OTEGO — Luella Van Vranken, 84, of Otego, died at home on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003. She was born in the town of Butternuts on Dec. 13, 1918, to Adelbert and Grace Utter Filer.
She graduated from Gilbertsville High School and later married Abram "Bill" Van Vranken on Dec. 16, 1939. Together they owned and operated Mel-O-Med Farm from 1943 to 1988.
Luella was active in the community as a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville, former member of Covered Bridge Squares square dance club, Butternut Valley Grange of Gilbertsville, Butternut Valley Garden Club, Otego Hookers rug club, and the New York Holstein Friesian Association.
Luella is survived by daughters Mary Lou and husband, Kenneth Hammond, of Otego and Janet Nelson of Otego; brother, Carl and wife, Esther Filer, of Union Springs, N.Y.; sisters Wanda and husband, Ken Beach, of Morganton, N.C., Mildred and husband, John Van Vranken, of Edmeston, N.Y., and Esther Chandler of Hawley, Pa.; sister-in-law Phyllis Filer of Norwich, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Kenneth Hammond III, Karla Hammond, Amy and husband Frank Rock, Janie Hammond, Daniel and wife Annette Hammond, Ezra Hammond, Eric and wife Patti Hammond, Nicky Halperin, Seth Bordley, Tamara Nelson and Heidi Fischer; and six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jarvis, Marc and Tony Lizarraga, Sarah Hammond, Andrew Strum and Meredith Hammond.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Van Vranken, on Jan. 25, 1989; brothers, Donald Filer and Louis Filer; and sister, Gladys Barber.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, with the family in attendance.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Randy Palada at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.
Memorial donations may be made to Gilbertsville Emergency Squad, First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville or Catskill Area Hospice of Oneonta.
Burial will be in the spring at Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

OTEGO — Graveside committal service for Luella G. Van Vranken of Otego, who died Feb. 7, 2003, will be on Friday, June 20, at 2 p.m. at Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Randy Palada, officiating.
Immediately following the service the family will have a reception to greet friends at Bill's Park in Gilbertsville.
Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.
