George W. Bedell

Morris, March 18---George W. Bedell, son of Hiram W. and Sarah (McIntyre) Bedell, died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Perry, of East Orange, N. J., with whom he had made his home for about six years, Thursday at 4 a. m., after a long period of declining health.

George Washington Bedell was born February 16, 1856, in Brooklyn, where he spent his early boyhood. When about 15 years of age, he came to the country and joined his brother in the town of Butternuts. October 20, 1880, he married Miss Mary Arries of Morris. To them was born one child, Mrs. Robert Perry of East Orange, N. J. Mr. and Mrs. Bedell operated several farms during their early married life. Later they moved into Morris village and Mr. Bedell became sexton of Zion Episcopal church, serving in that capacity faithfully for about 37 years.

After the death of Mrs. Bedell, June 14, 1929, he went to East Orange to reside.

Mr. Bedell was greatly esteemed by a wide circle of friends.

Immediate surviving relatives are the daughter; one brother, John B. Bedell of Rosendale; and two cousins, Miss Sarah Bedell and Miss Florence Bedell of Brooklyn, to all of whom sincere sympathy will be extended.

Funeral services were held in East Orange. Committal services, conducted by Rev. L. Curtis Denney, rector of Zion Episcopal church, of which the deceased had long been a member, were held at the family plot in Hillington cemetery, Morris, Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

Relatives and friends outside of Morris who attended these services were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Perry, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Scheff and Mrs. Lester Bedell of East Orange, N. J., Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Augur of Cooperstown; Mr. and Mr.s Charles Martindale of Oneonta; Mr. and Mrs. Alba Ainsworth of Gilbertsville.

Dies at Family Residence

Hartwick, May 8---Mrs. Ida T. Burch, 77, beloved wife of Orlo S. Burch, passed away Sunday afternoon at her home in Main street. Death was caused by complication of diseases.

Mrs. Burch was born February 23, 1855, in Laporte, Ind., the daughter of James and Lany (Pierce) Allison. She came to Hartwick when eight years of age and has since resided in this village. She was married to Orlo Burch January 30, 1878. Mr. and Mrs. Burch celebrated their golden wedding anniversary January 30 1928. She was a member of the Hartwick Methodist Episcopal church and acted as Sunday school superintendent for several years. She was a devoted Christian and a woman highly respected in this community.

Surviving besides her husband are one son, A. Monroe Burch, and one grandson, Orlo Burch, Hartwick; two cousins, Mrs. Fannie Baker, Syracuse, and Mrs. Hortense Maynard, Cooperstown. Her only daughter, Mrs. J. D. McAllister, passed away last November.

Funeral services will be held from the family home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. George A. Roberts, pastor of the Hartwick Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate. Interment will be in the family plot of the Hartwick cemetery.

Double Funeral Held for Camps

Hundreds Attend Last Rites for Prominent Couple

Victims of Georgia Auto Crash

Double funeral services for the late Mr. and Mrs. Seymour G. Camp of 19 Grand Street, victims of an automobile accident in Georgia, were held from the home Saturday afternoon. The residence was filled to capacity and a large group gathered outside.

Dr. E. J. Farley, pastor emeritus of the First Baptist church, officiated at the joint services, in which the Oneonta Elks lodge assisted with its ritual. The bodies were placed in the Plains cemetery vault for interment in the spring.

Bearers for both were Charles D. Townsend, A. J. Dewar, M. G. Keenan, Daniel Krothe, Daniel Franklin, Sr., and Harry Butts, all close friends of the prominent couple.

Hundreds of floral tributes attested to the esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Camp were hled. Among the groups sending flowers were Keenan's, Bob and Dan's restaurant, Oneonta Credit bureau, Oneonta lodge of Elks, Horton's of Albany and a group of eight tenants.

Included among those from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. George Wright and son of New York city and Daytona Beach, Fla., the former a sister of Mr. Camp; Mrs. Charles Stenson, a sister of Mr. Camp, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Morris of Gilbertsville; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Stenson of Binghamton, the former a nephew of Mr. Camp; Edgar Rowe and Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Cose, a niec of Mrs. Camp, and son of Sidney; Clyde Rifenbark of Schenectady, a nephew of Mrs. Camp; Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Angell of Mt. Upton, the latter a niece of Mrs. Camp; Loren Rifenbark of Sidney Center and Eric Rifenbark of Binghamton, brothers of Mrs. Camp.

Mrs. Camp was instantly killed a week ago today, and Mr. Camp followed her in death a few days later as the result of injuries which they received when their car was struck by another near Swainsboro, Ga.

Addendum: In checking the 1930 via Ancestry.com, Mrs. Camp's name was Edna E. (Rifenbark) and her mother was with them on the 1920 census. Mary R. Rifenbark was 78. Mr. Camp's birth date is listed as Nov. 1863 and I estimate hers as 1879 from the census ages. His occupation was listed as auto dealer.

Funeral Services Friday at Late Residence

Mrs. Altie Card, wife of Edwin Card of Lena, died at her home this Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock after about a week's illness of pneumonia. The funeral services will be held on Friday from her late home at 2 p.m., her pastor, Rev. C. J. Hurlbutt of the Mt. Vision Baptist church, officiating, and burial will be in the family plot in the Lena cemetery.

