Leach, Beatrice (Van Warner) 1907-2003 New Berlin NY Obituary

Beatrice Leach

NEW BERLIN — Beatrice Ione Leach of New Berlin passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at the home of her nephew and his wife, Rex and Faith Yurenka of Burlington, where she had resided for the last eight months.
She was born on May 3, 1907 in Norwich, oldest daughter of Adolph and Elizabeth Van Warner.
She attended school in Cardtown and Ketchum, rural schools in the Town of Pittsfield and graduated from New Berlin High School in 1926.
She attended Oneonta State Normal school and taught in Ketchum for nine years.
She moved to Greene in 1938 and taught at the Chenango Forks Central School for five years.
In 1942, during the war, she worked at Benedix Aviation in Sidney for three years.
After the war she returned to Oneonta State Teacher's College and received her bachelor's degree in education.
She married Richard Leach in 1946 and they moved to Poughkeepsie where she taught in the Wappingers Central School and became treasurer of the Faculty Association.
She attended Vassar College where she studied the Russian Language.
She was a member of the Methodist Church and Business and Professional Women and Senior Citizens group while living in Poughkeepsie.
She retired from teaching in 1970 after being in the profession for over thirty-five years.
She and her husband returned to her family home on East River Road in New Berlin.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1973.
She spent her winters in Florida where she joined the Auxiliary of the Manatea Memorial Hospital and she was a member of the Bradanton Shuffle Board Club.
After selling her family home in 1993, Beatrice resided at 28 Academy Street in New Berlin and became a member of the 60 Plus Club, the Senior Citizens Club, and the First United Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Betty Watson of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Beverly Corcorin of Pittsburg, KA; a step-daughter Anita Cluff; two step-grandsons, Steve and Bill; and a step-granddaughter, Barbra, all of Brisben.
A memorial service will be held at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin on Sunday, February 23 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. John Young, minister of the Baptist Church in Burlington Flats, officiating.
Donations in her memory may be made to the New Berlin Library.

Eccleston, Kenneth B. 1907-1999 New Berlin NY Obituary

NEW BERLIN — Kenneth Bruce Eccleston, 91, of New Berlin and formerly of Morris, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.
He was born in Binghamton on Nov. 21, 1907, the son of George and Frances (Conklin) Eccleston.
He married Ruth Turner on April 29, 1927, in Atlantic City, N.J. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary together.
He had worked for the Raymond Corporation for 17 years, and prior to that had worked for Jim Menitt Trucking, The Linn Tractor Co., and at one time had worked for the town of Morris Highway Department.
They had lived in New Berlin since 1985, and had formerly resided on Hargrave Street in Morris.
He attended the United Methodist Church in Morris.
Ken is survived by his wife, Ruth of New Berlin; a son, Carl Eccleston and his wife, Bernice, of New Berlin; a brother, Harold Eccleston of Chenango Bridge; a sister, Blanche Barbour of Atlantic City, N.J.; grandchildren, Carlette and Larry Brownell of Amsterdam and Sharel Eccleston of Kenosha, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Tanya, Melinda and Alicia Brownell; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy, Vivian and Ester Eccleston; several stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Leon, Leslie, Paul and Phillip Eccleston.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Joseph Fiske officiating. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the Morris United Methodist Church or the New Berlin Emergency Squad in his memory.
Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

NEW BERLIN — Ruth Corrine Eccleston, 92, of New Berlin, and formerly of Morris, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.
She was born in Morris on Dec. 15, 1908, the daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Gardner) Turner.
She married Kenneth Eccleston on April 29, 1927, in Atlantic City, N.J. He died Feb. 10, 1999.
She had been employed by the H.W. Naylor Co. in Morris for more than 22 years.
She and her husband had resided in New Berlin, since 1985, and before that they were lifelong Morris residents.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Morris.
She was well-known for her knitting of mittens and then giving them to all the children in the area and also her pride in feeding and helping people in need.
Ruth is survived by her son, Carl Eccleston and his wife, Bernice, of New Berlin; two granddaughters, Carlette Brownell and her husband, Larry, of Amsterdam and Shari Eccleston of Wisconsin; three stepgranddaughters, Ann Downey and her husband, Dennis, of Norwich, Alice Church of Sherburne and Patricia James of New Berlin; one stepgrandson, David James of Morris; three nephews, Paul Knickerbocker and his wife, Helen, of Pittsfield, Milton Knickerbocker and his wife, Dorthia, of Morris and Charles Turner and his wife, Florence, of South Edmeston; along with 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Three sisters, Clara Carpenter, Emma Stebbins and Louise Knickerbocker; and two brothers, Fred and Harry Turner; predeceased her.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske officiating. Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Those who wish may donate to the United Methodist Church of Morris or the Morris or New Berlin Emergency Squads in her memory.

