Thurston, Lavinia (Nearing) 1873-1951 New Lisbon Obituary

Former Area Teacher Dies

New Lisbon --- Mrs. J. Ernst Thruston, 77, a former school teacher in New Lisbon, died at 6 p. m. yesterday at Fox Hospital, Oneonta, where she had been a patient for the past three weeks.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday in Sloan's Funeral Home, Morris, with the Rev. J. Ross McCloy of the United Presbyterian Church, Garrattsville, officiating. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

A native of New Lisbon, Mrs. Thurston was born May 28, 1873, a daughter of Orrin and Martha Mills Nearing.

She attended Morris High School and graduated from Oneonta Normal School, following which she taught school in Morris, Cobleskill, Garrattsville, Naylor's Corners and New Lisbon.

A 50-year member of the Louisville Grange, Morris, and the New Lisbon Home Bureau, she was married on March 16, 1927, to J. Ernst Thurston.
Besides her husband she is survived by a niece, Mrs. Frances Canastra, Delancey, and two cousins, Mrs. Katherine Mills Hamilton of Oneonta and Lee Mills of Brooklyn..
