Kenraid Shields
NEW LISBON — Kenraid (Ken) Shields, 86, died at Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on March 25, 2003, due to complications from lymphoma.
Ken was born on Mt. Utsayantha, near Stamford in Delaware County on March 16, 1917. He was the fifth son of Robert and E. Grace (Boggs) Shields. He was predeceased by brothers, Bernald, Fenton, George and Lyle.
When Ken was 2 years old, the family moved to Morris, settling in the Light Homestead, overlooking the village. He grew up and attended schools in Morris, graduating in 1934. He then attended the Crane School of Music at Potsdam Normal School, now the State University College at Potsdam, where he met Doris Pederson, who became his wife.
They resided in Morris until 1950, when they moved to New Lisbon and purchased the Clayton Lull farm, known to this day as Sugar Ridge Farm.
Ken was employed as a youth by Morris Manor Farms, Linn Manufacturing of Morris and was self-employed with friend Dick Campfield as Campfield & Shields, painters & decorators and Musson Brothers Tree Surgeons.
After serving in World War II, in the Pacific Theater as a radio operator and field artillery, Ken was employed by Scintilla Corporation. He then taught music at Laurens Central School until joining the New York State Division of Employment as a farm representative in the Oneonta and Norwich offices.
In 1966, Ken devoted himself fully to Sugar Ridge Farm, breeding and raising a fine herd of registered Jersey cattle. Ken remained actively involved in the farm until the time of his illness.
Ken's hobbies included hunting and other outdoor activities such as maple syrup production, forestry, firewood and carpentry. A fine baritone, Ken sang with numerous local choral groups, and as recently as last year, 2002, Ken sang at the funeral of a family friend. He was one of the original members of the Oneonta Chorale, now known as the Catskill Choral Society, and did solo work in several area churches.
He was highly skilled at all types of equipment maintenance and repair, which served him well in his primary avocation, Sugar Ridge Farm. Starting with two horses and six cows, Ken developed the farm into a registered Jersey dairy. The herd was the result of great emphasis placed on breeding and quality farming practices. The family showed their prize Jerseys regularly at the Otsego County Fair.
Ken joined the Morris United Methodist Church when he was 13 years old and was one of their oldest living members. He was a church trustee for many years, and periodically directed or sang in the church choir. He served as a trustee of the Village Library in Morris and was active with The American Jersey Cattle Association, The New York Farm Bureau, The Delaware Jersey Cattle Club and The Nature Conservancy. He served as a tax assessor for the town of New Lisbon for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris P. Shields; sons, Bruce of New Lisbon, David and wife, Diana, of Kodiak Island, Alaska, Eric of Morris, and Chris and wife, Barbara, of Treadwell; and daughter, Kristina of New Lisbon; six grandchildren, Meredith of White Plains, Erika of Atlanta, Ga., Sylvana of West Orange, N.J., Clark of Cambridge, Mass., Luvonne and Linn of Kodiak Island, Alaska; many nieces and nephews; dear friend Audrey Shields of Cherry Valley; brother-in-law Dr. Thoru Pederson of Worcester, Mass.; and sister-in-law Hilda Bigwood of Williamsville.
A memorial service will be held at the Morris United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2003, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Family will greet friends immediately following the service in the lower level of the church.
In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make contributions to the Memorial Fund at the Morris United Methodist Church or the Village Library of Morris, NY 13808.
Internment will be later in the spring. Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

NEW LISBON — Graveside committal services for Kenraid and Doris Shields will be held in Hillington Cemetery, Morris, on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 1 p.m.
Friends are invited back to the Shields' residence after the committal services.

