camp was instantly killed a week ago today, and Mr. Camp followed her in death a few days later as the result of injuries which they received when their car was struck by another near Swainsboro, Ga.

Addendum: In checking the 1930 via Ancestry.com, Mrs. Camp's name was Edna E. (Rifenbark) and her mother was with them on the 1920 census. Mary R. Rifenbark was 78. Mr. Camp's birth date is listed as Nov. 1863 and I estimate hers as 1879 from the census ages. His occupation was listed as auto dealer.

Funeral Services Friday at Late Residence

Mrs. Altie Card, wife of Edwin Card of Lena, died at her home this Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock after about a week's illness of pneumonia. The funeral services will be held on Friday from her late home at 2 p.m., her pastor, Rev. C. J. Hurlbutt of the Mt. Vision Baptist church, officiating, and burial will be in the family plot in the Lena cemetery.

Mrs. Card, who was a daughter of Andrew Salisbury, was born in Milford township October 7, 1872, and was married 40 years ago to Edwin Card, who survives her. She leaves also seven children: Mrs. John Herrington of Sagaponack, this state, Raymond Card of Morris, Rena Card and Mrs. Viggo Larsen of Mt. Vision, Steward, Harry and Vivian Card, residing at home. She was one of a family of seven children of whom four, Andrew and Cleveland Salisbury of Mr. Vision, Mrs. Cora Morse of New Lisbon and Miss Anna Salisbury of Cooperstown, survive. She leaves also nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Card was a woman well known and much beloved in the community where her whole life was spent and she will be greatly missed by a multitude of friends. She had been a member of the Mt. Vision Baptist church for over 40 years, and was also a member of the Home Bureau of Lena.

Card Funeral Services Are Largely Attended

Mt. Vision, Nov. 18---Funeral services for Mrs. Edwin Card were held from the late home at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. C. J. Hurlbutt, her pastor, officiated. The bearers were Thurlow Sargent, Earl Briggs, Carleton Peet, and Andrew Harrington.

Two songs were given by Carl Cleveland, Irwin McIntyre and Clyde Hurlbutt, “I Am Thine O Lord,” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus,” favorites of the deceased. Relatives from out of town who attended the services came from Fly Creek, Cooperstown, Cedarville, Milford, Oneonta, New Lisbon, Hartwick, Index and Sidney. Among the many floral offerings were those from Mt. Vision Baptist church, Lena Home bureau, Morris Central school, Elmore Milling company, school district 11 and many others.

HANNAH MELISSA CHASE

Mrs. Hannah M. Chase died Sunday, December 9, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Porter after an illness of several months due to the infirmities of old age. Had Mrs. Chase lived until January 9 she would have celebrated her 99^th birthday anniversary and is believed to have been the oldest inhabitant of the town of Edmeston. Born in Pittsfield on January 9, 1836 the daughter of Stephen and Elsie Card her entire life was spent in the vicinity of Pittsfield and Garrattsville. In 1866 she was united in marriage with Adelbert Chase and has since resided in Edmeston. Mr. Chase died about five years ago. Up until the past few months Mrs. Chase took a great deal of comfort in reading and her mind was remarkably clear. She could recall incidents in her early life and delighted in telling tales of the civil war days and of the time she journeyed to Utica when a young girl and heard president Lincoln give a campaign speech. Her entire life was one of devotion to her family and home.

Surviving are five children; Mrs. Dora Porter, Mrs. Luella Truesdell and Fred Chase of Edmeston, Mrs. Jennie Babcock and Clayton D. Chase of Pittsfield; five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Porter with whom she had lived for the past six years and who tenderly cared for her in her declining health. Rev. L. A. Weed officiated and interment was made in Union Cemetery.

