| Denise A. "Deni" Hughes New Hartford Denise A. "Deni" Hughes, 74, of New Hartford, passed away at home on Sunday, March 4, 2012 from a long illness. She was born on October 21, 1937 in New Berlin, NY a daughter of the late Benjamin Bassett and Alta (Wagner) Morehouse. She attended Morris High School and graduated as a Practical Nurse. She then went on to work at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY before returning to school as a member of the nursing class of 1960 from Binghamton General Hospital. Denise continued her education in nursing obtaining her BSN from SUNY College of Technology and her MSN from Syracuse University. On September 2, 1961 she married Gordon Trevor Hughes in Morris, NY. Throughout her 40-year career, Deni held various nursing positions at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY; St. Elizabeth Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital, retiring as Day Nursing Supervisor. She became an Oncology Certified Nurse in 1984 and was a member of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). She was also hired as an Adjunct Clinical Nursing Instructor at Mohawk Valley Community College in February 1986 later becoming the MVCC Professional Nursing Tutor in 1996 until she retired from MVCC in 2010. While at MVCC Deni was the recipient of the MVCC Excellence in Adjunct Faculty Service Award in 2003. Denise was a member of the Seed and Weed Garden Club and, in her free time, was an avid gardener spending hundreds of hours in her own gardens. She also engaged in numerous forms of needlework including cross-stitch and crewel embroidery. Her other hobbies included an interest in thimbles and she was a member of the Thimble Collectors International – Empire State Thimble Collectors. She is survived by her daughter Karin Hughes and son-in-law Jonathan Covel. She leaves a special uncle-in-law, Arnold Shea of Utica, two brothers, Daniel Morehouse and his wife Linda of Garrattsville, NY and Grover Morehouse and his wife Maryann of Genoa, OH and a sister, Audrey Teed of Morris, NY. She also leaves many very special and dear friends. The family wishes to sincerely thank "The Girls" as well as the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties for the wonderful care complemented by true compassion that was given to Deni during the last weeks of her illness. They wish to thank Dr. Scott Brehaut of Middle Settlement Road and the nurses and staff at St Elizabeth Medical Center (3A) in Utica. They especially want to thank Chris and Paul Pry for their wonderful care and friendship. The family sincerely thanks all of Deni's wonderful friends and family who enriched her life. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 2 pm at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home 13 Oxford Rd; New Hartford, with the Rev Laurie Pauley officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Denise's memory be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413; the New Hartford Public Library, 2 Library Lane, New Hartford, NY 13413; or, in keeping with her love for nursing, a donation payable to MVCC Foundation Nursing Scholarships, 1101 Sherman Drive, Utica, NY. 13501 Arrangements are with the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home 13 Oxford Rd.