Sloan, John B. 1919-2003 Gilbertsville NY Obituary

John B. Sloan
GILBERTSVILLE — John B. Sloan, 83, of Gilbertsville, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Kingston Hospital after a prolonged illness.
He was born Sept. 20, 1919, in the town of Butternuts, the son of Brice and Mamie (Haines) Sloan.
He lived most of his life in Gilbertsville, where he graduated from Gilbertsville Central School in 1937.
He married Beulah Birdsall in June of 1940. He worked at Scintilla of Sidney from 1940 until 1943, when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the European Theater of operations during World War II in the 102nd Infantry division as a machine gunner having fought in the "Battle of the Bulge," and was discharged in 1946.
Throughout the years he worked at various jobs including working at the Gilbertsville School as a custodian, where he also ran the projector for the Saturday night movies.
He moved to Florida in the mid 1950s and worked as a sheet metal mechanic for Radiation Company until he returned to Gilbertsville in 1962. He then worked for Scintilla, Bennett Ireland and retired from Simmonds Precision as a toolmaker in 1980.
He was fire chief of the Gilbertsville Fire Department during the early 1950s. He was also very active in the American Legion for over 50 years and served as Otsego County Commander in 1969.
He enjoyed throwing horseshoes and gardening.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beulah; his sister, Ada Sloan of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bernt Hansen of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Mary Sloan of Gilbertsville, a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Myra Sloan of Gilbertsville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A brother, Bill Sloan; a son, Jim Sloan; and a grandson, Eric Nesbitt predeceased him.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville and burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery with military honors.
Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Robert H. Todd
MORRIS — Robert H. (Toddy) Todd, 73, of Morris died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born March 7, 1930, Albion, the son of Frank and Laura Todd Stark.
He married Lura Edwards on March 5, 1950, in the Baptist Church in Gilbertsville.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1949 to 1950. He had been employed by Journal Publishing Co. of Gilbertsville, from 1954 to 1965. He then owned and operated "Todd's Garage" in Gilbertsville, and later worked for Delaware-Chenango BOCES of Norwich, and Medicoach of Oneonta.
He then served the village of Morris as village superintendent until his retirement. He later went on to be elected Mayor of the Village of Morris.
He was a member and officer in both the Gilbertsville and Morris Emergency Squads and fire departments and had been a volunteer fireman since 1951. He was a First Aid instructor and was very instrumental in the establishment of several local Emergency squads including Edmeston, Guilford, Mount Upton, Morris, Gilbertsville and others.
He was a member and had held several offices in both the Baptist Church of Gilbertsville and the United Methodist Church of Morris, and was very active in the Emmaus Community.
He had also served as an assistant at the Johnston Funeral Home for several years.
He was raised in the Butternuts Lodge No. 515 F&AM on Dec. 7. 1961. He first served as Master of the lodge in 1967, a position he held five times since then. He was District Deputy Grand Master from 1980 and 1981.
Toddy was currently a Fire Commissioner for the Morris Fire District. He was a faithful twice a day attendee of the Morris Coffee Shop O.F.C.
Toddy is survived by his wife of over 53 years, Lura of Morris; his children, Rita Richards and Gordon Richards of Oneonta, LuAnn Todd and Paul of Morris, Linda Todd of Oneonta; his brother, Vincent C. Stark and Elsie of Gilbertsville; his sisters, Dianne Cardwell and John of Parsippany, N.J., and Cynthia Young of Franklin. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Todd, Adam and Derek Richards, Jessica and Olivia Spicer; two uncles; two aunts; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and many dear and close friends; and his "garage boys." And his special friend, Calico.
Calling hours will be held at the United Methodist Church in Morris, on Saturday, April 26, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m., with the memorial service following at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating, and will include a Masonic service and a firemen's memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions in his memory to either the United Methodist Church Improvement Fund, 5 Church St., Morris, N.Y. 13808 or the Emmaus Scholarship Fund, care of Wyoming Annual Conference, P.O. Box 58, Endicott, N.Y. 13760-0058.

Turnbull, John R. 1936-2003 New Lisbon NY Obituary

John R. Turnbull
NEW LISBON — John R. Turnbull, 67, of New Lisbon, died unexpectedly Friday, March 21, 2003.
He was born Jan. 15, 1936, in Oneonta, the son of George and Vivian (Rockwell) Turnbull.
He was married to Ruth M. Rood on Dec. 16, 1967, at the Baptist Parsonage in Hartwick by the Rev. Schindler.
John attended Morris Central School where he was an avid sports player, graduating in 1954.
He was a born farmer, starting while still attending school at 15. He purchased his own farm within a few years of graduation, and lived there for his remaining life.
John was a member of the Dairylea Cooperative Inc. for 52 years, receiving a recognition award for 50 Years of Loyalty as a member in October 2001. In 1995, John was awarded a certificate of appreciation for 40 Years of Loyal Patronage from I.L. Richer Co. In 1989, he was given the Award of Excellence for Herd Achievement for the outstanding quality of milk produced in the Northeast in Chenango County. John also received in 2001, a Certificate of Recognition for 20 years of dedicated service to the town of New Lisbon.
John loved all aspects of farming. He was devoted to his family, and enjoyed spending time with them — especially his grandson, Timmy. He enjoyed visiting with friends, and when possible he was always ready to kick up his heals square dancing.
John and his brother, Howard, operated a sawmill together up on John's farm. Thirty years ago he sawed his own wood for the addition on his barn. Many items in the Turnbull home were built from hand-sawed boards from the mill. The previous owner of the mill that John and Howard operated had sawed the boards for the home that his daughter Sharon and her family now live in.
John is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 35 years. His children and their spouses, Sharon and Robert Simmons of Edmeston, and Vivian Turnbull and Corey Layman of Albany; his grandson, Timothy Simmons of Edmeston; three brothers and their spouses, Howard and Priscilla Turnbull of Edmeston, Bruce and Beverly Turnbull of Wilmington, Del., and James and Marie Turnbull of Harrisburg, Pa.; his sister and her husband, Isabel and Stephen Winters of Garrattsville; his mother-in-law, Florence Rood; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and their spouses, Gladys Eldred of Norwich, Lawrence and Rita Rood of Mount Vision, William Arthur Rood of Oneonta, Edward and Linda Rood of Hartwick, Patricia and Frederick DeForest of West Edmeston, Dorothy and Roy Roberts of Oneonta, Mykel and Deborah Rood of West Burlington, Mary and John Bush of Hartwick; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Robert Rood Jr.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Young officiating. Family will be receiving friends at the New Lisbon Town Hall after the service.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 24, 2003, at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Hillington Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad.
Funeral arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