New Lisbon, Nov. 4---George Alexander Coffyn, a well known resident of this village, died between midnight Friday and 5 o'clock Saturday morning of heart trouble. He had been ill for some time. He retired Friday night feeling as usual, but when Mrs. Coffyn called him at 5 o'clock the next morning, she found him dead. Dr. B. F. Bishop of Garrattsville, coroner, gave a verdict of death by natural causes.

Born in Chester, Vt., July 21, 1873 a son of George M. and Adelle (Young) Coffyn, he came to New Lisbon about 40 years ago. He conducted a general store here for some time, then sold out and went to St. Louis, Mo. He returned about 26 years ago when he married the former Mrs. James Briggs Weatherly, who died in 1918. Later he married the former Alice Colburn Garrett.

A man of sterling character and quiet nature, he leaves a host of friends who will sincerely mourn his passing.

Surviving are his wife, one son, Edward, 14; a step-daughter, Mrs. Harold Row of New Berlin; one brother, Edward Coffyn of Dover, Pa.; two aunts, Mrs. Jessie Hathaway of Albany, and Miss Mary Young of New Lisbon; one uncle, Charles Young of New Lisbon; and several cousins, including Lynn Hathaway of Oneonta.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon from the home. Rev. L. Curtis Denny, pastor of the Morris Episcopal church, will officiate, and interment will be in Hillington cemetery, Morris.

Robert W. Dyckman Dies

After Illness of Over Year

Morris, Dec. 22---Robert W. Dyckman, proprietor of the Morris inn for the past eight years, died at his home on Main street early Thursday morning from the effects of a shock, which he suffered last week. He had been an invalid for over a year.

Robert Willard Dyckman, one of the nine children of Law and Janette (Nichols) Dyckman, was born December 19, 1886, in North Harpersfield, where he spent his boyhood.

As a young man he became interested in the management of restaurants and during his life successfully conducted several in Ballston Spa, Oneonta and Sidney, before purchasing the Morris inn.

Mr. Dyckman was united in marriage March 27, 1921, with Miss Hazel Mead of Gilbertsville, who survives him and who has faithfully cared for him during his long illness. To them was born one son, Robert, Jr., now 12 years of age.

The deceased was a member of the Jefferson Masonic lodge, of Leila chapter,

O. E. S., in Jefferson, and also of the Elks lodge in Norwich. He was a genial man and with a markedly keen sense of humor. He made many friends, among whom he will be greatly missed.

Immediate surviving relatives are the widow and son; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Bassage of Rochester and Mrs. Elnora Simmons of Oneonta; also several nephews and nieces, to whom much sympathy will be extended

The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Dr. C. E. Vermilya of the Methodist church, were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was in the new part of Hillington cemetery.

Addendum:  I estimate his year of death as 1935 since his son was born in 1923 and he was 12 when his father died.

FRANKLIN---Cook E. Edgerton, 89, of Delhi Stage, a retired dairy farmer, died Saturday, July 13, 1968, at Fox Hospital following an extended illness.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Gene Black, pastor of the Franklin United Methodist church, officiating.

Burial was in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Mr. Edgerton was born January 23, 1879, at Pittsfield, a son of George and Mary (Whiteman) Edgerton. He was twice married. He married Josie Gager at East Sidney on January 2, 1901. She died in 1938. On June 24, 1944, he married Lillian Hagerborne of Cobleskill who died in 1958.

He was a dairy farmer both at East Sidney and Cobleskill.

Mr. Edgerton was a former member of the Unadilla IOOF lodge.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Marjorie) O'Brien of Delhi Stage; a sister, Mrs. Agnes Foote of Oneonta; a brother, Paul Edgerton of Morris; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Emma Edgerton of Gilbertsville; a stepson, Carlton Chase, Syracuse; and several step-grandchildren.

Emma Peet Risley Edmonds, 76, passed away Monday, January 27, at her home in Hartwick, following a shock. Mrs. Edmonds was born in Edmeston February 22, 1858, the daughter of Levi Peet and Caroline Walters. Her early life was spent in this community. She was twice married, her first husband being Herbert Risley and the second husband Loren Edmonds. She was a member of the Christian Church at Hartwick for over forty years and much of her life was spent in Hartwick and New Lisbon.