Horey, Betty 1948-2002 New Berlin NY Obituary

Betty Horey

NEW BERLIN — Betty Horey, beloved wife of Brian and mother to Jason, Carol and Marissa, died suddenly in her sleep Wednesday morning, Jan. 2, 2002.
She was born Feb. 19, 1948, in Manchester, N.H., and grew up in Oneonta.
A 1966 graduate of Oneonta High School, Betty earned bachelor and master of science degrees in physics education from the State University College at Oneonta.
She and Brian were married on Sept. 30, 1972, and resided at 3 High St. in New Berlin.
She was employed as a mathematics teacher in the former Gilbertsville Central School District and then in the computer department of Preferred Mutual Insurance Co. in New Berlin before devoting her life's work to raising three children. Betty most recently was employed at the J.C. Penney Store in Oneonta.
She was instrumental in forming the Parent-Teachers Organization at the New Berlin Elementary School and worked with several school activities and community organizations including the Community Readers Program, the Band Parents Association, the Drama Club and most recently the Unadilla Valley Winter Guard.
Betty is survived by her husband; and children; and one brother, Richard Barley of Georgetown.
She was predeceased by her mother, Zella Barley, of Oneonta, who died in 1998.
Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin. Calling hours for family and friends are scheduled for 2 until 4 p.m. and 7 until 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2002. A funeral service will be held Saturday morning at 10 also at the funeral home.
The family asks that donations in lieu of flowers, be made to the "Eden Alternative Fund" care of Phyllus Furgison at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, One Terrace Heights, New Berlin, NY, or to the New Berlin Emergency Squad.

Tiffany, Rose (Belden) 1927-2002 New Berlin NY Obituary

NEW BERLIN — Rose B. Tiffany, 75 , of New Berlin passed away Saturday, March 16, 2002, in New Berlin.
She was born Jan. 18, 1927, in the town of Butternuts, the daughter of Orrin and Mildred (Tripp) Belden.
She married Donald Tiffany on May 17, 1945. He predeceased her July 2, 1990.
She spent her childhood in the Gilbertsville area.
She attended Gilbertsville High School and was very proud to receive her GED in 1970. She later attended BOCES and became a licensed practical nurse.
She was employed by Kraft Foods for 35 years, then worked as an LPN at the Oxford Veteran's Home and for the past five years as a counselor at Pathfinder Village.
She volunteered at the New Berlin Library, helped with election polls and was involved with a seniors group.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge and the Butternuts Grange. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in South New Berlin.
Traveling was Rose's greatest joy, whether by bus, car, plane or boat; her favorite trip being to Alaska.
She leaves behind many friends and family as she makes her final journey to be with her Lord.
She regrets that she will be unable to return to her work at Pathfinder Village and the people she loved there.
She wishes to thank all who have helped her at the Faxton Cancer Center, New Berlin Health Center and Hospice.
She is survived by her four children, April Tiffany of Utica, Bruce Tiffany of South New Berlin, Carl Tiffany of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ed Tiffany of Utica; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Belden of Rome.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in South New Berlin with the Rev. Kurt Funke of the First Baptist Church in South New Berlin officiating.
Interment will be in the Butternuts Cemetery in the town of Gilbertsville.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial donations may be made to Pathfinder Village, Edmeston, NY, or the New Berlin Library, New Berlin, NY, 13411.

