Douglas M. Bailey
BUTTERNUTS — Douglas Macumber Bailey, 74, of Butternuts, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 5, 2002, at his home.
He was born on Nov. 17, 1927, son of the late George and Pauline Macumber Bailey in Butternuts.
Doug was raised in the area and attended Gilbertsville Central School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945. Doug served during World War II and the Korean Conflict and was awarded the following medals: Victory, American Theater, Asiatic Pacific, Korean Service, United Nations, Chine Service, Navy Occupation Service and Good Conduct. In 1952, he was honorably discharged as Radar man 2nd Class.
Doug married Bernadette O'Hearon in 1952, and worked for General Electric in Utica and New Hartford for 16 years.
They moved their family to Westfield, Mass., and Doug was employed by the Westfield Chemical Co., until he retired in 1988.
Doug enjoyed being with family and was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, camp and garden.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Bailey of Butternuts; his children, James and Bonnie Bailey of Churchton, Md., Diane and John Capalario of Manchester, N.H., Robert and Myra Bailey of Canastota, Douglas and Jamie Bailey of Arlington, Texas, Karen and Bruce Duval of Westfield, Mass., and Sheila and Francis Beary Jr. of Lee, N.H.; brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Geraldine Bailey of South New Berlin; sister, Eleanor Merritt of Afton; uncle Donald and Ethel Macumber of South New Berlin; mother-in-law, Muriel O'Hearon of Sidney; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 8, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the service.
Memorial contributions may be made in Doug's name to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad or the American Heart Association.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel of Sidney.

Leech, Arthur G. 1927-2002 South New Berlin NY Obituary

Arthur G. Leech
SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Arthur G. Leech, 75, of South New Berlin passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 25, 2002, after an extended illness.
Born March 7, 1927, in the Town of Butternut, he was the son of Arthur and Georginez (Camp) Leech.
Arthur attended school in Mount Upton and Johnson City. Before completing his schooling, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 22, 1944. He received his five weeks' recruit training at Sampon, N.Y. He was a gunner's mate on the USS Nantahala and the USS Rehoboth, serving his country during World War II. He received the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal Six star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon-Single star and a Victory Medal. The entire crew he shipped with refused the Purple Heart. Arthur was honorably discharged from the Navy, separating from Lido Beach, Long Island, N.Y., on May 26, 1946. Arthur was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2782. Upon completing his stay in the military, Arthur held many jobs before he found his true passion. He worked for Gorton Construction and numerous other construction companies, where he developed and fine-tuned his carpentry skills. He went into the business of furniture making and refinishing. Arthur could take any old piece of wood and turn it into a work of art.
Arthur enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. A favorite pastime was going for rides in the country, where he would always have an eye open for a new fishing hole. He found a lot of pleasure in helping his sons operate their businesses, "The Barn," an antique and collectibles shop, and "Art's Auto Refinishing and Wise Guy's Towing."
Arthur is survived by his companion and friend, Shirley Haynes, of South New Berlin; his daughters, Barbara Gerken and her husband, Paul ,of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Diane Parker and her husband, Christopher, of Norwich; and his sons, James Sanborn (Leech) of Morristown, N.J., Arthur Leech of Norwich and Curtis Leech and his wife, Darlene, of Guilford. He is also survived by his sister, Juanita Nichols of South New Berlin; three brothers, James Leech of Garrattsville, Edward Leech of Mount Upton and William Leech of South New Berlin; 11 grandchildren, Rachel Molino, Jolene Sanborn, Edward Boyer, Jon Gerken, Geoffrey and Jennifer Parker, Derrick Balcom, and Melissa, Kyle, Katy and Kayla Leech; and three great-grandchildren, Kayla Molino and Tyler and Christopher Gerken. Arthur also leaves behind Linda Mills, whom he raised from the time she was a small child, as well as his beloved birds Wally and Jake; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Robert, Donald and Alan Leech, and his sisters, Alma Bresee and Marian Berube.
Graveside funeral services for Arthur will be held at the Butternut Valley Cemetery in Mount Upton, at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 1, with the Rev. Romeyn Kipp, pastor of the Holmesville Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial with full military rites will follow.
The family has requested no calling hours.

Rhatigan, Mildred J. 1927-2002 Gilbertsville NY Obituary

GILBERTSVILLE — Mildred J. Rhatigan, 75, of Gilbertsville, passed away Friday, June 21, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
She was born Jan. 23, 1927, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Joseph and Mildred (Spring) Prevost.
She was married to James A. Rhatigan on Aug. 13, 1944, in Brooklyn. Mr. Rhatigan died on Oct. 22, 1992.
She was a former employee of American Institute of Physics in Woodury.
She has resided in the Unadilla and Gilbertsville areas for the last 17 years, and she was a former resident of Bethpage.
Mrs. Rhatigan is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Thomas Oefelein of Guilford; three brothers, Alfred Prevost of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Richard Prevost of Glendale and William Prevost of Huntington; her grandchildren, James, Tom, Kathleen, Denise and Lynda; a great-granddaughter, Lauren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Dolores Johnson in 1988.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at our Lady of Grace Church in West Babylon.
Interment will be in St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.
There will be no calling hours.

NEW BERLIN — Rose B. Tiffany, 75 , of New Berlin passed away Saturday, March 16, 2002, in New Berlin.
She was born Jan. 18, 1927, in the town of Butternuts, the daughter of Orrin and Mildred (Tripp) Belden.
She married Donald Tiffany on May 17, 1945. He predeceased her July 2, 1990.
She spent her childhood in the Gilbertsville area.
She attended Gilbertsville High School and was very proud to receive her GED in 1970. She later attended BOCES and became a licensed practical nurse.
She was employed by Kraft Foods for 35 years, then worked as an LPN at the Oxford Veteran's Home and for the past five years as a counselor at Pathfinder Village.
She volunteered at the New Berlin Library, helped with election polls and was involved with a seniors group.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge and the Butternuts Grange. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in South New Berlin.
Traveling was Rose's greatest joy, whether by bus, car, plane or boat; her favorite trip being to Alaska.
She leaves behind many friends and family as she makes her final journey to be with her Lord.
She regrets that she will be unable to return to her work at Pathfinder Village and the people she loved there.
She wishes to thank all who have helped her at the Faxton Cancer Center, New Berlin Health Center and Hospice.
She is survived by her four children, April Tiffany of Utica, Bruce Tiffany of South New Berlin, Carl Tiffany of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ed Tiffany of Utica; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Belden of Rome.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in South New Berlin with the Rev. Kurt Funke of the First Baptist Church in South New Berlin officiating.
Interment will be in the Butternuts Cemetery in the town of Gilbertsville.
There will be no calling hours.