Surviving are three sons, William Risley, George Risley and Edward Risley, all of Hartwick; three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Harris of Waterville, Mrs. Olive Burdick of Edmeston and Mrs. Maude Parkin of New York, one brother, Ray Peet of Edmeston; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral was held from the Maxwell Funeral Home and later at the Christian Church. The Rev. R. C. Updyke officiated assisted by the Rev. L. N. Davis, pastor of the Methodist church. The body was placed in the Hartwick Cemetery for burial in the spring.

Frank H. Gates

Frank H. Gates, aged 67, one of the best known citizens of this village died on Thursday, January 25, after an illness of several years duration. Mr. Gates underwent an operation at Faxton Hospital last June and seemed to improve in health for a few months but acute Brights Disease developed and was the immediate cause of death.

Mr. Gates began his business career in 1890 conducting a furniture store in the store now occupied by Burlison's Harware store. He later purchased the Rutherford House and for years has conducted up to date Funeral Parlors and a general undertaking business. His son-in-law, Mr. Wallace Corts recently succeeded him in the business since Mr. Gates' health failed.

He was twice married, his first wife being Lena Colegrove who died in 1915. In 1920 he married Margaret Elliott of Oneonta.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret, a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Corts, and a grandson, Wallace Corts Jr.

A life long Republican in politics Mr. Gates held several local offices serving as Postmaster and chairman of the Republican committee for several years. He was a Past Master of Farmer's Lodge No. 553, a Patron of Edmeston chapter No. 391 and Past Assistant Grand Lecturer of the Otsego-Schoharie District of the

O. E. S.

He took an active interest in civic affairs giving of his time and money for all projects for the betterment of this village, being especially active in securing subscriptions for the building of the Masonic Temple.

He was a member of the Baptist Church and sang in the choir for 30 years. In Mr. Gates' death Edmeston has lost an upright and influential citizen and his memory will linger long in the hearts of his many friends.

His funeral was largely attended on Sunday, January 28 from his late residence. The services were conducted by Rev. Harrison Hadley of New Berlin. The bearers were: Mr. John Doran, Mr. W. A. Gould, Mr. Thomas Walker, Mr. Arthur Vrooman, Mr. Russell Doig, Mr. Earle Brooks.

Addendum: According to the 1930 census, he was born 1866.  Adding 67 to that makes the year of death 1933.  I don't think that is the year if his funeral was on a Sunday, Jan. 28th.  So, the dates are up for correction, but are in the ballpark. 

The Rutherford House mentioned was later the Wallace Corts home.  It is the beautiful large home just up the hill on the right on East Street.  The firehouse is now
across the street from it.

My Afternoon Hunting for Photos at Hillington Cemetery

Yesterday, armed with my surname list and the request list from Find A Grave for Hillington Cemetery in Morris, I went looking for familiar names.   Hillington is a large well laid out, well cared for cemetery with over 5000 residents.

I was looking for a cool, cloudy day, but not rainy so the tombstones wouldn't be wet.  I found a day close to that with sun coming and going.  Heat and I aren't friends, so that was my reason for a cool day.  Cloudy, because that makes for better photos when the sun isn't shining on the stones, or trying to photograph a side with the sun shining directly at you instead of from behind.  That happened a couple times.

First, I circled the lower level closest to Morris and found lots of names I recalled while typing up posts for this blog.  There are two hilltop parts at Hillington.  The older hilltop part is closest to town.  Shortly after I drove up there, a caretaker approached me asking what names I was looking for.  I laughingly told him he might be sorry he had asked as I hauled out my list.  He started telling me just where this and that one were.  Then he said if I would follow him, he would take me to them.  They all were on the newer hill.

