MORRIS — John Hudson
Hall Jr., 73, a resident of Greenwich, Conn., and Morris died at Bassett
Hospital in Cooperstown on Friday, Sept., 10, 1999, due to
complications after an operation.Mr. Hall was the son of the late Katherine and John H. Hall of Hartsdale, and the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. Lewis R. Morris of New York City and Manor House Farms in Morris. He was the direct descendant of Lewis R. Morris, a New York signer of the Declaration of Independence, and General Jacob Morris, one of the earliest settlers of the Butternut Valley immediately following the American Revolution. He was also the great-grandson of William Andrews Clark, who was the first senator from Montana, and a noted art collector.
Mr. Hall was born in New York City and raised in Hartsdale. For several years he attended the Thomas School and Arizona Desert School in Tucson, Ariz., and then to Middlesex School in Concord, Mass. He received a bachelor's degree from Williams College and a master's degree in geology from Queens College, Ontario.
As a young man, he worked for Kennecott Copper Corp. as an exploration geologist. Later he worked as a portfolio manager for Carl M. Loeb Rhoades & Co. in New York City.
He served as chairman of The Philatelic Foundation in New York and was a member of the Board of Trustees of The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Erika P. Hall; and their two children, John R. Hall III of California and Carla Hall Friedman of New York City; as well as four grandchildren; and a brother, Lewis R.M. Hall of New York City and Morris.
A funeral service will take place in All Saints Chapel between Morris and Gilbertsville, on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Critical Care Unit of Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, Glimmerglass Opera, Cooperstown or Zion Church, Morris.
Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
