H. L. Baker Dies at 69

NORWICH, ---Howard LeRoy Baker, 69, former Ontario and Western Railroad engineer, died Saturday at his home, 29 Fair st., following confinement at home during the last three weeks. He had been in failing health since last March when he was forced to retire.

Baker was born in Oxford, son of Joseph E. and Anne Wheeler Baker. On

Oct. 5, 1904 he was married to Elizabeth King at their present residence on Fair st.

He leaves his widow; one sister, two nieces, Mrs. George Sleeper and Miss Grace Colton, Sherburne; one nephew, J. Clifford Baker, Sherburne.

The body will lie at rest at the family home from 10 A.M. Sunday morning till 3 P.M. Monday at which time the body will be removed to the Robert J. Fahy Funeral Home. Services will be held Tuesday at 2 P.M. The Rev. Thomas Swales officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Mt. Home Cemetery.

Using Ancestry.com for research, on the 1910 census, Howard was 31 years old.

No where on the census reports through the years were any children listed. As far back as 1910, Howard was listed as a railroad engineer and also on the 1940 census, he was listed as a steam railroad engineer.

According to his headstone on Find a Grave, his birth year was 1878 and he died March 8, 1947.

LINN WILSON SLATER

Linn Wilson Slater, 78, 38 Cortland Street died at his home at 5:15 this morning.

Mr. Slater was born October 18, 1876, in Preston, the son of Porter A. and Ellen Clarke Slater. He was married to Edna H. Scribner November 12, 1911, in Scranton, Pa. Of this union there survive a daughter, Mrs. Donald Burr of this city.

Mr. Slater had made his home with his family in this city for the past 12 years. Prior to moving to Norwich he had engaged in farming at both Preston and at Mead's Pond. He operated a dairy farm at Mead's Pond for the last 20 years before his retirement in May of 1942.

Mr. Slater was a member of the First Congregational Church and of the Churchmen's Fellowship of that church.

Besides the wife and daughter he is survived by a son and a daughter by a previous marriage, Carlton A. Slater of Oxford and Mrs. Phillip Ball of Norwich.

Six grandchildren, an aunt, several cousins also survive.

The body is at the residence from where funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, the Rev.Avery D. Post, pastor of the First Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at the residence tonight from 7 to 9 and tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Arrangements are by the Robert J. Fahy Funeral Home.

Another Daughter in Norwich Family Seriously Ill in Hospital----Mother Was Born in Morris

Norwich, Feb. 1.---Mrs. Mary A (Thurston) Duroe, widow of C. R. Duroe, died at her home, 89 North Broad street, this city shortly after 4 o'clock this afternoon, following a two weeks illness of lobar pneumonia. A daughter, Miss Jane Duroe, a teacher in the Norwich public schools, died of the same disease at 9:30 o'clock last night. Another daughter, Miss Eliza Duroe, who for some time has conducted a beauty parlor at the family home was removed yesterday afternoon to the Norwich Memorial hospital, also stricken with pneumonia.

The mother, who passed her 80^th birthday anniversary a few months ago, was born near Morris. After her marriage to Mr. Duroe, the family moved to a farm in Norwich Quarter, on the South New Berlin road, where Mr. Duroe became one of the leading farmers of that section and the home was widely known for its hospitality. The family was active in the Norwich Congregational church.

Twenty years ago they moved to a larger farm on Great Brook in the town of New Berlin where Mr. Duroe died 10 years ago. Three years ago the remaining members of the family returned to Norwich and bought the home on North Broad street.

Besides the daughter ill in the hospital, another daughter, Miss Ruth H. Duroe, resides at home; a son, Vernon Duroe, is a teacher in Brooklyn; and Francis Duroe is a farmer near Morris. A double funeral service will probably be held Friday afternoon.

Both Jane and Mary Ann are buried at Norwich Quarter Cemetery on Rt. 23 east of Norwich at the corner of Wells Rd.
and Rt. 23.  Rodney Collingwood Dure, Mary Ann's husband is also buried there along with others in the family.  There are Find A Grave memorials for them at Norwich Quarter Cemetery, Chenango County, NY.

Norwich---Will of the estate of Vernon E. Duroe, late of Norwich, has been admitted to probate by Chenango County Surrogate Lynn H. Peterson.

Letters testamentary were issued to a daughter, Katharine S. Duroe of 89 North Broad Street, who is the executrix.

According to the petition for letters, the estate is valued at not more than $40,000 in personal property.

It is willed entirely to the daughter.

Her attorney is Donald S. Whitney of Norwich.