I was amazed that he could remember more names on my list than I could just after glancing at it. Many requests were from Kathryn Hill who has been creating alot of Find A Grave Memorials at Hillington and other cemeteries in the Butternut Valley.  She also puts obituaries on and links families which is the nicest way of creating memorials.  I was astonished to discover that she lives in Illinois.  One of the names on my request list was for Mildred Chase.  That name started picking at my memory bank while I followed the truck.  Ha!  Bet she was the school secretary at New Berlin Central School for years.  I remember her very genial personality.

There was the gravesite of her husband, Philip and Mildred, as well as their daughter born in 1933 next to them.  In between the stones is a ?concrete castle that her father built for her when she was 3 years old when she was ill and bored.  The family had asked if they could put it on the gravesite and had been granted permission.  That is the little castle at the top of this page.

I'm more familiar with the new hill part since my paternal grandparents, an aunt and uncle, and two cousins are buried there and I often circle there in passing by the cemetery. 

In visiting further with the caretaker, I found out that he is 72 and weed whacks the graves.  That is quite a strenuous job for his age.  He has worked there 30 years after retiring from the Coast Guard.  He enjoys helping people and especially helping them to accept the mystery and heartbreak of death.  It also turned out that he used to spend time with an uncle in New Berlin and both his uncle and my father worked at I. L. Richer in New Berlin.  It is really a small world.

New Lisbon, March 22---George Adrian Gregory died at his home at Garrattsville at 2 o'clock this morning. Death was due to a complication of diseases from which he had suffered for some time. He was 76. The funeral, which will be private, will be held at his late home Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Rev. C. E. Vermilyea, D. D., will officiate. Interment will be in Butternut Valley cemetery.

Mr. Gregory was born in the town of New Lisbon February 22, 1859. His parents were James A. and Martha (Benjamin) Gregory. Surviving are his wife, Madge Newitt, three children by a former marriage, Lynn of Dillion, Mont., George, Jr. of Rapid City. S. D., and Mrs. Clark Suits of Cramer's Corners, and three grandchildren, Helen Gregory of Rapid city, James and Edna Suits of Cramer's Corners. He also leaves one brother, John B. Gregory of Garrattsville.

Mr. Gregory taught school in various localities in the Butternut and Mohawk valleys for 49 years. He retired about 12 years ago and came to his native home at Garrattsville, where he had since resided. A member of the Baptist church at Welcome, he was well and favorably known by a wide circle of friends.

Mount Vision --- Gloria Pedwick became the bride of Kenneth Gregory Sunday afternoon in the parsonage of the Bible Baptist church in the presence of about twenty-five guests. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. G. Louis Jones,

pastor of the church.

Preceding the ceremony, Miss Barbara Jones sang, “I Love You Truly.”

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Pedwick of Mount Vision. The bride groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gregory of Mount Vision.

The couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Washburn.

After a wedding trip, they will reside on a farm near Mount Vision.

 Mary Boice Gale was my Aunt and she is the one that amassed
this genealogy collection which I inherited.  She married Edward F. Gale Nov. 25, 1948.

I  know most of the people in the photo and will post the names when I find the
complete lineup.

By the way, that is a young me on the left in the front row.  My brother Art is
beside me.  My Mom is behind me and Dad is holding my brother Red on the left
in the second row.

New Lisbon, Dec. 27---Mrs. Nellie T. Gregory, aged 81, died suddenly at her home at Garrattsville at 10:10 Saturday night, as the result of a heart ailment. Her funeral will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. Rev. George F. Adams of Oneonta, former pastor of the Mt. Vision Baptist church, will officiate and interment will be in Butternut Valley cemetery at Brick School house. Friends have been asked to omit flowers.

Addendum: I found the dates of her death on the Butternut Valley Cemetery site. And via my Ancestry.com page of Nellie T. Gregory, I found the rest of her information. She was born June 14 1856 to Anson Gregory 1830-1918 and Elizabeth Beeston (Duroe) Gregory 1832-1916.