Weller, Alice (Daniels) 1908-2002 New Berlin NY Obituary

NEW BERLIN — Alice Daniels Barber Weller, 93, of New Berlin, and formerly of Deltona, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Wayne Aldrich.
She was born April 22, 1908, in Butternuts, the daughter of Frank and Elma (Culver) Daniels.
She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters; and one son, Howard L. Barber.
She married William L. Barber, who died in 1970.
She is survived by three children, Albert Barber and wife, Marian, of Walton, Dora M. Carr of Galway, and Florence Aldrich and husband, Wayne, of New Berlin.
She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She married John Weller, who predeceased her in 1992.
Alice attended a one-room schoolhouse until eighth grade. She graduated from Gilbertsville Central School and Oneonta Normal School. In high school and normal school, she played basketball and softball.
At age 7, she learned to drive a team of horses, and raked hay for her father and her grandfather during the summers.
Alice lived in Mount Vision for many years, and worked at the Oneonta Dress Factory.
In 1970, she relocated to Florida, and worked making custom drapes until retiring at age 74. After retiring, she enjoyed going to plays, competing in outdoor shuffleboard leagues, a bowling league and playing cards with her friends. She continued this until reaching the age of 90.
She was a very talented seamstress, who also enjoyed crocheting and gardening. Alice was an avid reader right up to the time of her death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815 in loving memory of Alice D. Weller.
A memorial service will be held at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Kurt Funke, pastor of the South New Berlin Baptist Church, officiating. The family will be in attendance at 1 p.m. to greet friends.
Burial will take place at the Hillington Cemetery, Morris, at a later date.
Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

NEW BERLIN — Elsie Louise Coffyn, 77, died Friday, June 4, 1999, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 23, 1921, in New Lisbon, the daughter of Albert D. Joy and Clara L. Martin Joy.
She married Harold W. Card. He died in 1979.
She spent her childhood in New Lisbon. She worked at Simmons/GLA in Norwich for many years. Since retirement she has been a senior companion at Broome Developmental Disabilities Service Office in New Berlin.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Elsie is survived by her son, Gary Coffyn of New Berlin; daughters, Dorothy Coffyn of Syracuse, Betty (Joseph) Masotto of Auburn and Diane (Stephen) Riddell of Henderson Harbor; sisters, Emma Halter of Jacksonville, Fla. and Melissa (Raymond) Lester of Oneonta; sister-in-law, Lois Joy of New Berlin; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin today at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Beverly Butler, pastor of the United Methodist Church in New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be at the All Saints Memorial Chapel in Morris.
Calling hours were held at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin on Sunday, June 6, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Sutton, Mary L. (Wood) 1936-2006 New Berlin NY Obituary

NEW BERLIN — Mary L. Sutton, 69, of New Berlin passed away Jan. 26, 2006, at her home in New Berlin, surrounded by her family.
Mary was born June 21, 1936, in New Berlin, the daughter of Floyd C. and Katherine (Moore) Wood.
She married Edwin "Roy" Sutton on Oct. 2, 1958, in Montrose, Pa. He predeceased her April 20, 1998.
Mary spent her childhood in Pittsfield. She graduated from New Berlin Central School in the class of 1954, and from Broome Community College in 1956.
Mary worked at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Chenango Memorial Hospital and spent 38 years with Procter & Gamble of Norwich, before retiring in 1997.
She was a member of the Quarter Century Club of Procter & Gamble; a 50-plus-year member of the New Berlin Women’s Bowling Association and the Susquenango Women’s Bowling Association; the New York State 600 Club; and the National 600 Bowling Club. She was inducted into the Susquenango Bowling Hall of Fame in 2003. She was also a member of the New Berlin American Legion Auxiliary, the Riverbend Golf Club and was an honorary member of the New Berlin Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Mary is survived by her three daughters, Katherine and James Schmitt, Edmeston, Sharon and Martin Miles, Mount Upton, and Debbie and Kris Tilbe, Edmeston; her grandchildren, Amy and Brad Smith, Edmeston, Traci Schmitt, North Adams, Mass., Shelly Miles, Mount Upton, Courtney and Adam Tilbe, Edmeston; her brother, Richard and Cindy Wood, Hartford, Ky.; her brother-in-law, Carl and Sue Sutton, New Berlin; her sister-in-law, Edith Sutton, Rome; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her beloved dog, Shep.
She was predeceased by her sister, LeeAnn Wilcox.
Calling hours were 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 30, 2006, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Ernest Clemmens officiating.
Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.
Memorial donations may be made to the Chenango Area Hospice.

Neilsen, Theta (Easter) 1922-1999 New Berlin NY Obituary

NEW BERLIN — Theta E. Neilsen, 77, of New Berlin died Saturday, July 17, 1999, in New Berlin.
She was born June 15, 1922, in Saffordville, Kan., the daughter of Noble and Alfa (Leith) Easter.
She married Sewell Neilsen on April 18, 1943. He survives.
She spent her childhood in Saffordville, Kan. She was a graduate of the local Saffordville, Kan. High School.
Theta is survived by her children, Daniel Neilsen of New Berlin, Nancy Woodward of Mesquite, Texas and Patricia Brockway of West Oneonta; five grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Interment will be in Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus.
There will be no calling hours.
Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.
