Mrs. R. R. Ripley of Morris Succumbs

Morris, March 22---Mrs. R. R. Ripley, who had been critically ill at her Grove street home since her return from Havana, Cuba, early in February, died this afternoon at 1 o'clock.

A prayer will be offered at the Ripley home Monday afternoon at 1:30. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. L. Curtis Denney, will be in the family plot in the old part of Hillington cemetery.

Ripley Funeral Services to Be Held at Morris Today

Morris, March 24---After many months of illness Mrs. R. R.. Ripley passed away at the family home on Grove street Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock.

Mary (Wenmoth) Ripley, youngest child of William and Mary (Johnson) Wenmoth, was born June 23, 1866, in the village of Morris, where she spent her entire life.

In April, 1888, she married Raphael R. Ripley of Morris, who was widely known for his musical ability. Mr. Ripley died November 27, 1928. To them was born one son,  N. Alden Ripley of Havana, Cuba, who with his family, came to Morris early in February to be near his mother, then critically ill.

Mrs. Ripley was a consistent member of Zion Episcopal church, where she will be greatly missed. She was also a loyal member of Tianderah chapter,   D. A. R. ;  of the Butternut Valley Garden club;  secretary of the Morris chapter of the American Red Cross and one of the promoters of the Kenyon Free library since its organization.

Immediate surviving relatives are the son, one grandson, Alden Ripley, Jr., and numerous cousins, to all of whom sincere sympathy is extended.

A prayer will be offered at the home Monday afternoon at 1:30. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. L. Curtis Denney, will be held at Zion Episcopal church Monday at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the family plot in the old part of Hillington cemetery.

Addendum: According to several census reports,  Her father was born in England.  She was married to Raphael Ripley who was born January 1857.  They were married in 1888 and had at least one son Nelson born in 1898.

HARRY B. ROBBINS

Mr. Harry B. Robbins, 69, Town of Columbus, died June 12, 1974 at his home following a long illness. He was born October 29, 1904 at Shickshinny, Pa., son of Ai and Gwen (Parry) Robbins.

Mr. Robbins was twice married: First to Edith Sult Shaffer on December 24, 1925, who died September 5, 1947 and second to Frances Bingham, June 24, 1950, who survives.

Other survivors include two daughters: Mrs. Arthur (Virginia) Boice and Mrs. Donald (Violet) Elliott, both of New Berlin; step-son, Leroy Shaffer, Star Route, Norwich; 14 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; four sisters: Mrs. John (Beulah) Roberts of Shickshinny, Pa., Mrs. Lloyd (Anna) Slentz of Manlius, Mrs. Morris (Letty) Blanding of Harrisburg, Pa., Mrs. Herbert (Amanda) Lyon of South New Berlin; one brother, Ivor Robbins of Wolcott; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robbins was a member and trustee of Columbus Community Church; Phoebus Lodge F. & A. M., New Berlin; Yahnundahsis Bodies, Mohawk Valley Consistory; Southern Tier Shrine Club; Ziyara Temple of Shrine, Utica. Mr. Robbins was a farmer for many years and for 17 years he was an employee of Kraft Foods, South Edmeston, retiring in 1967. He served for one term as an assessor in the Town of Columbus.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15 from the Columbus community Church with Rev. Stanley Wilson of Norwich, former Columbus pastor, officiating. Burial was made in the Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.

Honored at Gathering at New Lisbon

New Lisbon, Feb. 26---Relatives and near friends gathered at Card's hall Saturday to help Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Shepherd celebrate their 50^th wedding anniversary. The hall and tables were prettily decorated in yellow and white. A bountiful wedding dinner was served. A large bride's cake adorned the center of the bride's table. After the wedding feast Rev. Nelson B. Ripley gave a short speech and recited a poem composed by himself for the occasion.

On February 25, 1884, Miss Fannie Rooney, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rooney of Oneonta Plains, became the bride of Winfield Shepherd of Oneonta at the home of the bride's parents.

Rev. Nelson B. Ripley, then pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at Oneonta Plains, was the officiating clergyman. Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd have been residents of the town of New Lisbon for may years and who have a host of friends who will extend congratulations.

