Construction of 12.5 miles of highway between Oneonta and Morris is one of the projects planned this year in the Binghamton district of the state department of Public Works, which includes Otsego and other nearby counties.

The complete program for the Binghamton district this year calls for construction of 33.72 miles of highway and 17 bridges at an estimated cost of $1,907,000.

F. W. Donovan, district engineer, who made the announcement, state that the appropriations do not include any projects that will be undertaken if the $4,880,000 federal public works appropriation is voted by Congress.

Construction of a new highway between this city and Morris has been under discussion for several years. “There is every good reason to believe that the work will start this year because of the fact that it has been listed as number one project by the State department,” James H. Thomas, resident state engineer stated yesterday.

While the estimated cost of the proposed road was not revealed by Mr. Donovan, estimates made last year placed the figure between $300,000 to $400,000. Condemnation proceedings were instituted in 1934 to secure the right of way for construction of the new road, which will be a 20-foot concrete highway with five-foot shoulders on each side. Many of the curves in the present route will be eliminated under the new plan.

According to the program announced by Mr. Donovan, four bridges will be erected between Otego and Wilsey Corners and one between Schenevus and Westford. A new bridge between Route 7 and the village of Sidney is also planned

“Plans for all of these projects are practically complete and rights of way have been obtained for most of the jobs, Mr. Donovan said “As a result it is expected that contracts for the projects can be awarded early this year.”

Seven county highway projects, estimated to cost $306,000, will be built this year. Work will be under the direction of Victor L. Hoke, county superintendent of Highways.

The projects and the estimated costs are as follows: Gilbertsville---Maple Grove, 4.2 miles, $76,5000; Willowville school--Myrick school, Briar Creek road, 6 miles, $35,000; Burlington--Schuyler Lake, 3.1 miles, $46,000; Fly Creek—Allen's lake, 3 miles, $45,000; Pittsfield—Garrattsville, 1.7 miles, $25,500; Decatur---Butlers Corners and Decatur—East Worcester, 3.2 miles, $48,000; Westford—Middlefield, 2 miles, $30,000.

William B. Allen

Morris, Jan. 22---Willaim B. Allen, one of the most respected citizens of Morris, who had been spending the winter with friends in Melbourne, Fla., passed away at the Melbourne hospital Thursday night at 7:45 from the effects of an illness of many weeks' duration.

Mr. Allen, youngest child of Benjamin and Olive (Braddock) Allen, was born February 3, 1852, in New Lisbon, near Myers' Mills. When but a year old his parents purchased the farm above the upper Dimmock Hollow school in Morris, which was afterwards the Allen homestead for 72 years. Early in life he became associated with his father on the farm and he continued to operate it until failing health finally made it necessary for him to dispose of it. He also dealt extensively in lumber and conducted a saw mill on his farm, employing quite a force of men.

On May 20, 1872, Mr. Allen married Miss Melissa D. White of Smithville Flats, who died in 1912. To them were born four daughters: Mrs. Andrew Baulf, whose death occurred in 1906; Mrs. Leon Wells of South New Berlin; Mrs. Levern Lull and Mrs. Harold Sargent of Morris.

Mr. Allen sold his farm in 1925 and came to Morris village to live with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Levern Lull, of East Main street. He was a great lover of the out-of-doors and spent many hours during the warm weather fishing.

Early last December, he went to Melbourne, Fla., to spend the winter with Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Fischesser. Becoming very ill, he entered the Melbourne hospital the day after Christmas. His daughter, Mrs. Levern Lull, was with him during the last week of his sickness.

Mr. Allen was a genial man, beloved not only by his own family, but by a host of friends. “Uncle Bill,” as he was familiarly known, was always welcomed by old and young and many are there who will mourn his passing.

Immediate surviving relatives are the three daughters, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild, one great, great grandchild, also one niece, Mrs. Merton R. Poter, of Schenectady, to all of whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. F. G. Leonard of the Universalist church, were held at his late home this afternoon at 1:30. Interment was in the family plot on the hill in the old part of Hillington cemetery.

Hobart E. Bennington

Hobart E. Bennington, 50 years old of South Hartwick, passed away on Monday afternoon at the Fox Memorial hospital suffering from peritonitis.

Mr. Bennington was born in New Lisbon, December 23, 1884, the oldest son of Edwin and Rose (Mauyer) Bennington. He was married to Florence Colburn, December 20, 1911. Mrs. Bennington survives as do two children, Arthur and Marion, who reside at home, his mother, Mrs. Rose Bennington, who lives at Garrattsville, and four brothers, Robert of Edmeston, William of Garrattsville, Fred of Scotia and Sumner of Norwich.

Mr. Bennington was a highly respected farmer of South Hartwick, where he had lived for 20 years. He was also a member of the Mt. Vision Baptist church and took an active part in all church and Sunday school work. He was one of the deacons of the church, of which he was a member and was superintendent of the Sunday school for several years. He was also district superintendent of the Sunday School association of the Otego Valley for several years.

Funeral services were held from the Mt. Vision Baptist Church Wednesday and burial made at Morris.

Hartwick, July 21---The funeral of Hobart E. Bennington was held in the Mt. Vision Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. His pastor, Rev. Clyde J. Hulburt, conducted the service, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. George F. Adams of the Hartwick Baptist church. Mrs. George Feldmal and Erwin McIntyre sang “When I Get to the End of the Day.” Many floral tributes showed the high esteem in which Mr. Bennington was held.

