William B. Southworth Dies
At Residence in New Lisbon

New Lisbon, Feb. 13.----William B. Southworth, a life long and much esteemed resident of this community, died at the family home here Wednesday at 6:45 following a three-year illnesss with hardening of the arteries.
Mr. Southworth was born but a short distance from the home where he had lived for 13 years. The second son of Robert and Amanda (Garlock) Southworth, he was born January 29, 1863.
On September 23, 1885, he was united in marriage with Della E. Carr of New Lisbon. To them was born one son, Claude R. Southworth, now of Yardley, Pa.
Surviving beside his wife and son mentioned are two brothers, Clessen Southworth of South New Berlin and Charles Southworth of New Lisbon; one niece, Mrs. Levi George of New Lisbon, and several cousins.
The funeral will be held at his late home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. E. E. Hutchinson of Morris will officiate. Interment will be in Hillington cemetery.

Held at New Lisbon Saturday

New Lisbon, Feb. 18----A large number of friends attended the funeral of the late William R. Southworth, held at the family home, Saturday afternoon: gathered to pay a final tribute to one whose entire life had been passed among them and whose passing brings deep sorrow to all.

Rev. E. E. Hutchinson, rector of Zion church at Morris and personal friend of the family, officiated. After reading the church service and two selected hymns, he gave a brief but fitting tribute to the life and personality of the deceased, closing with prayer. The floral tributes were beautiful. Beside those given by near relatives were pieces from the neighbors and from the pupils of the Yardley High school, in which the son, Claude R. Southworth, is janitor and Mrs. Southworth a teacher. The bearers were Andrew Myers, George Myers, Andrew Carleton and Ernst Thurston.

Interment was in Hillington cemetery. Friends from out of town in attendance were: C.R. Southworth of Yardley, Pa.; Mrs. H. Carr and John Carr of Herkimer; Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Pittsley of Maple Grove; Wesley Sutton of Otsego, and Mr. and Mrs. Granville Jester of Morris.

"NEW LISBON - Mrs. Anna Strait, wife of Bert Strait passed away shortly after noon, Saturday, June 21st at her home at New Lisbon, at the age of sixty-one. She had been in declining health for nearly four years with Hodgkins disease and since January confined to her bed. The funeral was held from the Stilwell Funeral parlors at Hartwick, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. William Gartshore, pastor of the United Presbyterian church at Garrattsville officiated, assisted by the Rev. C. E. Vermilya of the Methodist church. Interment was in Hillington cemetery at Morris ... Anna Grayson Bertwell was born in Providence, R. I., August 13, 1879. Her parents, William and Hannah Grayson, came from England. She was twice married, her first husband, Harold Bertwell, to whom she was married nearly thirty-five years ago, died a number of years ago. Their entire married life was passed in Providence and Warwick, R. I. Coming to New Lisbon, she married Bert Strat of Morris, June 15, 1935, their home being at New Lisbon since their marriage. Surviving besides her husband are one brother, J. Grayson of Providence; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ella Grayson and one niece, Mrs. Pearl Perkins of Warwick, together with a wide circle of friends who unite with the family in their sorrow." NEW LISBON---Funeral services for Bert Strait, 83, who died Monday, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Sloan Funeral Parlor in Morris with the Rev. E. Scott Farley, retired minister of Oneonta officiating. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.
Mr. Strait was born March 29, 1873 in the Town of Laurens, a son of James and Florence (Lent) Strait. He married Lela Frick of Otego on Dec. 24, 1900. She died July 8, 1934. Most of their married life was spent in the Township of Laurens.
On June 11, 1935 he married Mrs. Anna Butwell of Rhode Island and they lived in New Lisbon until she died June 21, 1941.
A farmer nearly all his life he was a member of the Morris Methodist Church.
Surviving are one brother, James Strait, New Lisbon; one sister, Mrs. Mabelle Sutherland, Ontario, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will be in attendance at the Sloan Funeral Home, Morris from 7-9 p. m.

Dies at Parshall Hospital Here—Funeral Wednesday

Morris, July 10---After many weeks of suffering, Mrs. Bert Strait of Hargrave street, Morris, passed away at the Parshall hospital, Oneonta, where she had been a patient for over a week, Sunday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, due to a complication of diseases.
Lelah M. Fish, youngest of the four children of Moses and Lydia (Lamb) Fish, was born, August 9, 1875, in Otego, in which township she spent her girlhood.
On December 25, 1900, she was united in marriage to Bert Strait. Mr. and Mrs. Strait resided in Otego for a year, after which they lived in the town of Butternuts for three years and since that time, have always had a home in Morris, where Mr. Strait is now assisting in the Dr. F. I Reed Animal hospital.
The deceased was a woman, whose enthusiastic interest anddesire to be of service to others was very marked. Sincerely devoted to her home and to her church, and always active in the various branches of the latter as long as her health permitted, she leaves a host of friends, who will cherish her memory.
The immediate surviving relatives are the husband and a sister, Mrs. Chloe Sheldon of Otego, one nephew and one niece, to all of whom much sympathy is extended.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Dr. C. E. Vermilya of the Methodist church, will be held at Stillwell's Undertaking parlors in Hartwick Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the family plot in the new part of Hillington cemetery, Morris.