Mrs. Card, who was a daughter of Andrew Salisbury, was born in Milford township October 7, 1872, and was married 40 years ago to Edwin Card, who survives her. She leaves also seven children: Mrs. John Herrington of Sagaponack, this state, Raymond Card of Morris, Rena Card and Mrs. Viggo Larsen of Mt. Vision, Steward, Harry and Vivian Card, residing at home. She was one of a family of seven children of whom four, Andrew and Cleveland Salisbury of Mr. Vision, Mrs. Cora Morse of New Lisbon and Miss Anna Salisbury of Cooperstown, survive. She leaves also nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Card was a woman well known and much beloved in the community where her whole life was spent and she will be greatly missed by a multitude of friends. She had been a member of the Mt. Vision Baptist church for over 40 years, and was also a member of the Home Bureau of Lena.

Card Funeral Services Are Largely Attended

Mt. Vision, Nov. 18---Funeral services for Mrs. Edwin Card were held from the late home at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. C. J. Hurlbutt, her pastor, officiated. The bearers were Thurlow Sargent, Earl Briggs, Carleton Peet, and Andrew Harrington.

Two songs were given by Carl Cleveland, Irwin McIntyre and Clyde Hurlbutt, “I Am Thine O Lord,” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus,” favorites of the deceased. Relatives from out of town who attended the services came from Fly Creek, Cooperstown, Cedarville, Milford, Oneonta, New Lisbon, Hartwick, Index and Sidney. Among the many floral offerings were those from Mt. Vision Baptist church, Lena Home bureau, Morris Central school, Elmore Milling company, school district 11 and many others.

HANNAH MELISSA CHASE

Mrs. Hannah M. Chase died Sunday, December 9, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Porter after an illness of several months due to the infirmities of old age. Had Mrs. Chase lived until January 9 she would have celebrated her 99^th birthday anniversary and is believed to have been the oldest inhabitant of the town of Edmeston. Born in Pittsfield on January 9, 1836 the daughter of Stephen and Elsie Card her entire life was spent in the vicinity of Pittsfield and Garrattsville. In 1866 she was united in marriage with Adelbert Chase and has since resided in Edmeston. Mr. Chase died about five years ago. Up until the past few months Mrs. Chase took a great deal of comfort in reading and her mind was remarkably clear. She could recall incidents in her early life and delighted in telling tales of the civil war days and of the time she journeyed to Utica when a young girl and heard president Lincoln give a campaign speech. Her entire life was one of devotion to her family and home.

Surviving are five children; Mrs. Dora Porter, Mrs. Luella Truesdell and Fred Chase of Edmeston, Mrs. Jennie Babcock and Clayton D. Chase of Pittsfield; five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Porter with whom she had lived for the past six years and who tenderly cared for her in her declining health. Rev. L. A. Weed officiated and interment was made in Union Cemetery.

Well Known Resident Succumbs in Sleep From Heart Disease

New Lisbon, Nov. 4---George Alexander Coffyn, a well known resident of this village, died between midnight Friday and 5 o'clock Saturday morning of heart trouble. He had been ill for some time. He retired Friday night feeling as usual, but when Mrs. Coffyn called him at 5 o'clock the next morning, she found him dead. Dr. B. F. Bishop of Garrattsville, coroner, gave a verdict of death by natural causes.

Born in Chester, Vt., July 21, 1873 a son of George M. and Adelle (Young) Coffyn, he came to New Lisbon about 40 years ago. He conducted a general store here for some time, then sold out and went to St. Louis, Mo. He returned about 26 years ago when he married the former Mrs. James Briggs Weatherly, who died in 1918. Later he married the former Alice Colburn Garrett.

A man of sterling character and quiet nature, he leaves a host of friends who will sincerely mourn his passing.

Surviving are his wife, one son, Edward, 14; a step-daughter, Mrs. Harold Row of New Berlin; one brother, Edward Coffyn of Dover, Pa.; two aunts, Mrs. Jessie Hathaway of Albany, and Miss Mary Young of New Lisbon; one uncle, Charles Young of New Lisbon; and several cousins, including Lynn Hathaway of Oneonta.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon from the home. Rev. L. Curtis Denny, pastor of the Morris Episcopal church, will officiate, and interment will be in Hillington cemetery, Morris.

Robert W. Dyckman Dies

After Illness of Over Year

Morris, Dec. 22---Robert W. Dyckman, proprietor of the Morris inn for the past eight years, died at his home on Main street early Thursday morning from the effects of a shock, which he suffered last week. He had been an invalid for over a year.

Robert Willard Dyckman, one of the nine children of Law and Janette (Nichols) Dyckman, was born December 19, 1886, in North Harpersfield, where he spent his boyhood.

As a young man he became interested in the management of restaurants and during his life successfully conducted several in Ballston Spa, Oneonta and Sidney, before purchasing the Morris inn.

Mr. Dyckman was united in marriage March 27, 1921, with Miss Hazel Mead of Gilbertsville, who survives him and who has faithfully cared for him during his long illness. To them was born one son, Robert, Jr., now 12 years of age.

The deceased was a member of the Jefferson Masonic lodge, of Leila chapter,

O. E. S., in Jefferson, and also of the Elks lodge in Norwich. He was a genial man and with a markedly keen sense of humor. He made many friends, among whom he will be greatly missed.

Immediate surviving relatives are the widow and son; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Bassage of Rochester and Mrs. Elnora Simmons of Oneonta; also several nephews and nieces, to whom much sympathy will be extended

The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Dr. C. E. Vermilya of the Methodist church, were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was in the new part of Hillington cemetery.

Addendum:  I estimate his year of death as 1935 since his son was born in 1923 and he was 12 when his father died.
