Denise A. "Deni" Hughes New Hartford Denise A. "Deni" Hughes, 74, of New Hartford, passed away at home on Sunday, March 4, 2012 from a long illness. She was born on October 21, 1937 in New Berlin, NY a daughter of the late Benjamin Bassett and Alta (Wagner) Morehouse. She attended Morris High School and graduated as a Practical Nurse. She then went on to work at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY before returning to school as a member of the nursing class of 1960 from Binghamton General Hospital. Denise continued her education in nursing obtaining her BSN from SUNY College of Technology and her MSN from Syracuse University. On September 2, 1961 she married Gordon Trevor Hughes in Morris, NY. Throughout her 40-year career, Deni held various nursing positions at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY; St. Elizabeth Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital, retiring as Day Nursing Supervisor. She became an Oncology Certified Nurse in 1984 and was a member of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). She was also hired as an Adjunct Clinical Nursing Instructor at Mohawk Valley Community College in February 1986 later becoming the MVCC Professional Nursing Tutor in 1996 until she retired from MVCC in 2010. While at MVCC Deni was the recipient of the MVCC Excellence in Adjunct Faculty Service Award in 2003. Denise was a member of the Seed and Weed Garden Club and, in her free time, was an avid gardener spending hundreds of hours in her own gardens. She also engaged in numerous forms of needlework including cross-stitch and crewel embroidery. Her other hobbies included an interest in thimbles and she was a member of the Thimble Collectors International – Empire State Thimble Collectors. She is survived by her daughter Karin Hughes and son-in-law Jonathan Covel. She leaves a special uncle-in-law, Arnold Shea of Utica, two brothers, Daniel Morehouse and his wife Linda of Garrattsville, NY and Grover Morehouse and his wife Maryann of Genoa, OH and a sister, Audrey Teed of Morris, NY. She also leaves many very special and dear friends. The family wishes to sincerely thank "The Girls" as well as the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties for the wonderful care complemented by true compassion that was given to Deni during the last weeks of her illness. They wish to thank Dr. Scott Brehaut of Middle Settlement Road and the nurses and staff at St Elizabeth Medical Center (3A) in Utica. They especially want to thank Chris and Paul Pry for their wonderful care and friendship. The family sincerely thanks all of Deni's wonderful friends and family who enriched her life. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 2 pm at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home 13 Oxford Rd; New Hartford, with the Rev Laurie Pauley officiating. Hughes, 74, of New Hartford, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on Monday, November 29, 2010, 6 months after being diagnosed with melanoma. He was born on July 10, 1936 in Cooperstown, NY a son of the late Trevor and Mary (Harris) Hughes. He attended Cooperstown High School and was a member of the Class of 1956 from the NY Forest Ranger School in Wanakena. He continued his studies in Forestry at the University of Montana in Missoula during the winter months while fire-fighting in the Territory of Alaska in the good old Grumman Goose during the summers. Later in life, he graduated from MVCC and SUNY Utica Rome with a degree in Banking, Insurance and Real Estate. On September 2, 1961 he married Denise Morehouse in Morris, NY. Throughout his working career, Gordon held various positions at Marine Midland Bank and Blue Cross Insurance. He was the Fiscal Administrator at Little Falls Hospital for the majority of his working career. After his retirement he continued to work at Little Falls Hospital as a consultant. An admirer of old American Glass, he discovered glass toothpick holders and joined the National Toothpick Holder Collector's Society. He remained active in NY Forest Ranger School Alumni Association where he served as treasurer for several years, and was an active participant of the Cooperstown High School Alumni Association. Gordon enjoyed searching for the perfect old, glass toothpick holder and loved traveling to many glass shows all over the country where he could visit with his many friends who shared a similar passion. He also enjoyed visiting the many art galleries of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a place where he loved to vacation. He loved spending time outdoors and was an avid gardener, who also enjoyed hiking - spending many happy weeks in this countries National Parks. He also was a true animal lover; and especially loved his feline companions. He is survived by his wife Denise of New Hartford, his daughter Karin Hughes and her husband Jonathan Covel of San Diego, CA. He leaves an uncle, Arnold Shea of Utica, two brothers, Robert Hughes and his wife Laura of NJ; and David Hughes and his wife Diane of Binghamton, NY. He also leaves many very special and dear friends all over the country whose lives he touched and by whom he was touched. The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of Hospice and Palliative care of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties for the wonderful care complemented by true compassion that was given to Gordon during the last week of his illness. Desai and Lawrence of the Regional Cancer Center at Faxton Hospital and especially the oncology nurses of the outpatient infusion and radiation oncology clinics. He lived that life until the very end, never missing coffee with his friends at Panera, Casab's or around the country at a convention or auction.
