       Howard J. Lull
EDMESTON — Howard J. Lull Jr., 84, of Edmeston, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at his home.
He was born June 19, 1919, in Oneonta, the son of Howard J. Lull Sr., and Glenadore (Ackley) Lull.
He married Rena Allen on Aug. 1, 1944, at the Methodist Church in Biloxi, Miss.
Howard, affectionately known as Coach, retired from Edmeston Central School where he had taught Social Studies, Physical Education, Health, and Drivers Ed. Additionally, he coached football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, golf and bowling.
He was a member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Post No. 1311, serving his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945.
Howard was inducted to the Section IV New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Hall of Fame 1992, and the Tri Valley Hall of Fame in 2001.
He was a past member of the Edmeston Fire Department, the New York State Teachers Association, and past president of the Edmeston Rotary.
Howard enjoyed life. He encouraged many students to go the extra mile not only in sports but in their life.
He was a terrific friend, loving husband and super dad, and his granddaughters' idol.
Howard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rena; his daughters, Rena Mae Lull of Cooperstown, and Rita Lee and Roger Clark of Lyons; and two granddaughters, Karen and her husband, Brian Hart and Elizabeth Clark.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht and the Rev. John Blackman, officiating.
A family reception will be held at the Edmeston Fire House following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Howard's name to the Edmeston Emergency Squad, envelopes will be available at the church.

EDMESTON — Irene Osborn, 94, of Burlington Flats, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at The Meadows in Middlefield.
She was born Oct. 7, 1908, in Edmeston, the daughter or Irwin and Lena Delphina (Sitts) Davis.
She married Clayton Osborn on Nov. 19, 1924, in Edmeston. He predeceased her on July 9, 1973.
Irene was a devoted mother and wife. She is honored by her family and all who knew her and have received the comfort of her presence.
She was a member of the Burlington Flats Baptist Church and The Friendly Neighbors Club.
As a homemaker she was noted for her baking skills which included breads, pies and molasses cookies. Irene also tended her home and family with her knitting, crocheting and her flower and vegetable gardens. Her leisure time was spent reading and memorizing poetry.
Irene is survived by her children and their spouses, Margery and Stewart Emhof, Janice and Max Kennedy, Bradley C. and Rose Osborn, Donald Osborn and his special friend, Irene, and Duane E. and Carolyn Osborn; her sister, Edna Palmater; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Irene was also predeceased by her grandson, Christopher; and her two sisters, Gladys Marr and Mildred Brownell.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
Interment will be at the Burlington Flats Cemetery following the service.
Contributions may be made in Irene's memory to either the Burlington Flats Baptist Church or the Catskill Area Hospice.

William John Durkin
EDMESTON — William John Durkin, 76, of Edmeston died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, May 14, 2003, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born Aug. 24, 1926, on Staten Island, the son of John and Elizabeth (Whyte) Durkin.
He married Barbara (Carey) Durkin, his wife of 55 years on Sept. 14, 1947. She survives.
Mr. Durkin grew up on Staten Island and was a graduate of New Dorp High School. He later moved to Edmeston, where he has been a resident since 1971.
He was employed as an oil burner serviceman for T.F. Quinlan & Sons of Staten Island for 39 years. Also worked as an elevator adjuster for the Otis Elevator Co.
Mr. Durkin proudly served with the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate during World War II.
He was a member of Senior Citizens groups in New Berlin, Edmeston, New Lisbon and Bridgewater; served as the treasurer for the Edmeston Senior Group; 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus.
He was a member of St. Theresa's of the Infant Jesus Church in New Berlin, and St. Anthony of Padua Church on Staten Island.
Mr. Durkin had a passion for learning and reading and enjoyed working with plants. His family always came first and he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Durkin is survived by his children, Barbara J. Durkin, Oneonta, Elaine and Gary Fortin, Wrightstown, N.J., Richard Durkin and Isaura Perez, Napierville, Ill., Arthur Durkin, Staten Island, and Sean and Suzanne Durkin, Staten Island; grandchildren, Christopher J. Fortin, Meaghan Siobhan Durkin Foy, Eric William Durkin, Kevin Patrick Durkin, Brian Francis Durkin and Erin Elizabeth Durkin; a great-grandchild, Sean Cailean Sanders Fortin; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother, George Durkin.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Sunday evening.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2003, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, with Father Francis Case of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, officiating.
Interment will be in the Edmeston Union Cemetery, Edmeston.