Guests present from out of town were Rev. and Mrs. Nelson B. Ripley of Milford, Sanford A. Shepherd of Oneonta, who were at their wedding 50 years ago; Mr. and Mrs. Emmerson Bull and daughter, Elizabeth and Mrs. Lucinda VanWoert of Oneonta; and Rev. C. E. Vermilya of Morris.

Addendum:  On the 1900 census, it states that Winfield and Fannie had been married 16 years and had one daughter, Agnes aged 15.  It states that Fannie had one child with one child living.

New Lisbon, Feb 8---Myron Charles Shultis, who died at the Jefferson hospital Sunday night from blood poisoning, cause from getting a sliver in one hand, was born at Yankeetown, Ulster county, April 14, 1879. His parents were Eugene and Sarah Shultis. When a young man he went to Delhi, where he made his home for several years with his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Shultis. He went to Grand Gorge about ten years ago, where he had since resided.

Mr. Shultis was never married. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal church at Delhi.

The funeral was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. N. Miller at Grand Gorge Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The body was placed in the local receiving vault.

His only surviving relatives are: One brother, Vernon Shultis of Oakland, N. J., and five cousins, Mrs. Bertha Robinson of Haddonfield, N. J., Mrs. Anna Conklin of Lew Beach, Mrs. Otis Shultis of New Lisbon, Edward Redgate of Edmeston, Ill., and James Cooper of Chicago, Ill.

Mrs. Anna B. Smith, 75, of Unadilla, died Sunday at 11 am. In Unadilla. She is survived by three grandchildren, Phillip Smith, of Syracuse, Mrs. James Kauzlarich, of Evanston, Ill., and Miss Randall Rae Smith, of Albany; two great grandchildren, Ann Louise Kauzlarich, and John Howard Kauzlarich, both of Evanston, Ill. She was born in Masonville, N. Y. October 3, 1881, the daughter of Hiram K. and Mary (Herrick) Boice. She married Howard Smith, of Sidney Center, in Sidney, May 14, 1903. Mr. Smith died several years ago. She had been a resident of Unadilla for about 40 years, and was a past matron of Order of the Eastern Star of Unadilla, a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Unadilla, and served as Otsego County Democratic Committeewoman for several years. Friends may call at the Smith home in Unadilla at their convenience. Arrangements by the Joyce Funeral Chapel, Unadilla.

Franklin, Aug. 7.---Miss Eunice Irene King, daughter of Superintendent and Mrs. W. C. King of Franklin, and Gerreth R. Smith of Unadilla, were united in marriage at the River Street Baptist parsonage in Oneonta by Rev. C. L. Dakin, Monday evening, August 5, at 8 o'clock. The bride and groom were atttended by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peake of Franklin. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have rented furnished rooms in Treadwell and went to their home on Monday evening. Both resumed their usual duties on Tuesday morning. Mr. Smith is the new stage driver from Treadwell to Franklin to Merrickville. Congratulations are extended the young couple.

Ramblings on getting sidetracked!

I didn't get back to get photos on Howard and Roscoe Smith's posts, but promise to in the future.  I want to keep the family all together, so am still looking for more of their articles.  In the mean time, I went on Howard's page on my Ancestry.com.  He was my great uncle.  Wow, I discovered he was one of 11 or 12 children, not to mention 4 half sibs from his father's first marriage.  He married my grandfather's sister Anna.

Then, I checked on Find A Grave and discovered his parents are buried just a few miles from me in Mt. Upton, NY.  Someone has done a beautiful job of tracing the family for several generations and added family photos which I always love.

When checking in Unadilla at the history room, there wasn't one piece of information about either Howard or Anna.  Howard was the Postmaster there for over 20 years!  I can sit home on my puter and come up with all this family information on Ancestry.com (especially via the census reports) and Find A Grave. Hours and hours of fun research.  Can you tell that I'm a genealogy addict?

Who would have thought of this modern age of computers?  Certainly not me graduating from high school in 1956.  Electric typewriters weren't even in at our school yet.  A calculator had buttons and a handle.  We've come a long way, baby!