In 1882 she married William Gregory 1821-1896.  A 4^th marriage for him at age 61. She would have been 26.

On the 1900 census she was living back home with her parents. She had 0 children listed.

On the 1930 census, she was living alone in New Lisbon, NY

Miss Isabelle Gardner of 24 Orchard, daughter of the late John and Amanda Gardner, and Clarence R. McIntosh, son of Mrs. Edward L. McIntosh of 40 Center were married Sunday afternoon at 3 by Rev. W. F. Hopkins at Elkton, Md.

Following a two-week wedding trip through the New England states, Mr. and Mrs. McIntosh will reside at Loudonville.

Comment: I believe this couple were residents of Oneonta, NY before their marriage.

Elbert S. Miller, 83, of 15 Greene St., Oxford, N. Y., died Friday, April 23, 1971 at his home following a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, the former Fannie Smith, Oxford; two daughters, Mrs. Wenzel (Florence) Roth, Encino, Calif., and Mrs. Gustave (Wanda) Heck, of Binghamton; 1 son, Russell Miller, Cazenovia; ten grandchildren, uncluding Mrs. Frances Kurau, Binghamton, 29 great-grandchildren, and 3 great, great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. From the Baptist church of Oxford with the Rev. George F. Dutton, pastor of the Oxford Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial followed at Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.

Addendum: Elbert Salisbury Miller was born June 11, 1987, the youngest of 6 children of Edward P. and Martha Ann Lewis Miller at East McDonough, Chenango County, NY.

His siblings were Annette 1871-1909, Hattie 1874-1936, Bertha Maud 1876-1948, and Lovisa E. 1878-1905 and Tracy Elnathan Miller 1883-1946.

His first wife was Inez M. Levisee (1887-sometime before 1820). She was the mother of his 5 children: Lucy Lovisa 1905-1926, Russell Budd 1907-1997, Florence Louise 1909-1996, Lowell N. 1910-1910, and Wanda Myrtle 1911-1990.

He married Fannie Mae Smith in 1820 and they celebrated their 50^th Anniversary in 1970. She died in 1972.

Martha Maud (Miller) Gale, Elbert's sister, was mother to my Uncle Edward Gale.

Celebrate 50^th Anniversary

OXFORD --- Mr. and Mrs. Elbert S. Miller, of 15 Greene St., Oxford, celebrated their 50^th wedding anniversary on Thursday, February 5^th. An open house was held at their home for friends, relatives and neighbors. Both are lifelong residents of Oxford, and Mr. Miller is a retired farmer.

They have three surviving children, Russell Miller of Cazenovia, N. Y.; Mrs. Wenzel Roth of Encino, California; Mrs. Wanda Heck of Binghamton, New York.

There are 10 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Out of town guests besides the children were Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Gale of Albany; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gale of Sidney; Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Decker of Sidney; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Decker of Greene; Mr. and Mrs. William Kuria of Binghamton; Gustave Heck and Mrs. Rita Coddington of Binghamton.

Many cards and flowers were received by the Millers and many of their friends and neighbors dropped in to congratulate them on this anniversary.

Mrs. Fannie Mae Smith Miller, 83, of 15 Greene St., Oxford, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 1972) at the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

She had been a life long resident of the Oxford area and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Oxford.

Her husband, Elbert S. Miller, died April 23, 1971.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gustave (Wanda) Heck of Binghamton and Mrs. Wenzel (Florence) Roth of Encino, Calif.; a son, Russell B. Miller of Cazenovia; a nephew, Douglas Decker of South Sidney; a grandniece, a grand nephew, 10 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchldren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Robert J. Fahy Funeral Home, Norwich. The Rev. George F. Dutton, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Oxford, will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.

Friends may call at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9.