EDMESTON — Charles W. Gelatt, 85, of Edmeston, went to be with the Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 8, 2003.
He was born June 17, 1918, in Susquehanna, Pa.. the son of Ralph D. and Ethel (Conrad) Gelatt.
He married Jennie E. Silver on Aug. 12, 1938, in Thompson, Pa.
Charlie served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was a member of the Berean Baptist Church in New Berlin, where he had also served as past deacon. He was a member of the Horse & Carriage Cherry Valley Driving Association, and the Carriage Association of America.
Charlie was well-known for his love of his horses, carriages and barn. However, he always put God and his family as his first priority, a trait that he instilled in his children.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jennie; his children and their spouses, Marjorie and Cecil Watts, Betty and Richard Senrka, Connie and David Eckert, Carl Gelatt, Cheryl and Mark Rittgers, Sharon Silver, Randy and Susan Gelatt, Meradee and Daniel Schollig, and Gary and Selina Gelatt; his grandchildren, Tina, Al, Rosella, Bill, Bob, Loraine, Daniel, S.J., Jody, Paul, David, Daniel, David, Rebekah, Aaron, Daniel, Sarah, John, Danielle, Charles W. III, Dennis, Maverick, Maradee, Luke, Kari, Krista, Kimberlee, Nick, Sara, Adam, Daniel, Derek, Denyse, Colin, Emily, Amanda, Tanner and Jennie; 30 great-grandchildren; his brother, David Gelatt; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Charlie was predeceased by one son, Charles W. Gelatt Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2003, at the Berean Baptist Church in New Berlin, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Gary Foltz and Pastor Jay Henderson officiating. Calling hours will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral service.
Interment will be at Edmeston Union Cemetery, Edmeston.

EDMESTON — Borghild (Betty) Wust, 86, of Cooperstown, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
She had resided at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown for approximately one and a half years.
She was born on November 19, 1916 in Bergen, Norway, the daughter of Hans and Hanna Hovick.
She married Karl Johnson in 1935 who predeceased her in December of 1988.
She is survived by their children, Rev. Henry Johnson and wife, Janet, of Chambersburg, PA, Lennart Johnson and wife, Carol, of Burlington, Linnea Nelson and husband, Larry, of Hartwick; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Amy and Jay Lyon and family of Burlington, Alan and Keri Johnson and family of Burlington, Kristopher Johnson of Oneonta, Matthew Nelson of Mount Vision, Bryce Nelson of Hartwick, Karla Johnson, Kristine Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson.
She was also predeceased by a grandson, David Johnson, in 2001.
She married William Wust of Edmeston in 1989 who predeceased her in December of 2002.
Surviving are her stepchildren and their families, Charles and Nadine Wust, Sidney Wust, William Jr. and Susan Wust, John and Shelly Wust, and Richard and Michele Wust, all of Edmeston.
Borghild was a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church in West Burlington. She was active in Home Bureau and served as a 4-H leader.
She was well known for her culinary talents and owned and operated the Karlsborg Tourist Farm with her husband for many years.
She worked as a chef for Stephen Clark of Cooperstown for thirteen years and also worked at the Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.
She loved to read and enjoyed her many plants and flowers. She will be long remembered for her generosity, gentleness and caring way.
The family expresses its heartfelt thanks to her sister, Erna Richards, her brother and his wife, Henry and Nell Hovick, for all their love and support. Also to their family friend, Ingeborg Quitzau and to Peggy and the staff at Woodside Hall for their kindness and caring.
Calling hours will be held at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin on Thursday, February 20 from 4-7 PM.
Funeral services will be held at the Saint John's Lutheran Church, West Burlington, on Friday, February 21 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Lynn Ash and the Rev. William Rittberger officiating.

EDMESTON — Ruby May Montgomery of Edmeston died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at The Meadows in Middlefield.
She was born on May 13, 1911, in Centralia, Ill., the daughter of George A. Clapper and Ada (Johnson) Clapper.
She was married to Clyde Robert Goodier on Sept. 23, 1931. He died April 24, 1970. She then married Irving Montgomery on April 3, 1982. He died in March of 1989.
She was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Edmeston, and a former member of the Edmeston Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
She had been employed at the Kraft Foods Plant in South Edmeston for many years as well as working at several Edmeston area shops over the years.
Ruby will be remembered for her crocheting and her love of her family.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Colegrove and husband, John, of Edmeston; her grandchildren, John Colegrove Jr. of Hudson, Nadine Lasher and husband, Victor, of Garrattsville, Nanette Fikes and husband, Terry, of Burlington Flats, Isabelle Tophoven and husband, Timothy, of Edmeston, and Chad Goodier and wife, Lisa, of Hinesville, Ga. She was also blessed by her great-grandchildren, Cassandra and Matthew Fikes, Ashley and Denver Colegrove, Thomas and Sueellyn Tophoven, Nicholas and Michaela Lasher, and Hannah and Gavin Goodier.
She was predeceased by a son, Gary Goodier, who died May 24, 1986; a sister, Opal Hawkins; and three brothers, Everett, Harry and Laurel Clapper.

