Introduction to Butternut Valley Family History

Hello, this is my first blog and first posting.  This is a big project that I've been organizing for sometime.  In my possession I have some 70 years of my Aunt Mary's genealogy research as well as more from my Grandma Susie on my mother's side of my family.  Both of them plus my parents were born and grew up in the beautiful Butternut Valley located fairly centrally in NY State in Otsego County.  Much of the information that I will be sharing is mostly from the Butternut Valley.   However, as we well know, families emigrate from places near and far and move on to other places, and those areas will be included, specifically, more of Otsego County,  Delaware and Chenango Counties.  I'm looking forward to sharing with you as well as hearing from you.

    1. Thanks Barbara. My very first comment. Can I tell the world we are new found cousins? And we are having a great time getting to know each other.

  2. Hi Donna,

This is really good. I see in one post you were concerned about finding a way to organize the information. The search feature for the blog is so good I don't think that you need to worry about it. In the early days of computers searches could be very time consuming - now new additions are indexed as they are added and kept up to date - so really time spent organizing just gets in the way of adding to the store of information.

One thing you might consider is adding information from the Morris newspaper(s) first if you have any way of finding them first. If you are working from clippings you might not be able to tell which paper they are from because the top of the newspaper page might be missing.

The site http://fultonhistory.com already has The Otsego Farmer, The Brookfield Courier, The Richfield Springs Mercury and a few others -- but I have never found any of the Morris papers listed on it.

Your photos on findagrave.com, especially from the Harmony Cemetery in Morris are really good. Somehow you got there when the light was hitting some of the stones that I only see in heavy shade. My work schedule might have something to do with that.

    Thanks again for your efforts.

  3. Thank you Bob,
Your note and advice is very much appreciated. You are correct that since I'm working from clippings, very few tell me what newspaper they came from. I'm just overjoyed if a year of the event is handwritten in, and even then, they aren't always correct. I figure a rough estimate of year is better than none.

I pretty much gave up the idea of being able to organize better, I've been adding back to front in my stored files so it kinda ends up going alphabeticly. And your point about the search engine indexing is very true.

Thank you for telling me about http://fultonhistory.com again. I had forgotten about that.

And yes, I happened to be at Harmony Cemetery at just the right time for some of those photos and not so optimum at other times. Some of those photos go back a few years and the monuments were still in better condition, thankfully.

Thanks again. Lots more to come. Donna