New Lisbon, Jan. 16---Funeral services for Mrs. Martha J. (Mills) Nearing, who passed away Friday evening, were largely attended from the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. Ernst Thurston, at New Lisbon Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services were in charge of Rev. H. E. Danielson of the Morris Baptist church, assisted by Rev. Fred A. Mills of Brooklyn, nephew of Mrs. Nearing.

Three duets, “Under His Wing,” “How Firm a Foundation,” and “Abide With Me,” were sung by Rev. Mr.. Danielson and Rev. Mr.. Mills. Mr.. Mills also sang a solo at the closing of the service. Each paid a fitting tribute to the beautiful and quiet life lived by the deceased.

The beautiful flowers given by the family, individuals, Morris Baptist church, and neighbors spoke of the love and esteem for the deceased. Interment was beside her late husband and son, Elmer, in Hillington cemetery at Morris.

The bearers were Ira Harrison, Nelson Naylor, Howard Tilson and Frank Duroe.

Martha Jane Mills was born in the town of Morris, the only daughter of Lafayette and Sarah (Johnson) Mills. At the age of 15 she came with her parents to New Lisbon, where the family located on the farm known as the Mills homestead now owned by Howard Lull.

She married Orrin B. Nearing, a prosperous young farmer and business man of New Lisbon, April 28, 1868. About a year after their marriage, they moved to the Nearing farm here, where their entire wedded life was passed.

She was a woman with an unusual quiet, gentle disposition and a sincere Christian. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended the family.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Lavinia Thurston, with whom she lived; one son, Clarence Nearing of Portland, Ore., who was unable to attend the funeral; one granddaughter, Mrs. Frances Canastra of Delanson; a great grandson; a niece, Mrs. Catherine Hamilton of Oneonta; two nephews, Rev. Fred A. Mills and Lee J. Mills of Brooklyn.

Out-of-town friends who attended the funeral were from Hartwick, Unadilla, Morris, Oneonta, Brooklyn, and Delanson.

Addendum: I obtained the dates of her birth and death from history on Ancestry.com. These probably are close, but may not be completely accurate.

I came up with July 20, 1846 for her birth and January 12, 1934 for her death which would have made her 88 years old.

George D. Newton

Morris, Feb. 19---After an illness of over a year, George D. Newton, a life-long citizen of this town, passed away at the family home below Morris early Friday morning from the effects of heart trouble.

George Daniel Newton, youngest son of Horatio and Esther (Barrett) Newton, was born in the town of Morris March 26, 1861, on the site of the present home of David Adams, and here he spent his entire boyhood.

On January 1, 1883, Mr. Newton was united in marriage to Miss Jennie J. Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Smith of New Lisbon. Mr. and Mrs. Newton began housekeeping on the farm, about two miles below the village on the Morris-Gilbertsville highway, which they purchased and occupied continuously through-out their wedded life. To them were born four children, Albert Newton, Minnie Newton, Mrs. Marion (Newton) Niles and G. Channing Newton. The first two died a number of years ago, G. Channing Newton, with his family, has resided at the homestead since the failing health of the deceased made it impossible for him to operate the farm.

Mr. Newton was a man very sociable in his nature and made many friends, yet his chief interests were in his home, where as a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father, his memory will ever be cherished.

Immediate surviving relatives are the widow, one son and one daughter previously mentioned; Three grandchildren, Maurice Newton, of Carbondale, Pa., Katherine Niles and Patricia Newton of Morris, and one sister, Mrs. Charles Nearing of Gilbertsville, to all of whom much sympathy is extended.

The funeral, which was largely attended, was conducted by Rev. F. G. Leonard of the Morris Universalist church, at the family home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The remains were placed in the cemetery vault pending burial in the spring in the family plot on the new part of Hillington cemetery.

Morris, March 22---Mrs. R. R. Ripley, who had been critically ill at her Grove street home since her return from Havana, Cuba, early in February, died this afternoon at 1 o'clock.