EDMESTON — Christy M. Schworm, 32, of Edmeston passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at her home with her family by her side.
She was born Feb. 16, 1970, in Wareham, Mass., the daughter of Doug and Joy (Jones) Beeching.
A resident of Edmeston from the age of 2 1/2, Christy was a graduate of Edmeston Central School and Milford BOCES Nursing School.
Christy married Robert A. Schworm on Oct. 9, 1993.
Christy was a member of the First Baptist Church, New Berlin.
She was employed at the Edmeston/Burlington Health Clinic in Edmeston.
Her great smile, gentle touch and warm personality greeted everyone at the clinic, and will be greatly missed.
Christy is survived by her husband, Bob; and her two daughters, Kaylee, 6, and Brianna, 3. Her mother, Joy Beeching of Edmeston; her father, Douglas Beeching and his wife, Helen, of San Benito, Texas; her sister, Connie McCarthy and her husband, Pat, of New Windsor; her brother, James R. Beeching and his wife, Theresa of Leonardsville; the entire Schworm family of Edmeston; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A private family service is being arranged by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home of Edmeston at Christy's request.
In lieu of flowers, Christy requested donations be made in her memory to the Edmeston Rotary Club, P.O. Box 223, Edmeston, NY 13335, making it possible for the Rotary to continue to help others in need as they deem necessary.

EDMESTON — Ruth E. Thompson, 77, of Edmeston died peacefully Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany with her family by her side.
She was born May 21, 1925, in Burlington, the daughter of Cass and Charlotte (Klock/Lytwynec) Sweet.
She outlived two husbands, Peter Pylinski of Edmeston, and Warren (Tony) Thompson of Gloversville.
Ruth retired as post master of the Burlington Flats Post Office on May 1, 1990.
She was also a 43-year member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Auxiliary Post 1311.
Ruth was a loving wife, parent, grandparent and friend, who found happiness with her family, friends, watching current events, and educational television as well as reading.
In her later years, she developed a love for Drew Carey and "Who's Line Is It Anyway?," which she enjoyed because they made her laugh and she loved to laugh.
She is survived by her brothers, Douglas Sweet of Richfield Springs, Wayne Sweet of Frankfurt, and Steve Lytwynec of California; her children, Jack Pylinski of Louisville, Ky., Kris Aparicio of Edmeston, Gretchen Belden of West Edmeston, Mark Pylinski of Honolulu, Hawaii, Toby Thompson of South New Berlin, Janelle Ross of Edmeston and their spouses; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held at Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, from 6 to 9 p.m. (with an American Legion Auxiliary service to be held at 7 p.m.) Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 1 p.m., with calling hours from 11 a.m. until the service.

Christine L. Fitch
EDMESTON — Christine L. Fitch, 83, of Burlington Flats, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
She was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Burlington Green, the daughter of William J. and Iva J. (Lake) Shillieto.
She married Lloyd C. Fitch on Nov. 11, 1938, in West Edmeston. He predeceased her on Feb. 8, 1997.
Christine retired from Edmeston Central School, where she taught for more than 35 years. She began her teaching career in the area's one-room schoolhouse. Christine had a passion for reading and for teaching; even in her later years she could still recite Hiawatha and Evangeline entirely.
One of her greatest loves was for her grandchildren, and she enjoyed searching through all the rummage sales to procure gifts for each of them.
Her garden was deep in color and produce.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Burlington Green, but also enjoyed attending the First Baptist Church in Burlington Flats.
Christine is survived by her children and their spouses, Andrea and Bill Gott of Edmeston, Leah and Roger Perkins of West Edmeston and Clifford and Patti Fitch of Burlington Flats. Her grandchildren, Cathleen and Dave Parmeter, Gary and Angela Gott, Richard and Carrie Gott, Joann and Glenn Cilbrith, Gerald and Noemi Perkins, James aud Prudy Perkins, David Perkins and Cheryl, Lisa Baulch, Michael Fitch, Amy Fitch and her fiance, Greg Dye; and great-grandchildren, William and Ethan Hitchcock, Garrett and Caitlyn Gott, Brandon, Justin, Kyle and Andrew Gott, Adam and Amanda Perkins, Jake and Hanah Baulch and Michael Price and Sara Cilbrith; her brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Helen Shillieto; her niece, Linda and family; two nephews, Mark, Gordon and family; numerous cousins and several close friends.
Christine was predeceased by her beloved nephew, David.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Henderson, pastor, officiating.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Burlington Flats Cemetery.
The family is setting up a fund in Christine's name through Edmeston Central School. The award will be based on the most improved reading skills in first grade.