On the Gain

My husband's surgery went well on Monday, the 9th and I brought him home Tuesday evening.  He is 87
and has many health issues so surgery and general anesthesia was a worry.  With the great surgical and anesthesia teams, then surgical nursing floor at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY,  he came through very well.  An exhausting 2 days, but so glad they are behind us.  He is happy to be home and progressing well.
Thank you for your patience and I hope your lives are going well. 

Van Vranken, Luella (Filer) 1918-2003 Gilbertsville NY Obituary

Luella VanVranken
OTEGO — Luella Van Vranken, 84, of Otego, died at home on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003. She was born in the town of Butternuts on Dec. 13, 1918, to Adelbert and Grace Utter Filer.
She graduated from Gilbertsville High School and later married Abram "Bill" Van Vranken on Dec. 16, 1939. Together they owned and operated Mel-O-Med Farm from 1943 to 1988.
Luella was active in the community as a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville, former member of Covered Bridge Squares square dance club, Butternut Valley Grange of Gilbertsville, Butternut Valley Garden Club, Otego Hookers rug club, and the New York Holstein Friesian Association.
Luella is survived by daughters Mary Lou and husband, Kenneth Hammond, of Otego and Janet Nelson of Otego; brother, Carl and wife, Esther Filer, of Union Springs, N.Y.; sisters Wanda and husband, Ken Beach, of Morganton, N.C., Mildred and husband, John Van Vranken, of Edmeston, N.Y., and Esther Chandler of Hawley, Pa.; sister-in-law Phyllis Filer of Norwich, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Kenneth Hammond III, Karla Hammond, Amy and husband Frank Rock, Janie Hammond, Daniel and wife Annette Hammond, Ezra Hammond, Eric and wife Patti Hammond, Nicky Halperin, Seth Bordley, Tamara Nelson and Heidi Fischer; and six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jarvis, Marc and Tony Lizarraga, Sarah Hammond, Andrew Strum and Meredith Hammond.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Van Vranken, on Jan. 25, 1989; brothers, Donald Filer and Louis Filer; and sister, Gladys Barber.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, with the family in attendance.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Randy Palada at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.
Memorial donations may be made to Gilbertsville Emergency Squad, First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville or Catskill Area Hospice of Oneonta.
Burial will be in the spring at Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

OTEGO — Graveside committal service for Luella G. Van Vranken of Otego, who died Feb. 7, 2003, will be on Friday, June 20, at 2 p.m. at Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Randy Palada, officiating.
Immediately following the service the family will have a reception to greet friends at Bill's Park in Gilbertsville.

EDMESTON — Borghild (Betty) Wust, 86, of Cooperstown, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
She had resided at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown for approximately one and a half years.
She was born on November 19, 1916 in Bergen, Norway, the daughter of Hans and Hanna Hovick.
She married Karl Johnson in 1935 who predeceased her in December of 1988.
She is survived by their children, Rev. Henry Johnson and wife, Janet, of Chambersburg, PA, Lennart Johnson and wife, Carol, of Burlington, Linnea Nelson and husband, Larry, of Hartwick; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Amy and Jay Lyon and family of Burlington, Alan and Keri Johnson and family of Burlington, Kristopher Johnson of Oneonta, Matthew Nelson of Mount Vision, Bryce Nelson of Hartwick, Karla Johnson, Kristine Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson.
She was also predeceased by a grandson, David Johnson, in 2001.
She married William Wust of Edmeston in 1989 who predeceased her in December of 2002.
Surviving are her stepchildren and their families, Charles and Nadine Wust, Sidney Wust, William Jr. and Susan Wust, John and Shelly Wust, and Richard and Michele Wust, all of Edmeston.
Borghild was a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church in West Burlington. She was active in Home Bureau and served as a 4-H leader.
She was well known for her culinary talents and owned and operated the Karlsborg Tourist Farm with her husband for many years.
She worked as a chef for Stephen Clark of Cooperstown for thirteen years and also worked at the Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.
She loved to read and enjoyed her many plants and flowers. She will be long remembered for her generosity, gentleness and caring way.
The family expresses its heartfelt thanks to her sister, Erna Richards, her brother and his wife, Henry and Nell Hovick, for all their love and support. Also to their family friend, Ingeborg Quitzau and to Peggy and the staff at Woodside Hall for their kindness and caring.
Calling hours will be held at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin on Thursday, February 20 from 4-7 PM.
Funeral services will be held at the Saint John's Lutheran Church, West Burlington, on Friday, February 21 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Lynn Ash and the Rev. William Rittberger officiating.
Funeral arrangements are with the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.