A prayer will be offered at the Ripley home Monday afternoon at 1:30. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. L. Curtis Denney, will be in the family plot in the old part of Hillington cemetery.

Ripley Funeral Services to Be Held at Morris Today

Morris, March 24---After many months of illness Mrs. R. R.. Ripley passed away at the family home on Grove street Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock.

Mary (Wenmoth) Ripley, youngest child of William and Mary (Johnson) Wenmoth, was born June 23, 1866, in the village of Morris, where she spent her entire life.

In April, 1888, she married Raphael R. Ripley of Morris, who was widely known for his musical ability. Mr. Ripley died November 27, 1928. To them was born one son,  N. Alden Ripley of Havana, Cuba, who with his family, came to Morris early in February to be near his mother, then critically ill.

Mrs. Ripley was a consistent member of Zion Episcopal church, where she will be greatly missed. She was also a loyal member of Tianderah chapter,   D. A. R. ;  of the Butternut Valley Garden club;  secretary of the Morris chapter of the American Red Cross and one of the promoters of the Kenyon Free library since its organization.

Immediate surviving relatives are the son, one grandson, Alden Ripley, Jr., and numerous cousins, to all of whom sincere sympathy is extended.

A prayer will be offered at the home Monday afternoon at 1:30. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. L. Curtis Denney, will be held at Zion Episcopal church Monday at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the family plot in the old part of Hillington cemetery.

Addendum: According to several census reports,  Her father was born in England.  She was married to Raphael Ripley who was born January 1857.  They were married in 1888 and had at least one son Nelson born in 1898.

Mr. Harry B. Robbins, 69, Town of Columbus, died June 12, 1974 at his home following a long illness. He was born October 29, 1904 at Shickshinny, Pa., son of Ai and Gwen (Parry) Robbins.

Mr. Robbins was twice married: First to Edith Sult Shaffer on December 24, 1925, who died September 5, 1947 and second to Frances Bingham, June 24, 1950, who survives.

Other survivors include two daughters: Mrs. Arthur (Virginia) Boice and Mrs. Donald (Violet) Elliott, both of New Berlin; step-son, Leroy Shaffer, Star Route, Norwich; 14 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; four sisters: Mrs. John (Beulah) Roberts of Shickshinny, Pa., Mrs. Lloyd (Anna) Slentz of Manlius, Mrs. Morris (Letty) Blanding of Harrisburg, Pa., Mrs. Herbert (Amanda) Lyon of South New Berlin; one brother, Ivor Robbins of Wolcott; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robbins was a member and trustee of Columbus Community Church; Phoebus Lodge F. & A. M., New Berlin; Yahnundahsis Bodies, Mohawk Valley Consistory; Southern Tier Shrine Club; Ziyara Temple of Shrine, Utica. Mr. Robbins was a farmer for many years and for 17 years he was an employee of Kraft Foods, South Edmeston, retiring in 1967. He served for one term as an assessor in the Town of Columbus.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15 from the Columbus community Church with Rev. Stanley Wilson of Norwich, former Columbus pastor, officiating. Burial was made in the Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.

New Lisbon, Feb. 26---Relatives and near friends gathered at Card's hall Saturday to help Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Shepherd celebrate their 50^th wedding anniversary. The hall and tables were prettily decorated in yellow and white. A bountiful wedding dinner was served. A large bride's cake adorned the center of the bride's table. After the wedding feast Rev. Nelson B. Ripley gave a short speech and recited a poem composed by himself for the occasion.

On February 25, 1884, Miss Fannie Rooney, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rooney of Oneonta Plains, became the bride of Winfield Shepherd of Oneonta at the home of the bride's parents.

Rev. Nelson B. Ripley, then pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at Oneonta Plains, was the officiating clergyman. Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd have been residents of the town of New Lisbon for may years and who have a host of friends who will extend congratulations.