EDMESTON — MaryAnn Sweet, 75, of Edmeston, died peacefully Thursday, June 28, 2001, at her home with her family by her side.
She was born Dec. 7, 1925, in New Haven, Conn., the daughter of Julius and Susie (Tchechickevich) Pylinski.
She married Robert L. Sweet Sr. on Aug. 8, 1952, in the South New Berlin Parsonage.
MaryAnn retired from Kraft Foods in Lowville, where she had been employed as a quality controller.
She was a member of the Church of the Nativity and served in their Alter Guild. MaryAnn was also a member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Auxiliary Post #1311 and held the position of Sergeant of Arms and organized the Poppy fund-raiser for many, many years.
MaryAnn enjoyed bowling, golfing and loved to watch stock car racing.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; her son, Richard W. Sweet; her step children and their spouses, Robert L. Sweet Jr. and Donna and James W. Sweet and Joann; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her brothers, Edward Pylinski and Albert (Bud) Pylinski; and her sisters, Helen Mockovciak and Janina Piazza.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph, Peter, Sylvester and Walter Pylinski; her sister, Genevieve Nestved; and her step sister, Julia Gramberg.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity in Edmeston, with Fr. John Burns officiating. Calling hours are Friday, June 29, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. and a Legion Auxiliary service will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday evening.

He was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Gilbertsville, the son of William H. and Marion (Borden) Sweet.
He married MaryAnn Pylinski in August 1952. She predeceased him on June 28, 2001.
Robert retired from Kraft Food in Lowville after 42 years; he had been employed in the maintenance department.
He was a member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Post No. 1311 and the VFW Post No. 6912 in Lowville.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946.
He is survived by his sons, Robert L. Sweet Jr. and his wife, Donna; James W. Sweet and his wife, Joanne; and Richard W. Sweet; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, William Sweet; and two sisters, Nellie Sweet and Mildred Ward.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Lorraine Zimmerman officiating. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today, with an American Legion service at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

MRS. LEON PASHLEY

Mrs. Leon Pashley passed away at Faxton Hospital Friday evening, December 13, as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident at Cassville earlier in the day.

Isabel Chase Pashley was born in the town of Plainfield, January 30, 1881, daughter of Frank and Amanda Chase. She was married to Leon Pashley November 16, 1904 and to them were born three daughters, Mrs. Henry Towsley of Munnsville, Mrs. Harry Payne of Edmeston, and Miss Gertrude Pashley who lived with her parents.

Most of her early life was spent in Burlington, at which place she was united with the Baptist church. About twelve years ago she with her family moved to Edmeston where they resided until her death.

Surviving relatives include the husband; two grandchildren Marjorie and Charles Towsley; one brother, Earl Chase of Garrattsville; two sisters, Elsie Chase and Mrs. William Bailey of Burlington; and a half sister, Mrs. Edward Jones of Burlington Flats.

The funeral was held from her late home Wednesday afternoon, December 18, at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. F. Weinhauer, former pastor of the Edmeston Baptist church, of which she was a member.

Burial was made in the Union cemetery at Edmeston.

MRS. LEON PASHLEY

KILLED BY TRUCK

Mrs. Leon Pashley of Edmeston, died Friday evening in Faxton Hospital, Utica, about four hours after she and Mr. Pashley were injured as their car and a truck collided near Cassville. The accident occurred about 4:20 as the auto driven by Mr. Pashley pulled out to pass one truck and skidded into the path of another. It is said Mr. Pashley lost control of his car when he applied brakes to get back into line.

The truck, owned by the Beech-Nut Packing Company and driven by Ernest Reamond of Utica, smashed into the side of the Pashley car and pushed it into a field on the east side of the highway, not far from the upper end of the over head crossing.

Mrs. Pashley suffered multiple lacerations, a fractured right hip, a fractured pelvis and considerable shock. Mr. Pashley was less seriously injured and it is expected he will recover.
