EDMESTON — William John Durkin, 76, of Edmeston died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, May 14, 2003, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born Aug. 24, 1926, on Staten Island, the son of John and Elizabeth (Whyte) Durkin.
He married Barbara (Carey) Durkin, his wife of 55 years on Sept. 14, 1947. She survives.
Mr. Durkin grew up on Staten Island and was a graduate of New Dorp High School. He later moved to Edmeston, where he has been a resident since 1971.
He was employed as an oil burner serviceman for T.F. Quinlan & Sons of Staten Island for 39 years. Also worked as an elevator adjuster for the Otis Elevator Co.
Mr. Durkin proudly served with the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate during World War II.
He was a member of Senior Citizens groups in New Berlin, Edmeston, New Lisbon and Bridgewater; served as the treasurer for the Edmeston Senior Group; 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus.
He was a member of St. Theresa's of the Infant Jesus Church in New Berlin, and St. Anthony of Padua Church on Staten Island.
Mr. Durkin had a passion for learning and reading and enjoyed working with plants. His family always came first and he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Durkin is survived by his children, Barbara J. Durkin, Oneonta, Elaine and Gary Fortin, Wrightstown, N.J., Richard Durkin and Isaura Perez, Napierville, Ill., Arthur Durkin, Staten Island, and Sean and Suzanne Durkin, Staten Island; grandchildren, Christopher J. Fortin, Meaghan Siobhan Durkin Foy, Eric William Durkin, Kevin Patrick Durkin, Brian Francis Durkin and Erin Elizabeth Durkin; a great-grandchild, Sean Cailean Sanders Fortin; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother, George Durkin.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Sunday evening.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2003, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, with Father Francis Case of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, officiating.
Interment will be in the Edmeston Union Cemetery, Edmeston.