Guests present from out of town were Rev. and Mrs. Nelson B. Ripley of Milford, Sanford A. Shepherd of Oneonta, who were at their wedding 50 years ago; Mr. and Mrs. Emmerson Bull and daughter, Elizabeth and Mrs. Lucinda VanWoert of Oneonta; and Rev. C. E. Vermilya of Morris.

Addendum:  On the 1900 census, it states that Winfield and Fannie had been married 16 years and had one daughter, Agnes aged 15.  It states that Fannie had one child with one child living.

New Lisbon, Feb 8---Myron Charles Shultis, who died at the Jefferson hospital Sunday night from blood poisoning, cause from getting a sliver in one hand, was born at Yankeetown, Ulster county, April 14, 1879. His parents were Eugene and Sarah Shultis. When a young man he went to Delhi, where he made his home for several years with his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Shultis. He went to Grand Gorge about ten years ago, where he had since resided.

Mr. Shultis was never married. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal church at Delhi.

The funeral was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. N. Miller at Grand Gorge Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The body was placed in the local receiving vault.

His only surviving relatives are: One brother, Vernon Shultis of Oakland, N. J., and five cousins, Mrs. Bertha Robinson of Haddonfield, N. J., Mrs. Anna Conklin of Lew Beach, Mrs. Otis Shultis of New Lisbon, Edward Redgate of Edmeston, Ill., and James Cooper of Chicago, Ill.

Mrs. Anna B. Smith, 75, of Unadilla, died Sunday at 11 am. In Unadilla. She is survived by three grandchildren, Phillip Smith, of Syracuse, Mrs. James Kauzlarich, of Evanston, Ill., and Miss Randall Rae Smith, of Albany; two great grandchildren, Ann Louise Kauzlarich, and John Howard Kauzlarich, both of Evanston, Ill. She was born in Masonville, N. Y. October 3, 1881, the daughter of Hiram K. and Mary (Herrick) Boice. She married Howard Smith, of Sidney Center, in Sidney, May 14, 1903. Mr. Smith died several years ago. She had been a resident of Unadilla for about 40 years, and was a past matron of Order of the Eastern Star of Unadilla, a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Unadilla, and served as Otsego County Democratic Committeewoman for several years. Franklin, Aug. 7.---Miss Eunice Irene King, daughter of Superintendent and Mrs. W. C. King of Franklin, and Gerreth R. Smith of Unadilla, were united in marriage at the River Street Baptist parsonage in Oneonta by Rev. C. L. Dakin, Monday evening, August 5, at 8 o'clock. The bride and groom were atttended by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peake of Franklin. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have rented furnished rooms in Treadwell and went to their home on Monday evening. Both resumed their usual duties on Tuesday morning. Mr. Smith is the new stage driver from Treadwell to Franklin to Merrickville. Congratulations are extended the young couple.

Ramblings on getting sidetracked!

I didn't get back to get photos on Howard and Roscoe Smith's posts, but promise to in the future.  I want to keep the family all together, so am still looking for more of their articles.  In the mean time, I went on Howard's page on my Ancestry.com.  He was my great uncle.  Wow, I discovered he was one of 11 or 12 children, not to mention 4 half sibs from his father's first marriage.  He married my grandfather's sister Anna.

Then, I checked on Find A Grave and discovered his parents are buried just a few miles from me in Mt. Upton, NY.  Someone has done a beautiful job of tracing the family for several generations and added family photos which I always love.

When checking in Unadilla at the history room, there wasn't one piece of information about either Howard or Anna.  Howard was the Postmaster there for over 20 years!  I can sit home on my puter and come up with all this family information on Ancestry.com (especially via the census reports) and Find A Grave. Hours and hours of fun research.  Can you tell that I'm a genealogy addict?

Who would have thought of this modern age of computers?  Certainly not me graduating from high school in 1956.  Electric typewriters weren't even in at our school yet.  A calculator had buttons and a handle.  We've come a long way, baby!