Flowers were sent by the Mt. Vision Baptist church, Garrattsville Methodist Episcopal church, Otego Valley Sunday School association, Otego Valley Grange, the class of 1931 of Hartwick High school, of which his son was a member, Hartwick college, neighbors, friends and the family.

The bearers were Adrian Mather, Gilbert Marlette, Erwin McIntyre, Carl Cleveland, Glenn Tilley and Frank Miller. Burial was made in the Morris cemetery.

Friends attending the funeral from away were from Scotia, Norwich, Edmeston, Garrattsville, Burlington, Morris, Oneonta, Schenectady, Milford, Hartwick and Laurens.

Cooperstown, May 15---Dr. Charles Wesley Lanning and Miss Lillian Paddock, both of this village, were quietly married this morning in the Presbyterian manse on Church street. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Edward C. Petrie, D. D. , pastor of the Presbyterian church. The witnesses were the Misses Phylliss A. and Betty Lanning, daughterS of Dr. Lanning.

Following the service, Dr. and Mrs. Lanning left for a fortnight's wedding trip in the south, which will include also a visit to Washington, D. C. On their return they will reside in the Lanning home on Upper Main street.

Dr. Lanning has been a practicing physician in this village since 1912, and for the past several years has been associated with the staff of the Bassett hospital here as eye, ear and throat specialist. Mrs. Lanning is the daughter of Mrs. Lillian Meacham Shortsleeves, formerly of Columbus, O. For the past three years she has been associated with the Bassett hospital staff as dietitian. Both will have the good wishes of a wide circle of friends.

New Lisbon Passes Away

New Lisbon, May 22---Mrs. Herman Lasher died suddenly about 10 o'clock last night from the effects of a shock which she suffered earlier in the evening. She had been in her usual health and was mowing the lawn when stricken. She died without regaining consciousness.

Charlotte Waller was born in England November 12, 1880. She came to this country when a young girl and located in New York. She married J. Morton there. The family resided in New York for a number of years. Twelve years ago she married Mr. Lasher of Burlington.

Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Frances Wallace of Jersey City; and one son, Douglas Morton of Fulton. Both are children of the first marriage.

The funeral will be held at the family home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Rev. L. C. Denney, rector of the Episcopal church at Morris, will officiate. Interment will be in Burlington.

HOME IN EDMESTON

The death of Andrew S. Myers occurred at his home on South Street, Edmeston, Saturday, April 25. Mr. Myers had been in failing health for several months and about three weeks ago he suffered a shock which was followed by pneumonia from which he succumbed. Andrew Myers was born in South New Berlin, September 18, 1861, the son of Orson Myers and Eliza Smith. His childhood was spent in the vicinity of New Lisbon where he attended the local school. For many years he conducted Myers Mill at New Lisbon and in this business he came into contact with a wide circle of people among whom he made many friends. Mr. Myers was devoted to his home and family and took a deep interest in hunting and fishing. He had been a member of Tianderah Masonic Lodge of Morris for 50 years and was also a member of the Morris Methodist Episcopal church. About six years ago, after the death of his wife, Mr. Myers came to Edmeston to make his home, and during this time he has made many friends. The funeral was held from his late home Tuesday afternoon at 2 oclock, the Rev. Denney, pastor of the Morris Episcopal church officiating and burial was made in Union Cemetery at Edmeston. The service at the grave was conducted by members of Tianderah Masonic Lodge of Morris with an escort of Masons from Edmeston Masonic Lodge. Friends and relatives were present from Syracuse, Cooperstown, Oneonta, Unadilla, Morris, New Lisbon, Norwich, South New Berlin, New Berlin, Utica, Albany, Garrattsville, Fly Creek and Binghamton. Much Sympathy is held for the surviving daughter, Ida Myers Dunbar and the following brother and sister, George Myers of Garrattsville, Mrs. Mary Turner of New Lisbon and several nieces and nephews.

The year of his death is an estimate using a 200 year Calendar. The 25^th of April falls on Saturday in 1925, 1931, and 1942.

Funeral This Afternoon

New Lisbon, July 21. --- After four and one-half years of intense suffering Julia E. Pope, wife of Andrew S. Myers, owner of Myers Mills, passed peacefully away at the family home Friday at 1:20 p.m. Through her long illness she had borne her sufferings without a murmur, and with patience that is seldom excelled.

The deceased was born in the town of Edmeston January 1, 1867, a daughter of Seth and Julia (Hawkins) Pope, her early life being passed at that place and Leonardsville. She was educated in the Edmeston High school and taught in district schools for a number of years previous to her marriage to Andrew S. Myers of New Lisbon, March 21, 1887. They began housekeeping and always lived at Myers Mills, where for many years her husband has owned and run the grist mill, she very capably assisting him as long as her health permitted.

She was of a quiet disposition and highly esteemed, a dear wife and mother, kind and considerate to all. Her death not only brings deep sorrow to her family but to a wide circle of friends.

Surviving besides her husband is an adopted daughter, Mrs. Harry Dunbar of Butts Corners; one brother, Daniel Pope of Edmeston; four nieces and two nephews and several cousins.

The funeral will be held at her late home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. E. E. Hutchinson of Morris will officiate and interment will be in Union cemetery at Edmeston.
