Howard W. Smith Passed Away Friday

Howard W. Smith, 73, a well known resident of this community for many years and Unadilla Postmaster for 17 years previous to his retirement four years ago, passed away at his home on Main street at 3 a. m. last Friday. He had been in poor health for the past four years.

Mr. Smith was born November 9, 1880 in Sidney Center, the son of the late Ira and Amelia (Peet) Smith. He married Miss Anna Boice of Trout Creek, in Sidney in 1903. He operated a meat market in Sidney Center for several years, before moving to Unadilla 42 years ago, where he engaged in the lumber business for about 21 years before becoming postmaster. He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal church of Unadilla, the BPO Elks Lodge of Oneonta, Freedom Lodge 324, F. & A. M. , and a charter member of the Unadilla Rotary Club.

Possessing a genial disposition and a kind and generous heart, Mr. Smith was held in high esteem by his many friends throughout a wide area. He was always interested and active in community affairs and a keen supporter of public enterprise.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna (Boice) Smith, of Unadilla; two sisters, Mrs. George Fowlston of Oneonta, and Mrs. Nelson Wilcox of Rochester; a brother, Rupert Smith, of Maryland, N. Y.; two grandchildren, Mrs. James Kauzlarich, of Schenectady, and Phillip Smith, with the U. S. Air Force, stationed at Andrew's Air Force Base, Washinton, D. C.; a great granddaughter, Anna Louise Kauzlarich, of Schenectady.

A Masonic service was held at the home at 7:30 p. m. Sunday by members of Freedom Lodge No. 324, F. & A. M.

Funeral services were held in St. Matthew's Episcopal church Monday at 2:00 p. m. with the Rev. Alonzo L. Wood, rector, officiating. The bearers were Robert Kinch, Floyd Doolittle, Wayne Tyson, Lee Murphy, Arthur Westcott and Robert D'Imperio. Honorary bearers were Joseph Leary, Clifford Isbell, Earl Frost, Lee Starr, Edwin Weldman and Jay Bedell. Interment was made in Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

The funeral was attended by a large number of relatives and friends from many sections of the state, some coming long distances to pay their respects to their highly esteemed friend.

Roscoe B. Smith, 27, died Tuesday afternoon at his home in Unadilla, following an attack of pneumonia. Mr. Smith was born at Otego, June 1, 1907. He is survived by his parents, Postmaster and Mrs. Howard Smith, and a brother, Gerreth Smith, of Unadilla.

About three years ago Mr. Smith operated the gas station at the corner of Birdsall and East Main streets. He was a member of the Norwich lodge of Elks.

Funeral services will be held from the home at 1:30 Saturday afternoon and at 2 o'clock from the Episcopal church in Unadilla.

Popular Unadilla Man Dies Following

Complications Due to Pneumonia

UNADILLA, April 17,---Roscoe Bernard Smith, 28, died at the home of his parents Tuesday afternoon at 1:15 o'clock after an illness of five weeks from complications following pneumonia.

He was born in Otego, June 1, 1907 and was the younger son of Postmaster Howard W and Anna (Boice) Smith. Nearly all his life was spent in Unadilla, moving here with his parents from Otego when he was about four years old.

He was graduated from the Unadilla High School with the class of '25. He was a member of St. Matthew's Epsicopal Church, a teacher in the church school, and for several years has been acolyte in St. Matthews. He was a member of the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club and of the Norwich Lodge, P. P. O. E.

For several years he was employed in Norwich by the Standard Oil Company, returning to Unadilla in 1932 when he became associated with his father in the lumber business. He was census enumerator for 1935 for the Town of Unadilla.

The funeral will be held Saturday with a prayer at the home at 1:30, followed by a service at St. Matthews at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Yale Lyon, rector of that church will conduct the service. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

Surviving are his parents, one brother, Garreth Smith, one niece, Sally Ann; one nephew, Phillip Smith all of Unadilla; four uncles, Frank Boice of Garrattsville, George and Rupert Smith of Unadilla, Raymond Smith of Schenectady; four aunts, Mrs. N. E.Wilcox, Mrs. Charles Eldred of Bainbridge, Mrs. William Jones of Sidney Center and Mrs. George Fowlston of Oneonta.

Unadilla, April 21---The funeral of Roscoe Bernard Smith, who died at his home Tuesday, was largely attended Saturday. There was a prayer service at the home at 1:30, followed by a service at St. Matthew's Episcopal church, of which he was an active member. Rev. Yale Lyon, rector of the church, conducted the service. Burial was made in Evergreen Hill cemetery.

There were many floral tributes, including tributes from the neighbors of Martin Brook street, Maple avenue and Depot street: the B. P. O .E. of Norwich; St. Paul's church, Franklin; Unadilla Democratic club; the faculty of the Central school; children of bus No. 2, and from the employes of the post office.

Mrs. Claude Tilley Passes Away at Home in Hartwick

Hartwick, March 24---Mrs. Claude Tilley, 30 years old, died Tuesday morning at 6:30 o'clock, following childbirth. Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the Hartwick Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. G. E. Young officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in the Hartwick cemetery.

Mrs. Tilley was born in Jordanville, January 16, 1901, the daughter of Scfroit J. and Minnie McDonald King. In 1923 she was united in marriage to Claude Tilley of Hartwick. She attended the Jordanville school and later worked in the post office. She was an active member of the Hartwick Methodist Episcopal church.

Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Doris Louise and Lila Marie Tilley, her father and mother mentioned above and a brother, Barney King, all of whom reside in Fly Creek. There are also several nephews and nieces.

Dies at Hospital in Norwich

Mrs. Henry A. Tobey of Morris, dies Monday afternoon at 12:50 o'clock at the Chenango Memorial hospital at Norwich.

Mrs. Ada May Tobey was born November 7, 1873, the daughter of Almo and Pamela Stewart Lull. She was united in marriage to Henry Tobey, October 26, 1891, and they have resided in and near Morris since that time.

She is survived, besides her husband, by her mother, Mrs. Pamela Lull, and four brothers, Edwin Lull of Oneonta, Scott and Clarence Lull of Morris and Frank B. Lull of Binghamton.

The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home, upper Main street at Morris.

Mrs. Tobey was a woman keenly devoted to her home and to her husband and to him is extended the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.

Succumbs at Welcome

New Lisbon, July 26---Mrs. Chauncey A. Yager died at her home at Welcome at 3:45 this morning. She succumbed to complications following a three-month illness.

Funeral services will be hld Tuesday afternoon. A prayer service for the family will be held at the home at 1:30, followed by services in the Baptist church at Welcome at 2 o'clock, Rev. C. J. Hurlbutt, pastor of the Baptist church, will officiate. Interment will be made in Lena cemetery.

Laura May Thortz was born at New Lisbon, July 2, 1890, the only daughter of Henry and Jennie (Babcock) Thortz. Novenber 27, 1913, she married Mr. Yager at new Lisbon.

Practically her entire life had been spent on the farm where she died. She was a member of the Welcome Baptist church and a woman of unusual quietness, much devoted to her home and family.

Surviving besides her husband are nine children, Stanley Yager of Hartwick, Gertrude, Alice, Doris, Thelma, Ada, Martha, Ellanav and Chauncey, Jr., all residing at home; her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Harrington, of Lena, and one half sister, Mrs. Morris Chase of Hartwick. Many friends will join the family in its sorrow.