Charles Thompson Of Oneonta Dies

Charles E. Thomson died at his home, 381 Chestnut St., at 2:30 p. m. yesterday.

Funeral services will be held at Bookhout Funeral Home at 2 p. m. Friday. The Rev. Charles H. McClung, pastor of United Presbyterian church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until Friday noon.

Mr. Thomson was born at Elk Creek, Delhi, Aug. 31, 1874, son of Ezekiel and Amelia (White) Thompson. On Feb. 17, 1897 he married Almira Thomson of New Kingston.

The first few years of his married life were spent on the Thompson Homestead at Elk Creek and in 1906 he moved to Oneonta. He is a past master of Oneonta Grange.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Wendell Couse, Oneonta, and Mrs. Carlton Estabrook. Susquehanna, Pa., a son, Howard Thompson, Oneonta; four brothers, James and Russell of Delhi, Leslie of Oneonta and Maynard of St. Petersburg, Fla., and three grandchildren all of Oneonta.

Takes His Own Life

New Lisbon---J. Ernst Thurston, 78-year-old farmer and lifetime resident of New Lisbon, yesterday committed suicide by hanging, according to Dr. John Merzig, Morris, acting coroner who pronounced the verdict.

The body of Mr. Thurston was found in his barn by Robert Joy, Morris, a business caller.  The body was taken to the Sloan Funeral Home, Morris, where arrangements are pending.

 

Mr. Thurston was born Jan. 2, 1875, on the New Lisbon farm where he had always resided, son of Julius and Lucy (Duroe) Thurston. His grandparents were among the first settlers of the Butternuts Valley.

He married Lavinia Nearing, who died May 14, 1951. He later married Mrs. Frances Lull, Morris, on Dec. 1, 1951.

He was a member of the Louisville Grange, Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge, all of Morris, and the Farm Bureau.

Surviving is his wife; one sister, Mrs. Vera Klindt, Morris; two nephews and a niece.

Jan. 1953, NEW LISBON---Funeral services for J. Ernst Thurston, who died Thursday at his New Lisbon home, were held Sunday at the Morris Methodist Church.

The Rev. Kenneth Gombert, pastor of the church, and the Rev. J. Ross McCloy, pastor of the Garrattsville United Presbyterian Church, officiated. The body was placed in the Hillington Cemetery vault at Morris for later burial there.

Bearers were: William Dockstader, Leroy George, Jay Clark, Harold Lasher, Roy Gilbert and Owen Douglas.

Attending from out-of-town were: Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Cleveland, Mrs. Katherine Hamilton and Earl Hay, Oneonota; Mrs. Emma Stanton and daughter of Laurens; Mr and Mrs. Harmon Cleveland, Mount Vision; the Misses Eliza and Ruth Duroe, Norwich; Mario Caldera, Williamsport, Pa., and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Canaster and son, Howard, of Delanson.

Mrs. Mary Ash, Waterbury, Vt.; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Moore, Oriskany Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Richard LaClair, son, Thomas and daughter Nancy, of Oneida; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Maynard, Clarence Lamphere, Norwich, and Peter Gaffney, Utica.

His survivors include four nephews and three nieces, who are Harmon Cleveland, Mount Vision; Maurice Cleveland, Oneonta, Robert and Francis Klindt, Morris, Miss Marion Cleveland, Norwich, and Mrs. Evelyn Caldwera, Williamsport, Pa.

Addendum: He always seemed to go by J. Ernst Thurston. His given name was Joel Ernst Thurston.

Former Area Teacher Dies

New Lisbon --- Mrs. J. Ernst Thruston, 77, a former school teacher in New Lisbon, died at 6 p. m. yesterday at Fox Hospital, Oneonta, where she had been a patient for the past three weeks.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday in Sloan's Funeral Home, Morris, with the Rev. J. Ross McCloy of the United Presbyterian Church, Garrattsville, officiating. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

A native of New Lisbon, Mrs. Thurston was born May 28, 1873, a daughter of Orrin and Martha Mills Nearing.

She attended Morris High School and graduated from Oneonta Normal School, following which she taught school in Morris, Cobleskill, Garrattsville, Naylor's Corners and New Lisbon.

A 50-year member of the Louisville Grange, Morris, and the New Lisbon Home Bureau, she was married on March 16, 1927, to J. Ernst Thurston.

Besides her husband she is survived by a niece, Mrs. Frances Canastra, Delancey, and two cousins, Mrs. Katherine Mills Hamilton of Oneonta and Lee Mills of Brooklyn..
